For anyone who wants to read one.

I first read pterry at the age of 16, whilst stuck in hospital after breaking my pelvis. A friend sent me a copy of the light fantastic. I've liked the disc world ever since. Some stories I've liked more than others and thus re read more often.

Which was your first Pratchett?

jessie98 · 12/03/2015 23:59

I haven't read any terry pratchett. But I would like to read some - feel like I've been missing something important! I was wondering, do you have to start at the beginning with discworld, or can you pick any story out of it that takes your fancy?

UniS · 13/03/2015 08:14

I thinksome books are better jump on points than others .
Mort
Reaper man
Guards guards
The wee free men
Pyramids

I like any of the ones with Vimes in, and the ones with the witches and the ones with Death... Pyramids is good too. I do like the last continent although it's a bit apart from the others... and Moving pictures. And the one about rock music... (I could go on).

MyNightWithMaud · 14/03/2015 17:55

::waves::

I thought of the tea room when TP's death was announced, as I know there are several admirers here. I have only read one of his books and it wasn't really my thing, but I liked him very much. It's a sad loss.

UniS · 15/03/2015 08:03

Happy mothers day one and all.
Scout- you rock.
Donki- hay? Or carrots? Good luck with tonight.

Boy gave me card with lots of pictures of cake, how well he knows me.

Happy Mothering Sunday, one and all!

UniS · 15/03/2015 20:51

Well that was a busy day, phew.
UniS flops on the distressed chintz sofa and weakly fans her self.
Mellors steps in and fans Unis Lustily.
Unis very politely asks Mellors to stop fanning and go and put some more clothes on and bring some tea and hot buttered crumpets.

UniS has been getting ideas about having staff around as she and uni family spent part of the afternoon looking round the splendid Victorian Pile that is Lanhydrock House.
The morning was spent supporting boy doing his first duathlon*, followed by picnic lunch and then a bit more mountain biking as the boy had not had enough yet.

  • Bit of a monster for a first, but he enjoyed it, 5 km tough mountain bike ride followed by 2.5km off road run. He came 6th in the under 16s, beating a 14 yr old.

What a wonderful outcome Unis! Pass on my congratulations to the boy!

Scout19075 · 16/03/2015 16:47

I don't think I've ever read a Terry Pratchett book.

Excellent outcome, UniS! Well done, Boy!

When I read all of the physical competitions the Tea Room children are involved in I feel like a sloth, indeed! And SmallBoy would rather just go play then compete/practice. Then again I think he'd prefer a (factual) book to racing competitions.

It's Stargazing Week and I have one over the moon (pun intended!) SmallBoy. He's going to be gorging on Stargazing for little people (CBeebies) and adults this week. The Astronomy Institute at the University is having an open morning on Friday for the eclipse so we'll be there with our eclipse glasses. They're going to have lectures/questions & answers and a live video feed. If the weather is right in YOUT they're going to open up the telescopes for safe viewing. SB is, as you can image, REALLY EXCITED. A couple of HE friends from Scoutville are going over as well so we're all going to take a picnic to go the park after, if the weather is okay. And next week we're going to the Big Smoke on a HE outing to see the 3D IMAX film about the Space Station. It is going to be ten days of gorging on all things Space. I'm looking forward to seeing Maud in the Big Smoke next week, too. (I'm looking forward to the film, too, mind, but it'll be nice to catch up with Maud as it's been a few months!)

UniS · 17/03/2015 22:18

Scout - if your completely new to T-practhett, try The Wee Free Men as a first. I think you would like Tiffany Aching and her frying pan approach to scarey things.

Lovely, grey rainy day in Scoutville. After a busy week it's the perfect excuse for a PJ day and staying inside with toys and books. SB is currently using his blue (space themed) duvet as a swimming pool and teaching all of his (stuffed) friends how to swim. I'm on go slow mode and slowly cleaning the bathroom and doing other jobs upstairs. I certainly know how to have a good time, don't I?

MyNightWithMaud · 28/03/2015 10:25

Way to go, Scout! Hope you're still enjoying a peaceful time with (Not so)SmallBoy.

Scout19075 · 20/04/2015 18:37

After a day of dealing with medical and safety things I've suddenly realized that SB is five and, am I correct in thinking, no longer under HV care? We measured SB (to check his car seat was still sufficient as he's had a growth spurt and is thickening out again like he's gearing up for another) and I took him to the GP today to sort out his hospital referral and as I was looking at his notes (I kept the last hospital letter in his red book) and the growth chart I found the HV's card. I haven't seen her personally since SB's one year check though a HE friend of mine recently had a run in with her about HE vs school . Can I safely lose the card and declare ourselves free of her? (She was okay as a person but gave rubbish advice and no support so I'm happy to be free.)

MyNightWithMaud · 21/04/2015 23:12

It's so long ago for us now that I don't really remember how the HV thing works; does their interest stop on the child's 5th birthday or when they are 5 years and 364 days? Anyway, I'm sure you can steer clear.

How are things more generally?

teabagsmummy · 27/04/2015 10:58

Hi can i join? my ds aged 8 after suffering 5 m/c i have come to terms it will just be me ds and dh but im very happy with our wee family unit.
Had a great weekend i'm an assistant cub leader in my ds troup, just back from a weekend at cub camp with 25 cubs it was -4 at night, cold but great fun

MyNightWithMaud · 27/04/2015 23:02

Hello, teabagsmummy, and welcome.

I'm glad you had fun at cub camp. I'm a Brownie leader and about to take my unit to a huge camp, but only for the day.

Scout19075 · 07/05/2015 16:10

Voting is awesome.

Hello teabagsmummy. SmallBoy is five. He's recently told me he doesn't need a sibling because it would be a baby and "babies cry wwaaaaaayyyyyyy to much and who wants all that noise?"

Camping is great fun. I miss that bit of Girl Scouts/Guides and Scouts (currently on a medical break). SB and I might get out the pup tent this summer as our classroom and use our stick fueled campfire stove to cook lunch just because we can.

Scout Troop is good, Maud. SB has new glasses same prescription but he outgrew the last ones in less than six months. Each new pair he chooses make him look even older/more grown up. MrScout has been at the school yesterday and today doing all sorts of interesting Chairman jobs. We've arranged to go to YOU next week for SB to participate in another study it might be the last in this series he can participate in because of his age. He loves going and is excited to go again.

As for me, I feel surprisingly good. Still get the Rage some days but physically I feel so much better. AND I'm actually hungry sometimes!

How are things at Maud's? How is life with a teenager? (That I still can't get over....)

teabagsmummy · 08/05/2015 09:14

Hi thanks for the welcome
my ds was saying for the 1st time the other day he wished he had a brother but i only think this is because he and his wee girlfriend are onlies, and the rest of his friends have mainly 2 siblings.
When i explained the pros and cons he soon changed his mind plus he said our new cat his wee brother Grin .
Our new cat love sleeping on my ds bed so this makes my ds very happy.
I'm just heading to bed was nightshift last night was a busy night! i'll catch up soon when i'm more awake

Scout19075 · 13/05/2015 07:16

Day in YOUT today -- hospital for blood tests (for next week's appointment), SB's appointment for the study, and a promise of a new book and a trip to the JL cafe for a cake and juice. He is excited.

Forgot the drugs make me more sun sensitive and I am bright red. SB, however, is still pasty pale so I am relieved. The blood test won't be fun with my red arms.

Thinking about it, most of SB's close friends have siblings. I know three other boys locally who are onlies -- one I dropped for a variety of reasons, one we know through swimming and is a PITA (SB really only sees him at lessons) and third is the little boy down the road (who has HFA and is lovely but we can't make plans too far in advance because school has worn him out so we wait and see what sort of day he's having on the way home).

I've started planning the local HE Sports Day at SB's request -- of I want to make sacks for races, what's the best material to do that?

Scout19075 · 13/05/2015 08:52

I don't know much about football but SB is convinced there's a position called an "attackaler" who "attackals" people to prevent them from playing. Hmm

MyNightWithMaud · 14/05/2015 21:37

Hi de hi.

Hope the day in YOUT went well.

The Girl has two close friends who are also onlies and then other friends with between one and three siblings. Apart from asking for a sister when she was little (in much the same way that she might have asked for a pony or a hula hoop) she's never been bothered by the lack of a sibling.

Would pillow cases work as sacks for small children? You could probably get some in a charity shop for almost nothing and then throw them away afterwards.

teabagsmummy · 15/05/2015 13:25
