Can I join this thread too please.

Actually you may not want me to as I am a bit of a cheat and am learning in an automatic car . I have had about 15 lessons with a fab independant instructor but have realised that I detest driving. I especially hate roundabouts and never seem to be able to go at the right time. I do need to be able to drive though as I start uni in Sept and can't get there without a car.

Is anyone else going automatic? Does anyone else hate roundabouts like me and is anyone else working to a timescale?

Hi Vacantlypretty. Love the name btw!! I had lessons years ago in a gear car and was ok but I also had a horrible shouty instructor who really knocked my confidence. I think its because of the timescale really and what I can cope with atm. My instructor now is a real gem - he is an older man of 60 who must have the patience of a saint. When (or if) I pass he will be getting a huge bottle of whisky as a thank you!

What car are you learning in? I am in a Nissan Micra and if feels like a bloody tank! What is it about roundabouts that you hate? Also do you get other drivers being complete arses around you just because you are a learner. I have had some awful truck drivers driving too close and white van drivers are pretty bad too

I can only afford a 1 hour lesson a week atm but we drive constantly during this time so my hour is used in the best way possible. We do some pretty busy roundabouts which I hate as I am too hesitant. I don't pull out when I should and then sometimes pull out when I shouldn't. I did it on a busy roundabout on Thursday and had to mouth sorry at another driver. Luckily he was lovely and smiled and mouthed back it was ok, so not al drivers are bad with learners!

Are you learning with a chain or an independant company? Why do you hate your corsa VP?

I know what you mean VP. I have lost count of the amount of people who have told me I will be severely limiting myself by going automatic. The way I see it is I have waited 13 years to drive and a few more months won't make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things! I think I will be more confident in an automatic and a fair few of the mums I know at Ds's school learnt in manuals but have driven automatics now for years and would never go back. I guess it depends on the individual. Do the gears phase you more or is it something else?

I am with a one man band! He charges £20 a lesson which is cheap for automatic and I really could not ask for a better instructor. He is fantastic - really patient, never shouts and never tries to rip you off like some do. I know one lady who had 10 lessons and never drove on a main road - her instructor took her on an industrial estate and spent way too much time showing her diagrams to save his petrol .

How many lessons have you had now VP?

Is this thread still going ??

I finally plucked up the courage to book some lessons, and first one is next a week tommorow.

My instructor sounds lovely, and like she will put me at ease thank god.
