Mrs S the reversing round corners thing will click i promise you. i hated it for ages but am ok at it now (blardy should be after all those lessons ). even though i usually do about twice as many steering manoeuvres (sp??) as actually required because am too impatient to let the steering i've just done take effect IYSWIM. but it doesn't really matter as long as you make it in the end.if you find yourself swinging too close into the kerb steer right to get away. if you're sticking out too far into the road steer left. i always get told off for staring into the mirror too much but can't seem to help it!

MrsSlowLearner · 31/05/2007 13:23

Cat-Its sounds easy when you say it,maybe my instructor is complicating it? i dunno,i hope you are right anyway

By the way a question i have been meaning to ask all you fellow learners is;
Does your instructor often refer to 'dry steering'? ,i am thinking that this would be frowned upon in a test?
Oh and ,When you apply the handbrake do you get told to push the button in as you pull up to avoid cranking the lever?

OP posts:
CatIsSleepy · 31/05/2007 13:31

Mrs S it seems complicated to begin with but gets much easier.
parking on the other hand......
oh, and yes to button thing (though my dh never uses it in our car-he was quite surprised when i told him about it. think he likes the noise it makes
dry-steering: think you're not supposed to do it alot but i do it occasionally to straighten the wheel out

MrsSlowLearner · 31/05/2007 13:34

oh thanks Cat

JoolsToo · 31/05/2007 13:38

can I just say, as a driver, that I hope the 'terrified' bit of your threadline is a joke?

Otherwise, I'm worried

MrsSlowLearner · 31/05/2007 13:46

No jools it isn't a joke!
If you see a lot of learners tootling by with a look of horror etched on their faces with hair stood on end and you smell a slight hint of crap then you will know it is one of us

Had a lesson this morning which went well.
Still need loads of practice with the reversing but i am trying to remind myself that it will come with time.
Next lesson is friday.

Totaleclipse-How did you get on?

OP posts:
totaleclipse · 05/06/2007 21:52

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyy, I passed

I only got one question wrong

Boco · 05/06/2007 21:57

oh what is dry steering? Is it anything like dry humping?

I had a 2 hour lesson today - I drove on a dual carriageway for the first time - and over took lorries at 80mph! It was very scary and i hated it, but not as much as i hated stalling in the middle of the road on a double roundabout.

I really really find this hard. I hate being rubbish at something, but there's no way round this one, i really really am rubbish.

luczluutoo · 05/06/2007 21:57

Congrats Total........next step practical huh?

luczluutoo · 05/06/2007 21:59

think dry steering is when you are turning the wheel without the car moving. My instructor bangs on about it ,telling me it doesn't do the power steering any good..OOOoops

totaleclipse · 05/06/2007 22:04

Hmmmmm, yes, need another 6 or so hours first, but I do 2 hours a week, so hopefully by the time the school holidays start I will be a driver

Boco, 80mph does your instructor let you go over the speed limit?

I overtook a police car the first time I went on a dual carriage way, he was only doing 50mph and all the other cars were too scared to overtake

totaleclipse · 05/06/2007 22:05

Yes dry steering is turning the wheel while the car is not moving.

MrsSlowLearner · 05/06/2007 22:08

Well done Totaleclipse

Somebody kick me up the arse to knuckle down and get the theory passed.

Boco -I have lessons when i feel like that too

OP posts:
totaleclipse · 05/06/2007 22:14

Boco, when I first started learning my driver told me, you might think for a few weeks that you are'nt impoving, but suddenly you go up a level, then you stay at that level for a few more weeks, then you go up another level, and its true, a few times now I have got in the car, started my lesson and everything seems so much easier, then a few weeks laer it happens again, stick to it, we can all get there

luczluutoo · 05/06/2007 22:16

A favourite for me is going straight from 3rd gear to 5th,makes me look a total tosspot...or not being able to find 5th gear at 45miles per hr.....major PANIC ATTACKS...arghhhhhh.Lesson tmrw.

Boco · 05/06/2007 22:22

I had to go that fast to clear the lorries. I think going fast is easier than going slow in traffic - hope i do go up a level soon, seem to have been at this level forever.

wrinklytum · 05/06/2007 22:25
