OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

Was that picked up on the blood test they do at ?6 days old, PPH? What did you have to do to repalce the hormone - is there a liquid version? Presumably he has to have regular blood tests, poor little chap. 'They' were concerned about dd1 at birth as I had been diagnosed with low thyroid by then, saying I couldn't b/feed her and other rubbish. But she was fine.

I have to say, I wasn't aware until about 2mins ago, when I looked it up, what tw*t meant!!!!!!! I always thought it was a version of 'twit'. Now I know why my kids always say I'm clueless.

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 21:29

It can get picked up on the guthrie (which looks for that and phenylketonuria) but actually his was picked up earlier because he was extraordinarily jaundiced, it didn't respond well to phototherapy, and so they looked for an underlying cause. This is my ds1 by the way, who is now 3, not my recent ds2. He munches his tablets quite happily every morning (used to have to crush them in water and squirt into his mouth with a syringe when he was a baby), and has blood tests and checks every 4 months or more often if his dosage needs changing. Very manageable - about the nicest thing that could be wrong, IYKWIM. And he is doing very well! Thanks for asking.
Does make me shudder to think what happened to these children pre-thyroxine though. I mean the difference between completely normal development and cretinism, all for the sake of a very small, cheap, simple tablet a day. Amazing.

popsycal · 04/12/2003 21:32

pps - sorry but am having a panic - ds was extraordinarily jaundiced and didnt resopnd very well to phototherpay for ages.....cause never found out.....he is fine now...but itis always lurking in my mind
is your ds ok?

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 21:35

he is fine! Your ds is about 18months now, isn't he? I'm sure they would have checked out your ds's thyroid, or if they didn't he would show major symptoms by now (overweight, listless, slow development re walking, speech, height etc)....
relax!

popsycal · 04/12/2003 21:41

overweigth but none of the other stuff...
i am sure thatthey did check - they check absolutely everything! just mrs paranoia
glad your ds is fine!!

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 21:46

also popsycal, he would have had his guthrie and presumeably that came back fine. If you are at all worried that he has a bit of a lazy thyroid (as opposed to my son who hasn't got one at all!) you could take him for a blood test but only if you are worried about him at the moment, not from when he was born IYKWIM

Interesting is it not that the word idiot is defined thus

A person affected with idiocy; especially : a feebleminded person having a mental age not exceeding three years and requiring complete custodial care

How many of us use that word on a daily or weekly basis?

How far do we go with this pc stuff?

Hope I didn't offend you with use of cretin pph or anyone else.

popsycal · 04/12/2003 21:59

thanks pph - not worried at all...just sometimes get paranoi by 'cause unknown' on ds's notes....
sorry!

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 22:03

I don't get offended, sometimes I don't notice and sometimes I do and get a shiver down my spine...

so what's a moron then?! something to do with meeting an IQ threshold as well I think!

Tinker · 04/12/2003 22:27

An idiot has a mental age of below 3, an imbecile has a mental age of 3 to 7 whilst a moron has a mental age of 7 to 12.

zebra · 05/12/2003 06:15

Thanks Tinker, I'm sure (.....???) the subtleties of these definitions will come in handy next time I get into an argument with an, er, "imbecile" in the pub.

Cam · 05/12/2003 20:29

pph, my dd's best friend at school has exact same thing, whereby her thyroid problem was picked up at a few days old and she has to have the same treatment as your child. She is now nearly 7 and is extremely bright and lovely girl.

Davros · 05/12/2003 22:27

Just been away for a couple of days and have been using my Mulberry Luella, PPH will know what this is!! It is a work of art - huge, gorgeous design and fantastic leather (as testified by friend in shoe business). Cost ....... you guessed it, £700. BTW, Louis Vuitton do lovely leather bags etc as well as that rip off printed coated canvas crap e.g. my lovely grafitti bag

jasper · 06/12/2003 00:32

Tinker, do Lidl do handbags?

JJ · 08/12/2003 20:14

PPH, my cousin was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 6 or so. She had it well before then, but my aunt was all hippy dippy trippy and didn't believe in regular doctor visits. All is fine now and my aunt changed her mind rather quickly after finding out! Anyway, for us it's Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. It's a genetic thing. I take medicine every day, too. I'm with you-- easiest chronic thing to control. If you have any questions (although I know you're daughter is younger than my cousin was), let me know and I'll send them on to her (she's 25? now).

Handbags: I'm middle of the road. I've a couple that are >100GBP, but I don't have that many bags. My main bag is a backpack/shoulder bag (it can switch).

JJ · 08/12/2003 20:28

OMG, I misspellt "your". I might have misspellt "misspellt", too, but I don't want to know right now.

princesspeahead · 08/12/2003 20:39

one "l", JJ, one "l".
I've heard of Hashimotos, but don't know much about it. Does that mean that you have some thyroid function but it declines with age? Ds has no thyroid at all. But it is always nice to hear about others who have thyroid problems from childhood and are fine - thanks JJ and Cam.
Davros - lovely!

MABS · 17/02/2004 21:32

I mainly buy the ones from next

expatinscotland · 19/08/2005 14:08

£90 isn't too much at all! NO way. Last time my folks were across, I got my dad to buy me a £100 small Prada bag.

I love handbags. You can never have too many.

happymerryberries · 19/08/2005 14:09

About £20 from M and S. Dh would think I had gone bonkers if I spent £100 on one!
