Calling all smokers who roll their own...............

and before anyone starts, I don't want a debate on the wrongs of smoking, I already know them.

Anyhow, back to the subject.

Since the revelation that DH has the odd cigarette I've also discovered (well he discovered actually as he'd not tried before) that he's pretty good at rolling his own cigarettes. We've decided, since it's a lot cheaper, that he'll roll mine for me too (when I try they come out looking like "gone wrong Cigars that have been cut open on one side" ).

Anyway, at the moment we've just bought a pack of "Golden Leaf" tobacco from the local shop, some slim filters and a pack of green Rizlas.

Now what I want to know is -

What are the differences between all the different papers you can buy to roll your own? (when I bought the green pack there were loads and I bought the green as the lovely shop assistant said that was what most people use).

Are there lots of different types of tips???

What tobacco do you buy - Golden Leaf is ok (and cheap) , but I wouldn't mind spending a little more on some decent stuff given that it works out so much cheaper than buying cigarettes.

Do any of you buy online - and if so from where???

I roll backwards too and everyone rips the piss out of me!

merrymum · 16/11/2007 13:55

so much easier though!

puppydavies · 16/11/2007 13:56

lol @this thread must stop reading though there's a packet of cutters choice (not mine) in the corner luring me towards it the more i read.

golden virginia is soggy and horrible, drum is like sawdust and horrible and only bought from a friend of a friend in a pub in the middle of nowhere .

me: cutters choice, green rizla (only difference between green and red is cut corners, blue are thinner and harder to roll), no filters [hardface]

numptysmummy · 16/11/2007 13:56

Is isn't it? Nobody else i know can do it! Freaks

merrymum · 16/11/2007 13:58

ok just had a go at it the other way-still cant do it!!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 13:59

well I've been to the market and I'm afraid I'm not going to be "cool" as I've bought a roller - just tried it out and it's fab - bought some menthol tips too......just about to go and smoke it and see what it's like.

But DIVVY.........when you said there would be lots of chavs at the stall I thought "no more than normal for town"........how wrong was I....no-one at the stall when I got there.......HEAVING within seconds

OP posts:
merrymum · 16/11/2007 14:01

yeah but those things roll them too tight go on be cool like me and numpty try our way!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:09

no - it's just fine - there's one thing for sure, now I've got my menthol tips........I'm going to save a FORTUNE now I'm not going to be spending £5 on a box of 20

OP posts:
puppydavies · 16/11/2007 14:12

now you need to get yourself a fancy cigarette case, something enamelled, with the spring loaded clip inside, so you can keep a small stash of ready rolleds about your person

puppydavies · 16/11/2007 14:13

but don't try rolling too far in advance - after 24 hours or so they go all dry and horrible.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:15

yes I was thinking that yesterday when I was warned about not making them ready rolled because of the risk of ripping my gullet out.....have to have a look around at the end of the month when I have some more cash

And I just have to say - I'm really pleased that this didn't turn into a smokers bashing thread as often happens here on MN.

I think all of us on here that smoke know that it's not good...but the fact is we "do" smoke and sometimes blondes like me need some advice on helping to reduce their expenditure on smoking in a way that they'll still enjoy there 5 minutes peace out in the garden

OP posts:
puppydavies · 16/11/2007 14:23

do you know i often think about taking it up again just to get that 5 minutes peace [wistfulface]

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:24

why not make a coffee and go out and drink it in the garden instead - that way you'll still get your 5 minutes peace - but won't start smoking again.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/11/2007 14:24

Queenie, did 'rip yer gullet out' offend?
I NEEDED you to understand, for your own safety, that it really does quite hurt if you smoke a dry one.... 'Hurts you throat a bit' doesn't cut it, neither does 'Canes a bit'.

Also, where do you get these nice enamelled tins you speak of?

Since I usually roll tulips rather than regular shaped rollies, (tulips are easier to roll!) the ones I have seen emblazoned with aliens smoking J's will only raise more eyebrows....
LOL

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:27

No didn't offend at all - it was highly enlightening - and helpful.......DH had only pre-rolled some 1hr before you posted - so I was able to rush down and put them in an air tight container......and then when DH came home I warned him about pre-rolling too

As for nice enameled tins.........don't know yet LOL

in our local department store there used to be a sub-department of the booze bit that sold smoking paraphenalia - lighters, fancy ciggie boxes, cocktail cigarettes - anyone remember those? black ones or multicolour pastel ones, we used to treat ourselves at xmas . i think we still have a baccy shop too, they'd prolly do them. basically anywhere that sells zippos and the like worth a try.

pooka · 16/11/2007 14:38

Well this thread has made me decide to give up...

the ready made fags.

I am OK at rolling, but have got out of the habit. I also reckon that will end up smoking less because of the faff involved. And and and save money.

Thanks QoQ

The colour of the papers means different things with different brands. With Rizla, red are the thickest, then green, then blue (or silver I think). King size red I found easiest for rolling joints. But bloody obvious when you buy them!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:44

pooka - I've already saved money this week - probably only about £5 so far as I've bought the tobacco, filters, roller ) etc - but I can already see that it's going to save me loads in the long run.....I thought the pack of filters I bought at the market only had approx 50 in.......but now I've looked more closely it's approx 150 LOL...and I nearly went for the "3 packs for £2" offer as well .

I've also smoked fewer than usual, yesterday it was because DH rolled the "minimum" I thought I'd use before he got home (and I actually had 3 left when he got in ) and today.....well because even with the rolling machine it still takes time...and it's making me think do I want a cigarette now, or am I just doing it because I'm bored or because it's "routine" for me to have one then.

puppydavies · 16/11/2007 14:45

rollies do stain your fingers more tho

TheQueenOfQuotes · 16/11/2007 14:46

here you go cigarette cases

OP posts:
puppydavies · 16/11/2007 14:47

and i enjoy the "faff" almost as much as the smoke, it's all part of the ritual.

enjoyed [wistfulface]

ninedragons · 16/11/2007 15:28

I think this thread is the bicycle shed of MN.

When we all go our separate ways onto other threads we'll still have to nod to each other when we pass and leave people wondering "how do you know her when she's not in our year?"

Dinosaur · 16/11/2007 15:32

I wonder if I could still roll one if I tried?

I used to go round to one of my mate's houses during schooltime and smoke rollies with his unemployed older brother (with whom I was obsessed for years) and drink tea and listen to Scott Walker and Japan. Aaaahhh, happy days...

harleyd · 16/11/2007 15:36

i wish i could roll them

mine are disastrous

LadyOfTheFlowers · 16/11/2007 15:39

i enjoy the faff too!
very satisfying when you make a perfect smoke!

i can safely say, i have never got stained. In my teens smoking malboros or now smoking rollies.
