In light of the tragic events that happened here this week I feel so helpless and so I thought if I could just bring the subject up and get you all to check then at least I feel I would have done something!

checked mine and its working! did post on the other thread but my thoughts are still going out to you all!

DANCESwithaTruckLoadOfMiniEggs · 24/03/2007 07:08

mine are on the mains (part of fire regs when we had loft conversion done) I really like that they are on the mains, very reassuring, I'm going to look into fire angels too though. It's one of my greatest fears (dh and I have a 'fire plan') for if it happened during the night.

staceym11 · 24/03/2007 07:11

oh and mum brought us a Kiddie escape ladder thing when we moved into our flat as there is only one exit, very useful thing to have. Its under dds bed so whereever a fire may be they wont have to go through it to get out!!

You can buy fire angels from the supermarkets too, I bought mine from Tescos so simple you jut pop it on top your lightbulb like a lamp. It takes about 6 hours or so to do the first charge then only requires 30 mins a week to keep fully charged, it takes about 60 days to totally de-charge. I paid about £20 for each of mine, money well spent

powder28 · 24/03/2007 11:08

I was just thinknig earlier that i should turn the fire alarms back on in my house. They were going off randomly so i turned them off. I think i will just put them on at night.

Hillary · 24/03/2007 11:10

Hi powder (waving)

Sounds like you need to get someone to have a look at them, sould be on 24/7 really you dont want them to not go off if you need them

powder28 · 24/03/2007 11:14

I know, and you always think 'oh that wont happen to me'

Hillary · 24/03/2007 11:17

Yep I always went on that persumption but you know what it can, and it has to me (not fire but other things) so I don't take chances anymore (have a look at my profile with my dd at birth, thats a Group B Strep infection, someting people dont think will happen to them either).

powder28 · 24/03/2007 11:22

Ive got a carbon monoxide detector, one you just stick on the fridge, but the fire alarm is just metnal. ONce it started going off and I really didnt know how to turn it off. My dh was at work, it didnt seem to be boterhing the kids. I had to ring him at work, after nearly having a nervous brkdown about it!!!

Ours is on the mains. It works - it went off earlier this week when I burnt a pan dry.

Need to rememeber to get a carbon monoxide alarm too.

Have thought about those ladders. We have a three storey house, with kitchen on the second floor - door opposite the stairs which is our exit route.

I think you can get free smoke alarms from the fire service.

They also come out and asses your home too free of charge (hey nice firemen in your house gotta be worth an appointment)

BeckleSpeckledEgg · 24/03/2007 13:31

mine works

how sad for your community and that poor woman

powder28 · 24/03/2007 13:33

Yes, ours is on the mains. I just flicked the switch in the fuse box to turn it off. Ours seems to go off if the house gets too hot!
