1.Send letter reg move or to cancel service to...

Gas
electric
water
phone
council tac
phone
broad band/dial up
sky
t.v licence
banks(for each account send a separate and signed notice of change)
credit/store cards/catalogues
loan companies
ermm.sure ther'll be more..

2.ring round for quotes on removal firms - these vary greatly IME, best to look round and dont just go with cheapest as your furniture may not get their in one piece!(i used Sandersons- teesside last year and will prob use this time too)..also check when they need paying (best paying when work is done not upfront!)do they charge for travelling time, how many hours minimum and insurance for your valuables

  1. gut your present house!
we have a box of stuff which has remained unopened since our first house 8 years ago!..yes i really need it, but best to chuck all rubbish now so you dont get charged extra to move it, then chuck it anyway! plus, you might be able to make some cash selling stuff on ebay/car boots thru paper etcSmile

4.try to arrange for children to be looked after, its difficult for us and not nice for them being shoved here and there while furniture being moved around.

erm...someone else help me out, i know theres loads more and im gunna need it in next few weeks!

DD isn't going to school on move day. Granny and Grandad are going to take them to the park for a large part of the morning...... While the lorry is loading anyway..... She doesn't start her new school till next Monday.

cece · 08/05/2006 19:41

Yes, it is quite different to the school she is in now.... but she seemed to like it when we looked around. I am having hell of a job getting uniform in the colours though. Must be the wrong time of year!

Nbg · 08/05/2006 19:44

Just out of interest, how long has it taken for your searches to be done?

We can't get a date until these are back and our buyers and ourselves are at the same stage. Just waiting around now.

cece · 08/05/2006 20:07

Think it depends on the local authority.

Think ours took a week or two but tbh not sure...

they were chosen by the vendors because they were in rented and they are BTL but seem to be dragging their feet - GDG is in the same chain and its been an ongoing nightmare!

OMG you sound like you are at th esame stage as me an dI am moving tomorrow

themoon66 · 10/05/2006 09:22

Can I join this thread?? I'm in limbo with my move at the moment. We were led to believe by the solicitors that all the paperwork would be completed in 4 weeks and we had next week pencilled in as moving week. When I ring solicitors they just palm me off with excuses - well that's what it feels like. Now I reckon its gonna be middle of june coz we have a holiday booked over half term week. Its all really really getting to me and I cannot get motivated to pack anything coz I'm sure I'll need it and have to unpack everything again.

Do any of you know how much notice you need to give the people who come read the meters, put in the phone, etc??

EvesMama · 10/05/2006 12:24

take a meter reading yourself just before you leave and hand keys over...i ring utilities as soon as i have moving date to give them time to change details etc..make sure you keep meter reading tho cos your sure to get huge bill as they always cock up!

i sincerely hope you are not sat reading this CeCe!!!!!...get off your bum and get moved!WinkGrin

still no survey for us in todays postSad..but it is a week today, so maybe im being impatient..what Moi!!!!

drove past house to be nosey when took dd to school this morn and their packing tooGrin..AND..theres a house 12 doors down thats for sale at £27K more than what we paid!!!!
it is slightly bigger with more modern kitchen and bathroom..but not £27k nicer!!Shock

themoon66 · 10/05/2006 13:13

Thanx for that advice about reading the electricy meter myself. I will definitely do that. I really want to get moved because the house I'm buying is actually empty and ready for me, and the builder has let me have the keys to come and go to measure for curtains etc. Its sooo tempting to put things in there, but as we havent even exchanged yet, I dare not risk it in case the place gets broken into.

EvesMama · 10/05/2006 14:49

i can imagine how temping it must be!Smile..whats the delay?..give your solicitor hell and tell them youre paying mortgage/rent on a house you shouldnt be as yours is readyAngry..and if its your buyers solicitors..get your to give them an ear bashing!Grin

just had 3 qoutes to move us....
are you ready...£375.00!!!!, £253.22!!!! and £200!!...we only paid £140 last year with same company who want to charge us £253 this year???!!! WTF!!!

OP posts:
themoon66 · 11/05/2006 09:03

Its my buyer's solicitor that is holding things up by asking me one stupid question after another. Like yesterday... I got home to find a letter asking my for the paperwork to show I had planning permission for my calor gas tank. Tank was put in about 20 years ago and I already told them the paperwork was lost in the sands of time. The other day they sent a letter saying 'we notice the house has been re-roofed recently. As this often requires planning permission, we would like to see the paperwork.' Well durr.. there is none coz we didnt need it!

As for removal quotes - ive been told £51 per hour and a 3 bed semi is 7 hours minimum charge, even if they get finished in 4 or 5. Another bloke came round and quoted £375, plus extra for the boxes (hanging wardrobe boxes etc). To think we moved in here 20 years without help and with a borrowed transit van!

EvesMama · 11/05/2006 13:10

bloody solicitor..is it a small firm?? cos smaller ones always seem to drag their heels i remember from one time we used oneAngry

well we have another two quotes today, one said £200-£250 plus vat but would have to compile quote before confirm?..then ropy firm we used in first move said £260 ish and couldnt work out why i was unhappy they did a calculated quote last time and said 5 hours, then took 3!!and still charged me full priceAngry

soooo..first firm, who i shouted atBlush..have agreed to reduce price based on 5hour move(dont know how long they were gunna work?..but most moves take 3-4 max IME)..so £211..still shocking i think but sometimes we've just got to bend over and take it havent weShockGrin

OP posts:
themoon66 · 11/05/2006 13:29

I wouldn't dare shout at removal men.... I'd worry they'd deliberately do something nasty to my belongings!

I'm not sure about my buyer's solicitor being a small firm or not. I don't recognise their headed paper as being a local firm or anything, so don't know much about them. DH said they are probably writing all these letters to us so they can charge our buyer £50 for each one.

cece · 12/05/2006 15:42

Hi,
Just on my work computer as we are not connected at new house! BT says there is a fault on the line and can't get it sorted till at least Tuesday!!!! GRRRRRRR

Move went fine although seemed to take hours.... Your quotes all sound cheap to me. Ours was over £500... But we did have 4 men from 9.30 till nearly 5pm Shock

House is spacious but quite grubby.... definitely needs a lick of paint.... DH annoyed that shower head sprays sideways... oh ummm! A few niggles but on the whole settling in. Got massive shopping to do this weekend. New fridge, freezer, lawn mower, desk etc, etc....

Will be on line next week I hope! Hope all going well for you all Smile
