OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

I have a JP Tods one and I am not saying how much it cost. But its red leather and fab.

Enid · 04/12/2003 13:26

pph you probably know my sister in law and husband to be from school then!!

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:26

Enid you have to! No exceptions for brides to be )(how are you feeling today btw?)

outofpractice · 04/12/2003 13:31

Really controversial question - tried to change my name but it would not work. I'm not asking anyone to tell their income, so using percentages instead. How much do people give to charity each year? Does it change as your income changes? Do you give regularly, or impulsively when a particular appeal moves you? I feel that I should give more, but don't seem to have it to spare, so I give some professional services free. If you include the value of that, I am giving about 5% gross income per year, otherwise, about 0.2%.

What's Mulberry? I've never heard of most of these makes.

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:35

enid! oooooh, tell all. who are they?

I give 10% of my gross salary as GAYE, have done so ever since I started earning. You don't notice it if it goes before you get it IYKWIM

Other bits and pieces on top as and when. Don't know what my dh gives, we do whatever we feel like individually. But he also does charity work (trustee of a half way house for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts).

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:36

ps cd, strangely enough I've never photographed my handbag! and wouldn't know how to share it with you all if I did.

mind you I could drag out the camera and email you a photo for your personal delectation, but that would be a teeny weeny bit on the wierd side, non?!

Enid · 04/12/2003 13:37

I actually don't know as it was a present but I know it was around £500. There, I've said it. But its lovely, holds tons and I would buy another one (if I can ever afford anything ever again after the wedding).

Re: wedding, everything is coming together, horrified by how much it has cost...off this afternoon to the reception venue to decorate christmas trees and pretty up the loos...quite excited now.

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:37

No dimbo, find it on the web and post a link!!!

outofpractice · 04/12/2003 13:37

pph - you redeem yourself - you really are just stinking rich rather than totally shallow and materialistic :0

FairyMum · 04/12/2003 13:37

Outofpractice, I am not sure of the percentage, but I tend to give to charities such as the RSPCA, Children in Need and The Salvation Army. I also participate in "Pass the Parcel appeal" for the Salvation Army. I try to give jthe same amount as I spend on Christmas presents to charities at this time of year, because I think that's what Christmas is really about.

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:37

Enid may your loos be the prettiest ever!

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:40

outofpractice I have no idea as I usually do it on an ad-hoc basis. Am going to sponsor a child soon, hopefully one the same age as dd so they can write to each other. Anyone done that? Actually will start another thread.

M2T · 04/12/2003 13:40

Kando! I hardly think I was agressive and I didn't call you anything and there are far more people than just CD and I commenting!!! I actually think that threads like this are likely to make a lot of people feel too inadequate to post!!!

From experience I knew, as did others, that this thread would be reduced to how much people can afford over others! A bit NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH stuff. Its happened before and I was disappointed to see another thread like that.

So please don't accuse me of hounding you off the board.

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:42

OoP I thank you.
CD it is three years.... six seasons.... old!
And I can't remember what it was called (if it had a name)...

Enid · 04/12/2003 13:47

Kando, sorry not to answer your original post - I obviously DONT think £90 is too much to spend on a handbag - hell, why not buy five

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 13:48

eeeeeeeenid, you are ignooooooring me

outofpractice · 04/12/2003 13:48

CD my mother has sponsored a child for many years, ie one or two at a time, and then new ones when they grow up and leave school. She did Actionaid for many years and then became fed up of getting letters saying that girls were being taken out of school and married under 16 on the excuse that that was the local culture (along with information that her money was being used for the brother to stay at school), so she switched to a different organisation which she likes better. Can't remember the name now, something Plan?. She always says that she wants the child to be a girl in a developing country who would not otherwise be literate. When you sponsor a child, they spend the money on raising the standard of living for the whole family, ie you may end up funding the education of all the children, or some things for their home, which presumably you would not mind.

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:49

Hmm it has lasted well hasn't it. Will let you off then....

Enid · 04/12/2003 13:49

Can't say their names on here though...shall I mail you?

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 13:49

Thanks oop, i think it's Plan International, I have heard of them.
