Calling all smokers who roll their own...............

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:06

and before anyone starts, I don't want a debate on the wrongs of smoking, I already know them.

Anyhow, back to the subject.

Since the revelation that DH has the odd cigarette I've also discovered (well he discovered actually as he'd not tried before) that he's pretty good at rolling his own cigarettes. We've decided, since it's a lot cheaper, that he'll roll mine for me too (when I try they come out looking like "gone wrong Cigars that have been cut open on one side" ).

Anyway, at the moment we've just bought a pack of "Golden Leaf" tobacco from the local shop, some slim filters and a pack of green Rizlas.

Now what I want to know is -

What are the differences between all the different papers you can buy to roll your own? (when I bought the green pack there were loads and I bought the green as the lovely shop assistant said that was what most people use).

Are there lots of different types of tips???

What tobacco do you buy - Golden Leaf is ok (and cheap) , but I wouldn't mind spending a little more on some decent stuff given that it works out so much cheaper than buying cigarettes.

Do any of you buy online - and if so from where???

Ex partner smoked roll-your-owns, some info gleaned from him,

He always used Swan filters (green) as he said the glue was better than rizlas. I think the colours denote the thickness of the paper, red are thinner and more difficult to roll. The orange ones are liquorice flavoured (vile and disgusting!!!)

He used Golden Virginia, as Old Holborn and Drum were horrible (and stank, imo)

He used Swan extra thin filter tips because they were easier to roll with.

Hope this helps!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 15/11/2007 13:14

ugh

pirategirl · 15/11/2007 13:16

i get my moum to send my golden virginia over from spain.

£3 a pack of 50g, a staggering £10.50 here, its really a piss take.

One pack lasts me a month!!!

I use green rizlas, all i know is that blue are thinner.

Iklboo · 15/11/2007 13:17

Don;t smoke but my parents hand roll - you can buy wee machines that make the things easier to roll

Wisteria · 15/11/2007 13:18

Golden Virginia is the only one for me, don't care which rizlas tbh but they have differing thicknesses and are for the purists out there who feel as little paper as possible gives a purer smoke. I prefer swans 'extra slim' filters personally.

Practise makes perfect....put less tobacco in and roll it between thumb and forefinger until it feels like a solid tube (not too tight though), roll it up, lick the adhesive lightly and seal, going from tip to end.

Failing that buy a rolling machine

Desiderata · 15/11/2007 13:21

I love Amber Leaf. It's equally cheap, but I far prefer it to Golden Virginia ... and Amber Leaf comes with a pack of 50 papers in with the price. Rizla papers are good, (green), but the Amber Leaf papers are even better.

Always use filters; they make the fag easier to roll.

Once you've got used to them, you'll never want to go back to a machine-made fag ever again.

Wisteria · 15/11/2007 13:23

Aw Desi - this makes me think of our first ever contact.............

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:23

you can buy rolling machines - REALLY??

OMG how much would my DH love that......not having to make sure he's rolled enough to last me until he gets home at gone 9pm...or risk finding me climbing the walls when he gets in (I'm sure practice does make perfect......but I've tried on and off for nearly 10yrs and am still hopeless LOL).

Pirate - how many do you usually smoke a day?? (just wondering how long I can expect my 23g pack to last me...)

Divvy · 15/11/2007 13:24

Our own market sells it, very cheap and you can have different "flavour" mixed too.

Menthol is very nice, also menthol filter tips.

I love a light shag!

Wisteria · 15/11/2007 13:25

here

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:25

Desi - I usually smoke menthols - but am quite happy with my roll-ups - especially given they're a lot cheaper than buying packs of cigarettes - LOL

OP posts:
Divvy · 15/11/2007 13:26

...also to add I dont smoke now, incase you were wondering, but this is what I had when I did.

ps..they are normally set-up outside the library

Wisteria · 15/11/2007 13:27

I can't stand menthol tips but swan make them too (white packet, not yellow)

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:28

Divvy.........you don't smoke do you?????

Didn't realise the market sold it! Is it that one near the library on the side bit of Woolies? (Near the sweet one?)

oooo - thanks for the link Wisteria - I see they're out of stock - but it's good to know you can buy them........I don't mind an "outlay" of £1.50ish to get one

OP posts:
Divvy · 15/11/2007 13:28

Bugger..I fancy a menthol fag now!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:28

Those rolling machines are great - only cost about 4 quid I think. Can buy them in a local newsagents usually.

mcnoodle · 15/11/2007 13:29

Golden virgina/red papers/swan superslim filters

Have smoked roll-ups for years - ready mades taste utterly utterly foul

Used to work with a woman who had incredibly long (and horrid) fingernails. She had a rolling machine - she was ever so proud of it.

Wisteria · 15/11/2007 13:30

I was giving link as example - just chuck it into google and you'll find loads!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 15/11/2007 13:32

I personally find, rolling machines make the smokes too thin, like sucking a golf ball thru a hose. There are 'prison rollies' and there are 'on a tight budget rollies'!
Think I over spin the machine - 'tis fun! LOL
Golden Virginia for me, DH likes Cutter Choice. i will gladly smke his tho, I don't notice a difference.
Green rizzies are standard weight, blue ones are thinner. Whicever you prefer really, no difference IMO.
Extra Slim Swans all the way.
Once you do a few, you will be able to roll perfectly by hand. It is easy once you perfect a technique.
DONT make the in preparation unless you can store them in a small airtight container.
They will dry out and rip yer gullet out!
ALWAYS keep yer pouch closed!

Dixichik · 15/11/2007 13:32

Papers are different thicknesses, the red papers are thinner than the greens. The greens are popular as they are the most popular for smoking cannabis et al (apparently). The tips come in different sizes, you get slimline swan filter tips and fat ones. I used to smoke golden virginia. When I lived in the west country they used to sell flavoured tobacco (cherry, lemon etc). They had all these different flavoured tobacco's in sweet jars on the shelves in the newsagents....yuk.

Divvy · 15/11/2007 13:32

They sell rolling machines, everything you would need..they will be there on Friday

TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:33

Thanks everyone - was a bit scared to start the thread as I half imagine it would turn into a smokers bashing thread......but at the same time I was sure that there would be at least a handful of MN'ers who not only smoke, but smoke roll-ups and would be able to help me out.

OP posts:
TheQueenOfQuotes · 15/11/2007 13:35

oooo - thanks Divvy - may pop into town tomorrow and see what I can do.........

QoQ rushes off to put her ready made roll-ups in an air-tight container before they dry out and rip her gullet out***

ibroughtcake · 15/11/2007 13:35

Oh god, this thread has reminded me how much I loved to smoke, flipping children
