OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

Waitrose do a good re-usable bag for 10p.

M2T · 03/12/2003 13:05

This is all relative. If you have the money then why not???
I don't so I don't..... IYKWIM.

I could NEVER justify spending more than about £30 on a bag that I will probably leave on a train anyway.

I hate these threads. Always make me feel inadequate and less feminine.
I know I know I shouldn't have read it.

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 13:07

What is feminine about blowing stupid amounts of cash on a bag? Nowt in my book.

M2T · 03/12/2003 13:08

I just don't have an obsession with shoes, or bags, or expensive make-up.... or leather coats.... or anything like that.

Am I a freak???????

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 13:08

No you are not. (well apart from the towel thing )

codswallop · 03/12/2003 13:10

I find I look fetching with a Kwik save carrier.

Hate these threads.

M2T · 03/12/2003 13:14

lol

I do think that to spend that much on a bag you have to have little financial worries!!

For instance, we can't afford a holiday abroad... so to spend that much on a cosmetic item would be ludicrous!

I must say I think alot of this is:
"OOOOH I JUST GOTTA HAVE A BAG WITH THAT DESIGERS NAME ON IT"

I have friends like that about clothes. They get themselves into major debt all the time to keep up with the designer names!

Purrrrlease..... talk about life being to short!

M2T · 03/12/2003 13:15

lol Coddy - WELL SAID!

Kando - What exactly was your point in posting this?

Northerner · 03/12/2003 13:23

If you can afford £700 for a handbag then why not? Personally I can't afford that much (most I would spend is about £50, so because that's what I'm used to I can never imagine that I would spend £700, in my mind it is too expensive and that money could be far better spent. However, some people do have copious amounts of spare cash available and if that's how they choose to spend it then so what? If we criticise them for it then it's reverse snobbery IMO.

BTW we're lucky if we have £70 a month for treats let alone £700!

CountessDracula · 03/12/2003 13:26

Northerner not being snobbish, just feel that £700 could be spent better than just being put into the pocket of some fashion designer who has far too much already.

M2T · 03/12/2003 13:27

Northerner - But why start a whole thread about it??? I don't think she was really looking for justification from mumsnetters, do you?

Metrobaby · 03/12/2003 14:06

M2T - if it makes you feel any better I am not a handbag person either. In fact I don't possess one. I have a rucksack instead - I think it cost about £20. I work in IT and nearly everyone has them so I don't feel out of place. But then again if they did have a handbag it would be strange as they are mostly blokes I've always had a rucksack - never could give them up from my student days. I don't even notice other peoples handbags either.

Demented · 03/12/2003 14:48

Everyday bag (changing bag) £35, a good quality Mamas & Papas one and has lasted almost five years, a good buy IMO.

I treated myself to a new handbag in the last Next sale, I think it was £10 but I hardly use it as I am very rarely out without children, but one day....
