My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

OP posts:

@Faffandahalf

Isn’t it just Hmm
It’s remarkable, it’s almost as if these people are just waiting for any excuse to jump on the Muslim bashing hate train.

A concerned mum with a genuine question on how to approach a nursery if her child’s dietary requirements weren’t adhered to has descended into ‘halal is wrong’ maybe soon we’ll get the ‘hijab is backwards’ too 🤦‍♀️

Russell19 · 09/11/2021 23:19

I understand this makes me sound so thick but I didn't realise marshmellows had pork in and a muslim child in my class managed to eat one (biscuit decorating). I felt so awful and personally apologised to the family after the mum questioned me. Sad

TurnUpTurnip · 09/11/2021 23:22

Yes many sweets contain gelatine another common mistake at my kids school 😒

Garfunkle · 09/11/2021 23:22

Or maybe it’s because you tried to derail a thread with a mum asking for advice with goady opinions about halal slaughter that nobody asked for,
don’t have anything to do with the OP, bash the OP’s food choices etc etc

Umm no! I replied to a question about halal meat 🤷🏻‍♀️

On the same basis I have a child with intolerance to dairy products. Another who is is coeliac. Both have been provided with unsuitable foods/ drinks at some stage in their education. Should I shout it from the rooftops or deal with the sickness and then speak to the people concerned?

I dealt with the sickness (and diarrhoea) and spoke to the people concerned. It didn’t happen again. Ok with you?

I knew about haribo and sweets, unfortunately marshmellows just weren't on my radar 😔

What on earth is the point of posting this before you've spoken to the Nursery?

Alas a normal person reaction. Made an error out of ignorance (easily done, you won’t believe the amount of times DH has come home with a dessert, ive checked the label and it says contains pork gelatine), felt bad and personally apologised. A mild annoyance but not in the same league as giving a pork sausage.

Note how the poster didn’t go off on one about halal meat… rather recognised it was important to the family and apologised and learned from a past mistake.

Ozanj · 09/11/2021 23:38

@Catlover77

Sleep, that is correct, I do not eat animals. But the practice of halal meat is far worse and that is why I commented
What is happening in the world because of the vegan greed for almonds, avocados, soy and palm oil is as bad. What happens to kids in Africa as a result for western countries’ greed for smartphones is as bad. I should also point out that Kosher meat is physically slaughtered in exactly the same ways as Halal meat (I know as I did my work experience with a company that provided Kosher AND Halal certifications in the late 90s). Yet I never see people shouting down Jewish people about animal welfare per the proper religious processes - even PETA only ever has the guts to wade in when companies slightly deviate it from.

Not all gelatine has pork in it. Some has beef which many Muslims (rightly or wrongly) don’t consider haram.
Catlover77 · 09/11/2021 23:50

Wow! That’s a first! I have never been accused of being racist before.

I care about animals and feel passionately about their welfare.

HoppingPavlova · 09/11/2021 23:56

Slightly off topic but if people think ‘sausage’ does their mind automatically go to pork? When I think/say sausage the default in my mind is beef and not chicken/pork/lamb etc. I would always specify chicken/pork/lamb sausage but with beef would only ever say ‘sausage’ thinking that’s everyone else’s interpretation?

grannymrssmith · 09/11/2021 23:58

@Catlover77 how do you feel about kosher meat?

Yes, I'm not sure I've ever had a beef sausage. Can you even buy them in the UK other than in specialist shops? In the supermarket/butchers, 95% (if not more) of sausages are pork. You might get the occasional lamb or chicken but that's the exception really.

I assume lamb but that’s because I picture a kofta when ppl say sausage. As that’s what the halal option was at my school & as it was 99.9% Muslim the non-halal option was never stocked.

Exactly the same. Why, what are you trying to imply?

Helpimfalling · 10/11/2021 00:05

Food becomes halal for your child because they are without sin.

It's not there fault (the child's) just speak with the nursery is all
You can do.

I'd feel sad
Too.

Zandathepanda · 10/11/2021 00:16

My child ate fish fingers as they were listed retrospectively as the vegetarian option that day. I asked the staff and they said yes that was the vegetarian option. I asked if fish were animals and they said no. That was the second and last day she went to nursery.

I’ve not heard that rationale before? That something that is universally regarded as haram becomes halal because the child is too young? I’d be interested to see any fatwas on this

OP never suggested the child was at fault, but in the general sense yes there is no ‘sin’ on the individual who consumed something haram out of ignorance (be they an adult or child), but it’s my understanding that it’s the ignorance rather than the age that eradicates the ‘sin’?

Good grief! That's really shocking ignorance and stupidity.
Zandathepanda · 10/11/2021 00:42

Custardy yep. I may have asked if fish were minerals or vegetables then?! They looked bemused - no clue- so there was no point arguing. Only time my now adult child has eaten meat (knowingly).

IncessantNameChanger · 10/11/2021 00:51

Most nurseries have coloured plates and placemats. In one nursery only the room leader could serve up too.

I would double check what their policies are on foods and make them reassure you again it cant happen. If your nor reassured then talk to the manager.

Its hopefully just a input error.

GingerScallop · 10/11/2021 01:23

I need this phrase in my life.
Am sure it takes years of hard work and practice

I am in Aust, so possibly different here.
Standard snags are beef.

"What is happening in the world because of the vegan greed for almonds, avocados, soy and palm oil is as bad. "

This isn't a vegan problem omnivores also eat almonds, avacado, soy and palm oil

I'm a vegan who does not drink almond milk! I don't eat avacdos because of the environmental impact and there is more soy fed to livestock than humans yet it is still in everything yes even omnivores food 🤦‍♀️ I also try to avoid palm oil when possible! There is a great vegan brand called violife who do not use any palm oil. But unfortunately it is also in alot of omni food also so don't blame the vegans and try and make yourself feel better about eating animal products!
