Apologies for the following massive essay...
What makes me sad about the sexist comments is that sexism is so ubiquitous and "normal" in the world, they didnt actually understand why what they said was wrong.
(Well, chris evans later issued a sweet apology that sounded genuinely regretful, but jr's was one of those sulky "fuck you" non-apologies reminiscent of a teenager being forced by a teacher to apologise for doing something dickish at school.)
It doesnt surprise me though, because casual sexism is rife and accepted all over the media. I was channel-surfing for 10 minutes last night and heard about half a dozen more offensive things than what they said - for instance, jimmy carr making a cake that said "I love boobies", and ross noble laughing at women who wear spanx underwear to hold their bits into a more socially acceptable shape.
There would be an outcry if all this daily bullshit was directed at a minority ethnic group. (Not to say that racism is not also rife and horrendous.)
However...they had been giving press interviews for 8 hours straight and were clearly exhausted, they had probably stopped being able to think straight. But still.
I really like jr as an actor because unlike nearly all today's Hollywood male leads, he's totally believable as a shady / psycho / morally ambiguous working-class hard nut. This is probably because, unlike them, he partially is one.
And for some fucked up reason, the part of me that the feminist part of me hates finds this very attractive.
