1.Send letter reg move or to cancel service to...

Gas
electric
water
phone
council tac
phone
broad band/dial up
sky
t.v licence
banks(for each account send a separate and signed notice of change)
credit/store cards/catalogues
loan companies
ermm.sure ther'll be more..

2.ring round for quotes on removal firms - these vary greatly IME, best to look round and dont just go with cheapest as your furniture may not get their in one piece!(i used Sandersons- teesside last year and will prob use this time too)..also check when they need paying (best paying when work is done not upfront!)do they charge for travelling time, how many hours minimum and insurance for your valuables

  1. gut your present house!
we have a box of stuff which has remained unopened since our first house 8 years ago!..yes i really need it, but best to chuck all rubbish now so you dont get charged extra to move it, then chuck it anyway! plus, you might be able to make some cash selling stuff on ebay/car boots thru paper etcSmile

4.try to arrange for children to be looked after, its difficult for us and not nice for them being shoved here and there while furniture being moved around.

erm...someone else help me out, i know theres loads more and im gunna need it in next few weeks!

Add child benefit office/tax credit and ?child trust fund account? to the list of people to tell....?

Jessajam · 24/04/2006 12:58

oh, and possibly Drs and dentists depending on where you are moving to...

EvesMama · 24/04/2006 13:05

  1. get yr post redirected (this takes a while)
  2. sort out childcare/schools - let them know you're moving, make sure you have new places
  3. throw a leaving "do" - even if it's takeaway & wine amid the boxes, really lovely to say goodbye to everyone
EvesMama · 24/04/2006 14:06

I have packed precisely 2 boxes. Smile and have now run out of boxes. Waiting to hear from solictor about exchange date this week - hopefully. Then the panic will set in! Shock

EvesMama · 24/04/2006 14:35

have you done all ur letters and gone most stuff packed?..removals sorted?..if yes..sit down, feet up and chill out for an hour!

AllBuggiedOut · 24/04/2006 14:35

Print out some change-of-address cards for friends and family.

Personally I wouldn't bother with post office redirection - as long as you tell all the important people you're moving it's probably only the junk mail you'll miss out on. Leave some printed labels for the new owners saying "please redirect to ..." so they can easily forward things to you. The post office charge one for each surname you know, so if you and partner have different names you have to pay twice!

Ask the removals people for quotes for packing too - I've just had an over-the-phone estimate of between £160 and £240 to pack our very full 2 bed flat which seems like an absolute bargain as it would take us FOREVER I'm sure!

cece · 24/04/2006 14:39

our quote for packing was £195 plus VAT - but we have a lot of stuff in our 3 bed house and large shed!

spacecadet · 24/04/2006 17:07

have just about done everything evesmama Smile
am so stressed though!

EvesMama · 24/04/2006 19:06

well yeah i can imagine(and only too recently remember too!)..is everything arranged then?are the kids getting looked after?
im a bit worried about dd when we move as shes starting new nursery tmorrow for 2 1/2 hour morning sessions and well be dead stressed dropping her off, getting back for prob an hour before picking her up again, then back that way to house with removals..i hate having her bustled aroundSad

OP posts:
spacecadet · 24/04/2006 20:51

evesmama-no im doing it all on my own, and with 4 kids!

cece · 24/04/2006 21:33

OMG!!

We only moved last Oct so a lot of it is still boxed up in the shed! Even so I still have filled th boot of the car with stuff for the charity shop today. Shock

EvesMama · 25/04/2006 11:37

oh your worse than me, we moved here last july!
no wonder your stressed doing it all yourself!,,try and get kids into group or with a friend or family for few hours on day just to give you head room!

OP posts:
cece · 25/04/2006 12:41

Agree about getting the kids out of your hair for the day if you can!

Does that mean you are not getting a removals co to move your stuff???

I may have to do the day on my opwn as DH is on jury service starting next week but I will have removal men to do the lifting! I just have to tell them what to do. So should be in my element Wink Thinking of getting a clipboard, just so I can look like I know what is going on!

EvesMama · 26/04/2006 08:29

Grin at you in your specs n clip board , tight bun and prodding stick to 'move them along'GrinWink

OP posts:
spacecadet · 26/04/2006 08:33

evesmama-my h who im currently seperated from is coming down on saturday and taking my 2 boys to my mums until the moves complete so that will be a big help.

EvesMama · 26/04/2006 08:37

oh good that will be of some help!..no wonder your stressed!..i make all arrangement proir to move, booking removals all the selling and buying stuff..pack most of boxes myself and lable them and make a list of them..then on the day...hand the LOT over to dpGrin...you must be a stronger person than i am to do 'everything'!..do you have removal firm too?

OP posts:
seriouslystressedspacecadet · 26/04/2006 09:09
