OK ladies, own up! How much did your handbag cost?

Rather a daft query, I know, but I have spotted a rather lovely leather "Radley" handbag. Trouble is it costs £90. (Even though DH has said he'd get it for me for Xmas/birthday present, I'm still not sure I can justify £90 on a handbag!)

How much would you spend on a handbag - do you think £90 is too much?

no it is an email friendly one...

have a lovely walk! I want to walk the dog too but am listening to ds2 snoring loudly in his cot... don't have the heart to disturb him

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 14:27

God that made me laugh! Did you just take that?

Have mailed you back xx

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 14:35

yes!
do you know how silly I felt photographing my handbag in the kitchen?!!!

janh · 04/12/2003 14:37

tigermoth, have only just seen your Q re my combat pockets!

Am only a pocket-person in coat weather - purse in one side, keys in the other. Like coddy, tend to use a carrier otherwise - very stylish!

CD, dunno if you have started your sponsorship thread yet but we have had a child from World Vision for about 15 years now - I did what you are planning, asked for a girl the same age as dd1 so that they could relate to each other, but she never wrote anything - we just got a drawing on the WV Christmas card - and the family disappeared when she was about 13 (they lived in Dhaka (sp? Bangladeshi city) so WV gave us another - a boy in Ghana who coincidentally is close to ds2 in age. He doesn't write letters either.

It's actually quite hard to write much to a child when they have no concept of your life, or you of theirs, really.

Issymum - that's the wonder of Mumsnet!

I give to Save the Children in the hope that the money will go where it is needed most.

Have considered sponsorship but not sure if it would be for the child or just for me, iyswim.

We went from bags to charities to make sure that people who spend huge amounts on themselves / bags also give to charities I think

suedonim · 04/12/2003 17:06

Given the discussion on DL's thread about PC language/words etc can I just say that a "cretin" is someone who has congenital physical stunting and learning difficulties caused by lack of thryoid hormone from birth.

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 17:33

Really sudeonim? Amazing I had no idea! Well shan't use that again (though it is rather ingrained will be hard to shake)

What about vacuous twat? Surely someone born with unfortunately large vag? Will have to watch my words

melsy · 04/12/2003 17:36

Glad this has calmed down a bit , was scared to post again incase CD had a shout at me again!!!!

I do agree that the girl from the article is a TW*T. In my religion she is known as a JP.

Any way still like bags. Why spend 2k if U can buy a fake that looks just as good???

I go to some charity events like BINGO & QUIZ nights, does that count??? If still worked would do more.

CountessDracula · 04/12/2003 17:36

kando · 04/12/2003 17:51

Apologies CD (squirms uncomfortably) I'm sure you are a very nice person! It's my time of month at the mo - that's my excuse for answering back (and getting wrong end of stick too), normally I'd just shuffle off and say nothing!

FWIW M2T, I'm not accusing anyone of hounding me off the board. I'd love to be more involved in the threads of mumsnet but just don't have the confidence to post very often as I never seem to get a good response! Perhaps you are right - I was looking for justification to spend the money. But I'm glad to see lots of mumsnetters telling me to go for it! (I did - today - although not the one I thought I'd end up with!)

Outofpractice: I give £5/month to MSF, plus occasional other £1 impulses, probably about 0.5% of our annual income. Does sound paltry when I think about it.

One year I gave my step-mum 2 Britannia Beannie Baby bears. I hated it because I think Beannie Babies are rubbish (sorry to offend anybody), and they cost me £150(!)... but it's so hard for me to buy my dad or step-mum anything they don't already have, and I never minded spending that amount of money on for their gifts, just a shame the only special items I could find were those bears (which have since plummeted in value, of course). This thread is reminding me that I was going to start giving them charity things as presents (like, Donations in their names, that kind of thing).

I think a handbag is worth however much happiness you think it will bring you.

codswallop · 04/12/2003 18:25

I dont really use a carrrier bag!!!

Is a name change in order to baglady??

Tinker · 04/12/2003 18:46

Yes, they used to have a picture of a 'cretin' in our biology book at school. Obviously, as teenagers, we would look at it solemnly

princesspeahead · 04/12/2003 19:42

and whats more, ladies, my son has congenital hypothyroidism (thankyou sue) so I appreciate the use of the word "cretin" even LESS than most.
Although thanks to the wonders of modern thyroxine therapy he is not cretinous at all. But 80 years ago he would have been

see my previous threads trying to find out if anyone else here had a child with this condition. (they don't by the way)
