1.Send letter reg move or to cancel service to...

Gas
electric
water
phone
council tac
phone
broad band/dial up
sky
t.v licence
banks(for each account send a separate and signed notice of change)
credit/store cards/catalogues
loan companies
ermm.sure ther'll be more..

2.ring round for quotes on removal firms - these vary greatly IME, best to look round and dont just go with cheapest as your furniture may not get their in one piece!(i used Sandersons- teesside last year and will prob use this time too)..also check when they need paying (best paying when work is done not upfront!)do they charge for travelling time, how many hours minimum and insurance for your valuables

  1. gut your present house!
we have a box of stuff which has remained unopened since our first house 8 years ago!..yes i really need it, but best to chuck all rubbish now so you dont get charged extra to move it, then chuck it anyway! plus, you might be able to make some cash selling stuff on ebay/car boots thru paper etcSmile

4.try to arrange for children to be looked after, its difficult for us and not nice for them being shoved here and there while furniture being moved around.

erm...someone else help me out, i know theres loads more and im gunna need it in next few weeks!

I haven't read the thread but my tips are:

Get packers
Get packers
Get packers

Absolutely sort out all old boxes of junk before you move - according to our removers everyone says they will but doesn't. It's bliss being in a new house knowing there is no clutter.

BellaLasagne · 29/04/2006 14:16

As an expert (12 moves with HM forces!), don't forget contents insurance. Make sure your stuff is covered for the move as quite a few insurers don't unless you tell them. Removers' insurance is usually inadequate and limited to a certain amount per square metre.

Also don't forget house and car insurance will go up/down depending on the change of risk areas/size of house etc. Make sure you're covered.

Apologies for not reading all your post, but if your removals company will pack for you, it reduces stress levels by 500%!! Also, get them to take back boxes before they leave if poss as they never come back for them, even if they say they will. Store leftover boxes in the dry if poss (garage?) as they're impossible to move, get into car to take to a dump if they're wet.

Take your bedding, kettle, mugs, tea etc and any other essentials in your car, as they always seem to end up on the back of the van. OR mark boxes with bedding yourself (they'll forget!) 'ON LAST FIRST OFF', so you can make your beds up first, so you have somewhere to collapse on day 1.

Try to get someone else to look after children/pets for as long as possible as it takes about 3 days to fully unpack without them, 3 years with them!

Take enough cash with you for a couple of days, plus whatever you want ot tip Pickfords if they do a good job (they were brill with us)

Order a grocery shop online to arrive on the morning of day2 at the new house, or whenever you know your fridge will have cooled. Have a takeway on day1. All to reduce stress...!

Hope this helps and good luck. Be kind to yourself - it's flipping hard work, but I hope it's worth it!

BellaLasagne · 29/04/2006 14:18

P.S. Where about in Wales are you coming to (I'm Monmouthshire) and where are you moving from?

cece · 29/04/2006 17:47

EvesMama · 30/04/2006 19:26

We are using a local company called Goddards. This is the third time they have moved us. Have always found them efficient, hard working and reasonably priced.
