OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

Now have to admit that the reason I didn't buy a bag today was cos the only one I liked cost £495! Very annoying as was tempted by it but after being such a dogmatic twit on this thread felt I would have to kill myself if I did.

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 19:47

BTW PPH is Jarvis there yet?

aloha · 03/12/2003 20:44

PPH, you do make me laugh (in a good way). Reading your posts is like reading Tara Palmer Tomkinson's old column in Sunday Times Style (not written by her but by v clever journalist friend of mine). You are Mumsnet's very own It Girl.
Today I had an orange velvet Anya Hindmarch bag with purple ribbon detail that I got in the sale for about £40 - I think. Huge bargain. I also use a beige bag that was free with Eve and wish I'd got the free dotty handbag that Marie Claire gave away as I think it is v nice. I used to have a huge Donna Karan leather bag that was a gift - must have cost a fortune. And bought a Coccinelle bag in Rome on my honeymoon for about £150 (I think) but I hardly ever use it. It looks a bit like a Todd's tote. I also have a selection of evening bags with beads and sequins I hardly ever use and a beautiful black silk satin embroidered evening bag that I use quite a lot. I'm not good on sensible handbags. I used to have a Prada leather purse (also a gift) but it eventually self-destructed and my purse is now from Primark and cost £2. Sad, really.
I have a friend who is also mad about handbags and has a collection of Lulu Guiness, Chanel, Gucci, Prada etc - must have cost her many thousands of pounds. YIkes. I still like her though

princesspeahead · 03/12/2003 21:09

jarvis came, jarvis saw, jarvis was conquered. I kicked him in the nuts with my it-girl Jimmy Choos and he scarpered down the drive!

It might amuse Aloha to know that I was at school with TPT - wouldn't normally admit that but Soupy Coddy and M2T know as I sent them a copy of a very amusing email I was sent asking me (and everyone else in the school) to do a reunion tv programme with her.... um, don't think so thanks!

wasn't denigrating a bargain - far from it - more the competitive aspect of having the cheapest bag possible. reminded me of that derek and clive sketch - "you lived in a cardboard box on a motorway? You were lucky..."! Coddy wins with her tesco bag. Unless someone uses one from Lidl?!

oliveoil · 03/12/2003 21:25

I am with pph - I would spend lots on bags if I could afford it, not 'designer' splashed Louis Mutton () but gorgeous soft yummy leather ones ahhhhhhhhh.

The most I have spent was hundred and fifty pounds from Pied a Terre 4 years ago and that was in the sale. Before I cleared the decks when we sold our house a couple of years ago, I probably had around 30, all diff prices and styles. Was like fairy godmother handing them out to friends.

Am now on budget so bought one from Debenhams for twenty eight a couple of weeks ago

florenceuk · 03/12/2003 22:40

Debenhams used to have nice Orla Kiely "diffusion" bags in interesting colours, I thought of getting one for my mum for Xmas, inspired by this thread. But I went in tonight and couldn't see anything nice at all - other than a rather glittery red J Conran bag. Anybody seen these or have they vanished completely? I want something with pretty colours, a bit different - any ideas?

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 22:43

PPH lol @ Derek & Clive!

Poor jarvis

my bag is a black leather rucksack style from marks and spencers that I bought for going to my job interview 2 ½ years ago and cost about £25. It's lasted me well but is now wearing a bit and I need a new one. I like bags that I can put over both shoulders as I usually end up carrying dd's school bag, lunch box, shopping bags etc and get a sore shoulder if the weight of my bag is on one side.

Would love to have the money to buy a really nice bag but we don't have the money to justify it so I can't. If I was a millionaire though it would be a different story.

One thing that I do spend decent amounts of money on is boots/shoes. As neither Dh or I drive we walk everywhere and in the winter especially I need a really good pair of boots for walking to work and home again so for the sake of comfort I spend money on boots or shoes. No point scrimping and having sore feet IMO. And if I could afford it I'd have a nice expensive bag to go with them but my budget doesn't go that far, shame. Maybe I'll win the lottery this week.

Tortington · 03/12/2003 23:06

£1.99 from the inside market in oldham at weekend when i went up to visit - bloody bargain

Cam · 04/12/2003 09:25

pph you're a young 'un then. I met TPT's uncle several decades ago,TPT had probably only just been born then. As for £700 on a handbag, Fendi croissant or whatever you've got, I don't like the style enough and its too small for the money. I would want a big leather Mulberry or The Bridge grip for that amount of dosh. (If I had that kind of money in the first place which I don't).

FairyMum · 04/12/2003 09:32

I never spend much on handbags. I think it looks quite cheap with expensive designer handbags unless your whole outfit is expensive and designer. A designer handbag teamed with outfit from Primark just looks like you have saved up for the handbag for ages, but can't actually afford it.

codswallop · 04/12/2003 09:34

Lidl dont give bags apparently...

it was kwiksave!!

M2T · 04/12/2003 09:34

lol Good point Fairymum!

M2T · 04/12/2003 09:36

Coddy - We have a very posh Lidl's then.... of course I've never been in there, but I've seen bags.

CD, M2T and anyone else on the anti-handbag rally: I have seen a nice handbag. It costs £90. DH said he would get it for me for my Xmas if I wanted it that much. I was asking if £90 (ninety gbp) was a bit excessive for a handbag and wondered what other mumsnetters paid for their bags (ie would they spend that amount on an everyday leather handbag).

I'm sorry CD, that you think I'm a vacuous twat (great phrase, by the way - I'll have to remember that one). It's Christmas, and if my one (possible) luxury is a handbag which costs £90, then I'm sorry that offends you.

With responses like yours and M2T's, I'm not surprised I'm too nervous to post on here most of the time!

Kando, firstly I said that people who spent £2000 on a handbag are cretins, not people who spend £90 (or even £700 lol!)

Secondly I said that the woman who wrote the article posted by melsy was a vacuous twat (yes I love it too!!!) NOT you.

Thirdly I then mentioned that I had been a twit for saying all that and that I had liked a handbag for £500 yesterday but didn't buy it due to my excessive twittishness on this thread.

And to cap it all dh said to me last night as I was recounting this "Oh good I need to get you something extra for xmas, where did you see it?" (he obv didn't get the point and is cretin and vacuous twat for thinking of spending that much on a handbag!)

I don't want to put you off posting I was just feeling a bit poppy yesterday and fancied a rant. I am actually rather nice and fluffy and don't want you to think of me as some scary vampire who will bite your head off for spending what is a fairly modest sum on a handbag.

So I take back all I said and if anyone wants to remortgage their house for a pair of socks feel free, it's your money! I would personally spend it on something that I would get more enjoyment from like a holiday or vast quantities of chocolate.

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:16

dunno how old tpt says she is, but she is 32. I'm 34. lovely to be called a young'un though!

Not a croissant, but a nice big heavy leather bag which fits everything and the kitchen sink in it!

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:17
