OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

lol Twiglett!

I am really shocked at £700 and slightly relieved to discover so many of you are too. I stopped reading "Vogue" after ds was born because could no longer stand seeing these things. I don't think it's about having the money, though. I probably could afford that type of bag now, but I would not want one. I would be thinking that the money represented so many days' holiday, or so many nights' out, or so many days off work, or so much off the mortgage, or so much less ds would have to borrow if he went to university, or so much towards my savings for my next maternity leave! I also think that having a mundane handbag in a city is a very smart move, because you are less likely to get mugged! The answer is £21 from Next.

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 16:06

Huh couldn't find one. Ate a bar of Thorntons fudge to console myself. Much cheaper.

Queenie · 03/12/2003 16:11

I used to stick all me cash in the back of me fag box!! Now, I am a non-smoking mother of two I own 1 bag which cost £25.00 and my working friends with no children inform me "it is very last season". Well then it goes with the rest of my wardrobe, me thinks!

florenceuk · 03/12/2003 16:33

It's all relative isn't it! If you earn lots then £150 or even £700 is not the issue - but what fascinates me is the range of attitudes. Please people don't feel bad because you bought your handbag for 10p or £700, it shouldn't really signal anything except how much you earn (or owe!). I don't have a handbag, cos I carry a backpack full of nappies and baby snacks and toys on my days off "work", and a backpack full of papers, umbrella, and other crap on my days at work. I want to buy one and have been vaguely looking round for one, but realise I would only use it if I ever went out - on current basis, about once a year!

M2T · 03/12/2003 16:35

Thats the point FlorenceUK! There havebeen threads about how much do you earn.... I know you can choose not to post on them, but it's still a bit "ooooooh look what I've got and you don't" IMHO.

Northerner · 03/12/2003 16:39

So people with money should not buy flash things to avoid offending people with less?

M2T · 03/12/2003 16:40

NO NO NO Northerner.... buy what they like. Of course they can. If I had the money I probably would too. I just think this particular kind of thread leaves some feeling inadequate.

Northerner · 03/12/2003 16:42

Oh, you meant this thread, not the bags. Sorry me dear. Crossed wires me thinks!

Bozza · 03/12/2003 16:50

LOL Queenie. I think my work one was about £25 from Next but not sure because present from sister. My non-work one is tidy but I'm making the most of DS being potty trained until no 2 comes along. It cost £6 from some outlet and contains my mobile, purse, keys, tissues and a pair of DS's pants. They've been in there for weeks but because they are black and match the lining I always forget to take them out. Even when I went to the pub.

M2T I see where you are coming from. £700 is like a month's mortgage payment to us. But then other people would say its like 3 months payments or whatever. So you can just keep on like that.

And Northerner I am definitely guilty of reverse snobbery. I am forever impressing people with my bargains and how little I spend on clothes.

princesspeahead · 03/12/2003 17:01

Not seeking justification at all! But the thread was a bit silly with all the "mine cost £3.50" "normally I'll spend £10 but this time I spent 45p". How much do you spend on a pair of shoes? Why would you make a virtue of spending less than that on something you use more often? Find a bag that you like and can afford and that won't self destruct within 3 months, and buy it. And then move on!
Works for me.

pph, so few people can afford to spend that much without thinking about it, it's not surprising your post got a reaction... i don't see why being proud of getting a bargain is "silly" for those with limited means. equally, there's nothing more intrinsically wrong with spending a fortune on a bag than on anything else - some people are just richer than others!

My friend got a lovely, expensive Fendi handbag from her parents for her wedding present. She used it last when we went out 3 days before their weddin. She put it on the floor in the beer garden but the uplighted floor lights were faulty and burnt a huge hole in the bottom Needless to say the manager that night was not very impressed at all but he did pay up, cash in hand there and then that night.

Personally I can't get into handbags, and most of the time just have my things stuffed into DD's nappy bag anyway. And I need a big bag for work to fir the kid's A4 folders into.

Have no problems with anyone spending what they like on them though - if they can afford it, no problems.

tinyfeet · 03/12/2003 18:05

Kando, I may be the wrong person to speak here, but my philosophy is you should spend lots on things you use a lot, and handbags fall into that category (along with shoes, watches, and certain jewelry). In my opinion, it is not too much money, but don't know anything about "Radley" or durability. If it is the kind of bag you could use every day or get a lot of use from it, as opposed to a party handbag, or something small and impractical, you should ignore the pricetag .

candy · 03/12/2003 18:44

This seems as good a place as any to ask something I've been meaning to get advice on for a while. I won a Gucci handbag in a competition and the clasp broke. Do you think I'd have to fork out loads for it to be fixed or might Gucci repair it for free if I took it in to selfridges?

tinyfeet · 03/12/2003 18:51

If you're near one, I think you're better off going to a Gucci boutique rather than Selfridges.

DH's old school friend is now a handbag designer. He used to work for Louis Vitton and now has recently started his own label. I think it is under his name or initials (Stuart Vevvers or SV). Apparantly he did well at London Fashion week. Don't suppose he is well known enough yet to appear on this thread but you never know for the future.
