Thing is it is an issue for everyone as anyone could get an illness or disability long term and need support from benefits such as PIP.

It will impact others in the future claiming not just people on PIP at the moment. I mean it wasn't really possible to trust PIP anyway but this will just make it impossible for many people to claim, even those would would have had the enhanced rates in some cases.

Wonder how this will impact the Scottish equivalent of PIP, ADP is it called? I suppose they will stick with how it is but not sure

Just seen this post from John McDonnell MP

Despite all the concerns expressed by organisations & charities representing disabled people & Labour MPs & trade unions the government has gone ahead & published its Bill to cut disability benefits. There seems to be nobody in government that has a clue how disastrous this is.

I don't think the general public really understands the consequences of this, like you say anyone could need PIP at any time.. unless you have very decent savings and family support (not everyone has). No one is immune from disability.
Councils are going to go bankrupt, some are nearly at that stage already. I think we are going to see shoplifting and crime skyrocket. All to save a few £.

It's a shame they have gone this far. There are lots of things they could've done, such as means test PIP, review the state pension and of course increase taxes.

Viviennemary · 19/06/2025 16:19

The amount being paid out is not sustainable. Reform of PIP is needed.

But not like this. they need to look at it carefully and the impacts, as a PP mentioned look at diagnosis and getting rid of the stupid 'assessments' etc, maybe look at ADP for ideas, this is being rushed to just save money and will impact even those with serious disabilities.

Good for Scotland. It's going to be weird seeing such a divide between them and England.

Orangesandlemons77 · 19/06/2025 16:32

There already is quite a difference with Scotland I guess, for example they have the Scottish child payment, free prescriptions and I think care for people in their homes is not means tested.

Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) urged disabled people and allies to join its #WelfareNotWarfare rally outside parliament – and online – on Monday 30 June.

This is the day the government’s Pathways to Work consultation – which they have called a “consult-a-sham” – comes to an end.
DPAC will also lead a national day of action on 3 July, when the second reading of the bill – and a vote by MPs – is expected to take place.

Well done Vicky Foxcroft!!

LadyKenya · 20/06/2025 16:04

That is not the most reassuring article though. There needs to be more push back, from the people with the actual power to do anything about it, which is not going to be the people that will be most affected by the proposed changes.

MrsKypp · 20/06/2025 17:00

Good to see Vicky Foxcroft so disgusted by Labour for using such a blunt instrument to make cutbacks massively affecting disabled and unwell people.

I completely agree PIP needs changing, but the way they decide who should receive how much support should be adjusted VERY CAREFULLY before any cutbacks are made. Labour are doing it with a sledgehammer and in a very uncaring brutal way. I'm so disappointed in this government.

The trouble is, once someone has resigned they can't influence things any more. But it does show integrity.

Orangesandlemons77 · 20/06/2025 17:13

It means she can vote against it, I understand, whereas she couldn't as a whip. If I have that right!

OP posts:
Orangesandlemons77 · 20/06/2025 17:20

When they originally started PIP, did they not consult on the points required etc then? Surely there must have been consultation brought into that, which can't just be overruled?

Just reading this from Rightsnet, the site for advisors on PIP which was interesting and had more useful ideas about reforming PIP
