Music that makes you cry when you just think about it, let alone listen to it?

Mine is the theme tune to the 70s tv series Black Beauty. The closing credits with the black horse galloping through the wheat field.

Sheesh, I am getting all silly just typing that.

I would definitely cry if I were to see/hear it.

Amazing grace - always got me all teary, but even more so now as it was played at my mums funeral.

Highland cathedral on the bagpipes - reminds me of when DD sang it at Glasgow royal concert hall when she was in junior choir/orchestra.

Time to say goodbye but, as a previous poster said, only when Andre bocelli sings it as there's just something about him

The rose - reminds me of my mum

Annie's song by John Denver. And perhaps love by john Denver &placido Domingo. My mum was a big john Denver fan but their voices are just amazing.

You're the one by Shane McGowan and Moya Brennan.

Probably quite a few more.

(I'm just remembering a thread I posted on recently regarding songs which always lift you up....I have slightly eclectic taste in music!)

Small Bump by Ed Sheeran as ds was born 15 weeks early. Can't drive if it comes on the car radio as always in floods of tears.
Father and Son - Boyzone again because of prem baby who didn't make it 18 years ago.
Forgot about the Abba one - Slipping Through My Fingers but in Mama Mia even with the not so good singing as it takes me back to when dd was 1st diagnosed with epilepsy and suffering seizures.
Feeling quite depressed now.....

Baleerie baloo by Karine Polwart. The lyrics and the story behind it are so heartbreakingly sad.

ghostinthecanvas · 08/01/2014 22:49

This song. It has a wonderful tune and has been played at (too many friends) funerals.
The Dark Island
Away to the westward, I'm longing to beWhere the beauties of heaven’ unfold by the seaWhere the sweet purple heather’ blooins fragrant and freeOn a hill-top, high above the Dark IslandOh Isle of my childhood I'in dreaming of theeAs the steamer leaves Oban, and passes TireeSoon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for meWhen I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island. So gentle the sea breeze’ that ripples the bayWhere the stream joins the ocean, and young children playOn a strand of pure silver, I'll welcome each dayAnd I'll roam forever more, the Dark IslandOh Isle of my childhood I'in dreaming of theeAs the steamer leaves Oban, and passes TireeSoon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for meWhen I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island.True gem of the hebrides, bathed in the lightLike a midsummer dawning, that follows the nightHow I long for the cry, of the seagulls in flightAs they circle high above’ the Dark IslandOh Isle of my childhood I'm dreaming of theeAs the steamer leaves Oban, and passes TireeSoon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for meWhen I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island

Everybody Hurts- REM

Into Your Arms- Nick Cave

Do You Realize? - Flaming Lips

The verse in Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall which begins "everything around her is a silver pool of light, people who surround her feel the benefit of it" which reminds me of DD1 when she was little.

normaleggy · 08/01/2014 22:51

I love Run by Snow Patrol by think the LL version is awful! That one definitely gets me though.

Glen Gregory from Heaven 17 did an amazing acoustic version of Freedom by Wham, my friend sent it to me and I just sobbed listening to it. You don't realise how moving the lyrics actually are. Love it.

Time to say goodbye was played at my Gran's funeral, sob every time I hear it. Which isn't often because I have to turn it off.

Yesterday by the Beatles.

Sid77 · 08/01/2014 22:52

The pearl fishers duet by Bizet - the way it builds up is incredible. Couldn't listen to it while pg and hormonal. still makes me teary now.

PinkPyjamaRama · 08/01/2014 22:52

Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt

A few years ago I had a cancer scare (CIN III found during a smear; colposcopy revealed further abnomalities. Eventually dx with grade 1a1 microinvasive cervical cancer) and needed an MRI scan to check there was nothing more sinister further up. Inside the scanner it's very noisy so I was advised to bring a CD. I'd just bought JB's 1st album so brought that and they played it to me through the headphones.

Of all the songs on the album this one stuck in my mind - perhaps its the message of saying goodbye, of leaving and yet life having to continue - and every time I hear it now it reminds me of being inside the scanner just a day after being told they'd found the cancer cells but didn't know how deep it was. It reminds me of how scared I was and of how vulnerable I felt. Even though it turned out to be nothing, this song puts me right back there and I cry every time I hear it. I have to skip it if I listen to the album.

Hurt - Johnny Cash

For similar reasons as above. The 1st time I heard it was then - my then boyfriend (now my dh; we'd only known each other 6 or so months) played it to me the night before the scan.

yummytummy · 08/01/2014 22:53

Erasure- you surround me, just a beautiful beautiful love song

PinkPyjamaRama · 08/01/2014 22:54

and Small bump for same reasons as Tulips xxx

Littlegiraffe · 08/01/2014 22:57

Hi Cohen. No, it was just a showcase night for the junior orchestras and choirs in our area. It was about 8years ago too. 'Twas heartwarming Smile

MsPavlichenko · 08/01/2014 22:58

Less well known but The Land of the Leal (mentioned by Beth in Little Women) is beautiful, written for parents after losing a child in the 1700s, I think. Also The Joy of Living by Ewan McColl, sad and celebratory at the same time. he wrote it as he became aware of his own limited mortality. Played it at my DM's funeral, she love his music. Can get both on YouTube.

blurredlines · 08/01/2014 23:01

Can't believe no one has said Eric Clapton tears in heaven

Also maxwell pretty wings

redrubyindigo · 08/01/2014 23:02

What is the song that has the chorus;

'Shake me I rattle, squeeze me I cry, please take me home and love me'

About a little girl wishing she could have a doll in a toy shop window on Christmas Eve. My mum used to sing it to me.

TheStitchWitch · 08/01/2014 23:04

Please don't go, by Barcelona. So sad. Sad

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 08/01/2014 23:05

Oh loads! Fix you by Coldplay - DS was in the SCBU when he was born for 4 days and this made me sob

Hallelujah by Chris Botti - YouTube it, it's amazing

The Littlest Hobbo theme song

Blindside by Dave Thomas Junior - "feels like I died and went to heaven" sums up how we felt when DS was born

Blackbird

I'm 39+5 at the moment and very emotional so need to be very careful about what I listen to at the moment or can easily end up sobbing for two hours!

PseudoBadger · 08/01/2014 23:05

Neil Young - Philadelphia
And the music that plays behind the 'who finished alive' round up of the Grand National...

foslady · 08/01/2014 23:05

I think it would be quicker to name the stuff that I don't cry to [fucking embarassing hopeless case emocon]

BiscuitMillionaire · 08/01/2014 23:06

Sia - Breathe Me (from Six Feet Under finale, but it's a staggeringly powerful song anyway)
