1.Send letter reg move or to cancel service to...

Gas
electric
water
phone
council tac
phone
broad band/dial up
sky
t.v licence
banks(for each account send a separate and signed notice of change)
credit/store cards/catalogues
loan companies
ermm.sure ther'll be more..

2.ring round for quotes on removal firms - these vary greatly IME, best to look round and dont just go with cheapest as your furniture may not get their in one piece!(i used Sandersons- teesside last year and will prob use this time too)..also check when they need paying (best paying when work is done not upfront!)do they charge for travelling time, how many hours minimum and insurance for your valuables

  1. gut your present house!
we have a box of stuff which has remained unopened since our first house 8 years ago!..yes i really need it, but best to chuck all rubbish now so you dont get charged extra to move it, then chuck it anyway! plus, you might be able to make some cash selling stuff on ebay/car boots thru paper etcSmile

4.try to arrange for children to be looked after, its difficult for us and not nice for them being shoved here and there while furniture being moved around.

erm...someone else help me out, i know theres loads more and im gunna need it in next few weeks!

still no survey here..but IFA got one and read it to me stating mortgage people require a report from a roofer regarding the few tiles missing/lose and sign that we are going to action the prob within 6 months!..spoke to vendor and she's said she'll get her roofer(has used hiim when weather probs hit roof a while back) to have a look and repair or replace anything that needs doing straight away!!.fantastic!..just hope it is the couple of roof tiles and nothing major!...and now..we cant move on 2nd as planned as thier vendor will be out of country..so its going to be(hopefully!) tuesday?! 6th June!!..tuesday?..who moves on a tuesday??.arrgh..the panic's set in good and proper!

Sorry, can I join the thread too? I am moving hopefully at the end of june and as it's not that far we are going to hire a van and save money. However, I am dreading packing. Does anyone know if you can get packing minus removal?! Strange question I know Smile

themoon66 · 16/05/2006 10:33

I'm sort of packing. I say 'sort of' coz we haven't got a moving date yet. It should have bene this week, but solicitors are dragging their feet. We are now thinking middle of June as we are away on holiday during half term and half the week after.

How much notice do removal people need? I've had a couple of quotes and they seem to vary wildly.

Plummymummy - Argos sell a packing set for you do it yourself. Its 23 boxes, plus other bits like a marker pen, brown sealing tape, bubble wrap etc.

lucykate · 16/05/2006 10:38

can i join too?, we are moving to another part of the country, lancs to rutland in june.

chain has been a nightmare but hopefully its all sorted now. 4 houses in it, all surveyed, all got offers of mortgages, everything with solicitors and waiting to exchange.

removals costs for us are in region of £1500 due to the distance involved it will be a 2 day move.

just got a quote this morning from a cleaning service, £250ish to do new house from top to bottom. will be the best money we spend tbh, if the house is left as it was when we viewed the place, it'll be a mess.

themoon66 · 16/05/2006 10:45

I feel really lucky. We have done a part exchange with the builder, so no chain to worry about. We also don't have to worry about people coming to look round or have to deal with estate agents. I wouldn't have moved if we couldn't have done it this way. Last time was nightmare that traumatised me so much its taken 20 years for me to pluck up the courage to move again!

The builder has been lovely and has even given me a set of keys so I can come and go, measure up for curtains, even though we haven't even exchanged yet.

Its just his solicitors are being a pain over our current house. They keep asking if we had planning permission for the roof (didnt need it so no paperwork), the conservatory (got it, they have paperwork but lost it), the calor gas tank (they have paperwork but lost that too). Am sick of answering the same questions over and over and sending them copies of planning permissions over and over, just for them to lose. Grrrr.

plummymummy · 16/05/2006 14:19

Seems that some people are overly officious doesn't it. Sorry to hear about the hold up themoon66. Thanks for the info re Argos and packing kit. I will look into this but what I really want is for someone else to pack. I don't mind hard work (cleaning, lifting etc) but can't bear the thought of packing!

EvesMama · 17/05/2006 14:15

just ring removal firm and they should give you a quote for packing service, i dont suppose theyd turn it down if theyre free...also boxes are much cheaper from pcking companies..i got 18 in three different sizes and packing tape for £22..i got sizes i wanted and was much cheaper than argos or staples etc..bubble wrap is reasonable too.

YIPPEE I am back on line - BT have taken a week to fix the fault on the line. This morning they said it would be next Monday before they could fix it - after a lively reply from me an engineer was on my doorstep within the hour Smile

Move was fine, house is lovely if a bit grubby..... DH has already apinted DS bedroom but it now shows how grubby the carpets is sooo...

Hope everyone is feeling calm and relaxed!!

SparklyGothKat · 17/05/2006 16:06

I am still here, haven;t had a moving date yet. Need more boxes tho. Argos is out of stock, and I need some big boxes... :(

cece · 17/05/2006 16:08

Try McDonalds - their french fries ones are a good size... and they are free...

SparklyGothKat · 17/05/2006 16:10

lol! will try them then

themoon66 · 17/05/2006 23:12

Do you just go to the counter and ask for french fry boxes then? I don't know if I've got the cheek to do that without buying something and I don't eat mcdonalds.

EvesMama · 18/05/2006 09:41

i got some good sized ones from a firm near me called colton packaging and the largest(for all my winter clothes shoes and bedding(all in one) where about £2 each!

Cadmum · 18/05/2006 14:24

SGC; I sure wish I lived closer as we have many boxes from our last move that we will have to take to the recycling depot because the moving company insist on using their own...

SparklyGothKat · 18/05/2006 14:25

Cadmum · 18/05/2006 14:42

spacecadet · 18/05/2006 14:46
