I saw a woman in the Science Museum today, who really could only be described as having "let herself go"

Grey streaky "hanging" hair, huge arse and fat tum in grey tracky bottoms, footglove shoes, shapeless burgundy tunic top and hanging tits. She really looked like she had given up on life. In contrast, she had three dear little, divinely trendily dressed girls with her. She had obviously put a lot of thought and effort into what they were going to wear (down to the very funky hat one of them was wearing) but hadn't even spent five minutes on herself.

Why?

Mrs S - FWIW I sometimes look at women through society's eyes (and mine) and say - oh god what's happened there? But mostly because I'm also thinking : 'There but for the grace of god go I'.
I think it's such a looks based culture that we're all under pressure to be anxious about our appearances so inevitably that involves looking around and seeing the state of everyone else doesn't it? It must mean a lot of us are looking at appearances - given all those '10 years' younger programmes which are such a weird mix of the negative presented as positive!
But there is no question that people with very high self-esteem often take care of their appearance don't they?
I sometimes am a little shocked by the appearances of others but that includes men as well.
I am also shocked by my own appearance in the mirror because in my own mind I'm a 20 year old skinny fox but in the mirror I inexplicably appear to be a chubby lass who should stop wearing jeans, t shirts and sweatshirts all the time! Trinny and Sus would be merciless in the 360 degree mirror!

Judy1234 · 18/04/2007 12:55

ip, but may be what's at fault are values which say the looks matter so much. I think it helps me that I don't watch TV so I've never seen a makeover programme.

ipanemagirl · 18/04/2007 13:01

absolutely xenia - in an ideal world we wouldn't. But my dh works in the media and is surrounded by foxy young chicks, I worked in the media and still do sometimes so inevitably I have to keep in touch with it a little bit.
And I think a lot of women realise that their looks influence their career success significantly.
There are men and women in more merit based work or work that has rights which are protected. But for a lot of women life is, to some extent a beauty pageant. Personally I hate it but what can you do in protest?
I mean look at how young girls are marketed at from a very young age to wear make up, jewellry, strappy tops, tottering heels. I don't have a daughter but our society screams 'looks matter' to us all - all the time.

themoon66 · 18/04/2007 13:03

Just to go back to the OP.... that is the second time today I've seen mention of 'footglove' shoes on MN.

Will someone please tell me what they are?

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 13:05

There is a link to them further down the thread..............somewhere!

Ah Xenia........spoilsport!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 18/04/2007 13:09

themoon - footglove shoes are comfortable but fugly

melsy · 18/04/2007 13:20

Im feeling what yuor saying Xenia in a way but also though , those childrens prada/boden clothes could be 2nd hand. Which could also be looked at in two ways; 1) why buy wear ANY labels if you dont want to live by the codes of supposedly wrong doing designers perpetuating this image only life 2) buying 2nd hand whatever it is, is recycling and very much encouraged .

Again a judgment is made whatever way you do things, even though a persons good unoticed deed is done!!!!

See its difficult isnt it , not to live within the image culture we have as a race created for oursleves. As I have a business (currently shelved) , were I have to look a certain way so that my clients believe in what I do. I dont think I would gain their respect if I didnt dress smart/stylish. Sp were does that leave us ???

MascaraOHara · 18/04/2007 13:27

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 13:36

Tut tut Mascara, you missed all the important stuff about shoes

Would make mhamai's day if xenia cracked a joke.......hint hint

lucyellensmum · 18/04/2007 13:39

in response to the OP bimey, not even five minutes on herself, heavens someone call social services, those poor children having to be seen out with such a mess! Perhaps this site should be renamed bitchnet. Maybe she hasnt given up on life but perhaps she thinks having well presented, and by this i mean clean (can't be doing with designer kids - they grow to quickly) with good shoes etc, than spending ages tarting herself up. Three children are hard work, heavens i might have been naked if i had to get three children ready for a trip to the science museum. I wasnt going to repsond to this because its just the sort of snidey shite i hate. Of course i realise that these sort of comments are usually made by insecure women who are simply trying to make themselves feel better. We all need someone to look down on i guess. I've never been one to stand there in the mirror applying the slap, well maybe when i was 15 but i can be forgiven that for being a child of the 80's.

There are more important things in life than how you look, aren't there?

kimi · 18/04/2007 13:47

Sometimes I look like I could give L-low a run for her money and some days I look like a sack of shit.
Depends on what I am dong/have been doing where I am going/been or if I have been up all nght with a sick child...
Although I have NEVER NEVER NEVER gone out without my bra.

kimi · 18/04/2007 13:48

J-LOW even

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 13:52

I was beginning to wonder who L low was!

lucyellensmum · 18/04/2007 14:02

my DP likes me to go out sans brassiere, but perhaps thats because ive got great tits!

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 14:04

Showoff!

kimi · 18/04/2007 14:08

I have great tits but I would like them to stay nearer my neck then my navel. Bra it is...

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 14:13

I have great tits.............when I'm lying in the bath!

donnie · 18/04/2007 14:19

btw what are crocs and why are there so many threads about them at the mo?

Oblomov · 18/04/2007 14:20

I agree with lucy... shall we rename the site bitchnet ?
FGS ladies, leave the bloody woman alone.
Unlike the Italians, I rush off to Sainsburys with no bra ( mind you I do have fab norks), no hairwash, looking a state.

When I really make an effort, no one recognises me. Even at the staff party, people passed me by, later admitting they didn't know it was me.

Should I be concerned. It don't give a fart

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 14:20

They are fast becoming part of MN culture, as in fruit shoots, sausage rolls, moon cups et all.

wildwoman · 18/04/2007 14:21

Ok I haven't been here for long but have been dying to ask, what are mooncups?

Mhamai · 18/04/2007 14:23

I think you will find the woman was left well alone ages ago, but hey it's rather a long thread, it's become one of those mention anything threads, in fact if I'm not wrong, I think it's mostly been about shoes

lucyellensmum · 18/04/2007 14:24

i admit it, i was sucked in and bought a pair of crocs, can console myself that it was a comfort by, although i have a heart and ladybird jibbitz (hubby bought them what am i to do) but i draw the line and mooncups! and fruit shoots, aren't the the devil incarnate?

wildwoman · 18/04/2007 14:24

what are mooncups?
