My child was served sausages

Not sure how to deal with this one, so my little one started nursery and gets given lunch there, we are Muslim and they know he’s not allowed pork, they usually give him veggie sausages because and they let me know on the app, but today I read that he had normal sausages and I’m assuming it’s pork? I know you can get beef but I’m not sure if they use beef? I’ll have a talk with them tomorrow but if it was pork I just don’t know how I’ll ever trust them again! This is usually a very good nursery and it’ll be silly of them to make a mistake like this knowing he doesn’t eat it for religious reasons.
Has anybody else dealt with something like this??

@Thundercats77

What a relief it was an error op. Also glad that the thread did not get derailed from your original concern.
😂

Yes, thank goodness that didn't happen!

Glad it's sorted OP

I would be annoyed if it’s was me Evan thou your son isn’t allergic... if he was and that mistake was made they need to be more careful

Greenrubber · 10/11/2021 17:55

I have had issues in the past with school, my children have dairy allergy, they were adamant my son wasn't having dairy, he was having a bad reaction with blisters and open sores, we couldn't figure it out, kept checking he wasn't having dairy they kept saying no, they had their first week off, then went back it cleared up over holiday and then 2 weeks the reaction was continuing, the end of the second week the teacher came up to me and said I am so sorry he'd been getting milk from the canteen, he had no idea he was drinking cows milk as he'd last had it when he was 2. I couldn't believe it had taken school so long to work it out and the risk of him ending up in the hospital like he had done all those years ago before we knew about his allergy.

wildchild554 · 10/11/2021 17:59

You need to talk to school and raise your concerns, could also opt for packed lunch like I did.

Bobbins36 · 10/11/2021 18:02

Why does it bother you if your kid likes something you don’t?

Bobbins36 · 10/11/2021 18:03

Sorry that was meant for @AliceMcK not OP!

waitingpatientlyforspring · 10/11/2021 18:03

I'm a vegetarian and don't always clarify 'vegetarian sausages' etc when I talk about what I eat. It's probably that they just assumed you would know that when they say sausages you will know it means vegi ones.

Former Nursery Nurse here - while in college I did a lot of placement work in nurseries so I could wrack up hours of experience.
I witnessed a head nursery nurse giving a child sweets, chocolate and biscuits after the mum specifically said NO sugar (of any kind) they were a strict no sugar family and she made it very clear. The nursery nurse decided this was wrong and gave them anyway. I was just a student and basically told to shut up when I questioned it.
In another nursery I saw a vegan child be given a casserole with meat in it. Apparently the cook couldn't be bothered that day to make a veggie option. The kid (4 or 5 years old if I remember correctly) had diarrhea for a week after. The mum was none the wiser.
I've worked in some horrible nursery's and seen a lot that really shocked me. Mostly with young girls who just can't be bothered or older ladies very set in their ways. I've only ever seen 1 male nursery nurse.
I think maybe that's why I left the field entirely. 4 years of hard studying for a work environment I realised I really hated.
There are good ones tho. My DC both went to the same nursery and I loved all the ladies there. Complete dedication to their jobs and they went above and beyond to support both children and parents.
It might have just been a terrible mistake but you can't let it go without bringing to their attention. Let them know you expect better - you are trusting them with your child after all!

pollymere · 10/11/2021 18:14

Sausages are often chicken or beef. Apart from one faith school, everywhere I've worked is halal anyway so there wouldn't be pork or ham. It could be a typo. It could also be a screw up (although unlikely). Mine once pointed out an allergy and the lady realised their picture was on the wall with this allergy.

FrancesFlute · 10/11/2021 18:17

I used to work in a nursery and the member of staff responsible for a mistake such as this would have been sacked. They took dietary requirements very seriously. I once had a Muslim mum phone up cross because her son had been given the general veggie option (cheese something) rather than fish fingers. He could eat fish but a member of staff had just given him the veggie version of the meal. Wasn't me personally and the manager was really shirty with me for some reason Confused. Nurseries can be shitty employers.

CouldBeOuting · 10/11/2021 18:21

At my school we have veggie sausages or chicken sausages. We don’t have any pork (or bacon) on the menu at all. Hopefully it wasn’t a pork sausage but you do need to make sure your child knows what his own dietary requirements are.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 10/11/2021 18:25

Is there an option of giving him a packed lunch in future? Very poor on their part - let's hope it was a mistake on the app, or that they were beef/chicken sausages (if they were 'hotdog' sausages from a tin those are often made of chicken).

If you’re in in state sector it’s highly unlikely that your child was fed pork sausages . This is taken very seriously.?
Timetoretiretospain · 10/11/2021 18:28

Sorry I’m in scotland and that’s the case here .

HaroldSteptoesHorse · 10/11/2021 18:44

Very good chance they were either beef or chicken. Call the school and ask.

For the OP I understand your frustration,
Hopefully a clerical error

batsinmetv · 10/11/2021 19:07

Wow! They enter everything that every child eats onto an app?

Surely thats a typo then. There must be loads of mistakes. That seems like a lot of info

Tanith · 10/11/2021 19:09

I'd query why they were serving sausages at all.

The Government recently issued nutrition guidelines for Early Years settings and the advice we were given in training was avoid giving young children sausages because they're a choking hazard and high in salt.

5128gap · 10/11/2021 19:09

@CMZ2018

For the veggies why not let your kids choose instead of inflicting your extremist beliefs on them
You think vegetarianism is an extremist belief?
CrankyFrankie · 10/11/2021 19:11

I am guessing it is an administrative error and he had veggie sausages. Please don't panic until you know otherwise! My child's nursery always used to talk about meat substitutes as though they were meat when it actually wasn't. That said, my veggie child was fed meat once at two different nurseries. I just had to get over it, but i would have found it much harder in your position (ie as a religious belief). I don't think any nursery is perfect in this respect though, it's amazing there aren't more allergy horror stories imho.

Greenrubber · 10/11/2021 19:15

@CMZ2018

No parents really give their kids a choice when it comes to diet do they?
Veggies feed them veggie
Omnis feed them an omni diet
And vegans feed them a vegan diet

I'm vegan and so is the rest of my house my DD doesn't want to hurt animals so she's happy not to eat them
