Can I join too, please?

I had a few lessons about 10 years ago but stopped as I split from my then DP and couldn't afford to carry on, let alone run my own car! DH took me out a few times when we first got together but that's all.

I am now 4 lessons into my latest attempt to learn, my brain seems to have retained some of the knowledge from last time, but I have stalled in a few embarrassing places, and have a habit of panicking if something goes wrong. I am determined to learn this time, though!

purpleduck · 26/02/2008 22:48

Thanks Dillinger

Snowhite · 27/02/2008 10:18

Well took my 3rd test on 5th feb and Passed ! its such a great feeling when they tell you that you have passed.

dillinger · 27/02/2008 12:10

I was hoping to go out for a drive in a bit to meet dp, but to be honest Im so nervous Im not sure I can. Maybe I should just do more driving with dp first. Feel a bit of a failure though

Beauregard · 27/02/2008 12:50

dillinger-Dont feel a failure ,you have passed the test but you need to build your confidence etc.
I only passed in december and i still avoid certain areas and my god parking i seriously need some practice. Why they dont teach you bay parking i will never know?It does bother me that i am still nervous but then that is just me and why it took until i was 32 to learn.I am far less nervous now than i was in december so i know it does get easier.

Beauregard · 27/02/2008 12:50

congratulations to you snowhite

purpleduck · 27/02/2008 14:19

I went out today. It was a bit crap.

How many hours have you guys had per week?

The BSM lady recommended 4 hours a week Thats 100 quid!! Shitcakes thats alot!!! Is this normal!!!????

Beauregard · 28/02/2008 09:57

Of course the BSM lady recommended 4 hours purpleduck she will be quids in then.
I had 2 hours per week over 2 days for 9 months.

dillinger · 28/02/2008 15:22

4 hours a week? Christ. I started last august and had one hour a week until about dec/jan when I then had a 2 hour lesson each week until my test.

I mean if you can afford it etc then do what suits you but I think thats a bit much tbh.

Anyone do that Pass Plus? Im not sure its for me - Ive been driving our car on and off for years now and so as a named driver anyway I dont think we'd even get much discount on the insurance. I know you get to learn motorway driving etc but I think I could build my confidence up with that by doing short motorway trips to start with, e.g Bath to Bristol and build up from there.

dillinger · 28/02/2008 15:24

And I managed to go for that drive yesterday - was well blardy weird and pretty busy due to temp traffic lights and roadworks but gave me good clutch control practise lol

Thank god the fiesta's a diesel, practically impossible to stall lol

purpleduck · 28/02/2008 21:21

Well done Dillinger for going out. I think I am going to change instructors. She took me to a narrow road with loads of parked cars on the side. and i drove for maybe 5 minutes in 2 hours. I felt just a bit fleeced when I got home!!
Def can't afford 4 hours a week, and I think driving skills are like cheese or wine - they need to mature

btw, I used to drive in Canada, but there were only ever about 6 others cars on the road at any given time in the town i am from. And i always drove an automatic.
They are soo much easier. sigh.

dillinger · 29/02/2008 09:04

Maybe an independent instructor would be better? I had a few with BSM a few years ago (were an xmas present - I was NOT happy lol) and I just felt like another in a long line of learners, iyswim - it just didnt feel right, wasnt personal etc Then obv I gave up again for a few years... this time round I had my lessons with a lovely woman who understood my nerves and even changed her times to start at 8am on sats instead of 9am so that a)it didnt matter if my dp had to work that day as he could start a bit later and therefor have our son while I had my lesson, and b)I wouldnt be worrying about my lesson all day - just get up and go!

Its definately worth finding that instructor that you just 'click' with, as you'll be spending a fair bit of time with them, and you cant learn if youre not comfortable. We phoned around until we were happy.

I think an hour a week is fine esp to begin with, my instructor said you dont want to 'peak' too soon anyway and you dont want to get driving overload and get farked off with the whole thing

time4tea · 30/03/2008 09:11

ismisemama · 01/04/2008 21:29

Hi everyone, just found this thread, it's great!
Well done everyone who has passed.

I've been trying to learn for a few years on and off, I'm really peeing myself off now.I have a couple of lessons then stop, then get up the courage to try again, then stop.
It's like a huge thing hanging over me now and everyone keeps saying I should be doing it, how great it will be when I can drive ,but I HATE my lessons.

I HATE driving, will I ever feel any different?

CrackerOfNuts · 06/04/2008 12:02

I need to join this again.

Right, after my first and only lesson back sometime last year, I now need to books some more lessons and just get on with it.

I am really fortunate this time in that I have all of the money for my lessons, and the money for a cheap run around for when I pass, so what is stopping me ? I am terrified of being so rubbish that it takes me years and years to learn.

I need be driving

I am ont sure how to book my lessons. Do I book a huge block and then have several lessons a week, or just one or two ??

tiredemma · 06/04/2008 16:42

I can recommend my instructor Emma- she is fantastic.

Im having 1.5 hour lessons every week- could do with more really but its too expensive.

CrackerOfNuts · 06/04/2008 16:43

Does she cover Sutton emma ?? I would prefer a female instructor tbh.

CrackerOfNuts · 06/04/2008 16:44

Email me her details if you don't want to post them on here.

I really want to be driving by xmas if at all possible

tiredemma · 06/04/2008 16:46

Ill ask her on tuesday when i have my next lesson. She is lovely- I feel really confident with her.-

She lives by asda queslett so will check if she would cover suuton.- if not ill ask which female instructors she would recommend- she used to work for bsm and knows everyone!! ( all the other instructors wave to us as we drive past)!

tiredemma · 06/04/2008 16:47

ill email you her number then.

I started in october- still nowhere near test ready

CrackerOfNuts · 06/04/2008 16:49

Cheers

Tbh I think I will be crap for at least the first 6mths LOL.

My dad is on the look out all the time for a car for me and I don't want to be in the position of having a car and not being able to drive it, cos that will just piss me right off LOL.

ItsNotYouItsMe · 11/04/2008 17:57

Hello, can I join in?

I've just booked 10 hours of lessons, I'm so excited but scared at the same time

DP is learning too, well he can drive, but failed his test a couple of years ago and left it at that.

Like Cracker says I will be really pissed off if we get a car that I can't drive for ages so I want to learn quick-ish...

pinkyminky · 16/04/2008 16:47

Can I join? I'm 37, 12 weeks pregnant with my third and I need to learn to drive if I am to have any type of a life. Please give me some words of encouragement!
