For PIP, the whole of the PIP element of the bill was removed. So no changes to PIP.

Instead, the government will wait for the Timms review of PIP to be completed before deciding on changes.

For UC, I had to cut and paste as not sure myself, but this seems a good summary:

What are the changes to universal credit?

The government had planned to freeze the health top-up of universal credit for existing claimants until 2030, but after the backlash payments for current recipients will now rise with inflation.

People with a limited capacity to work because of a disability or long term sickness, get a universal credit top-up payment of £416.19 a month.

But for new claimants from 2026, the payments will be cut in half, from £97 a week to £50 a week in 2026-2027.

While the top-up is being cut for new claimants, the basic rate of universal credit will rise from around £92 a week to £106 a week by 2030.

Under the plans, under-22s will also no longer qualify for the health element of universal credit.

Just a reflection a propos of nothing in particular, but I happened to be reading through a thread where a whole bunch of familiar user names appeared. People who are dominating the "disability is being exaggerated" trope. Spotted quite a few of them telling someone that it was absolutely ok to lie to their employer to get more paid time off because "what else were they supposed to do?". Interesting set of double standards.

Does anyone have a summary of the planned changes please? I've tried googling and all I can really find is the binned 4 point pip plan and not allowing under 22s to claim LCWRA

Bridget57 · 10/07/2025 19:53

I'm still wondering what they've got planned for support group contribution based ESA? Also, if they are just putting off all the changes till the Timms Report in Autumn 2026, then how do we know they won't suggest all the same stuff again and get it through this time. I think the press etc are encouraging disability hate at the moment with all these articles about how many disabled people are getting loads of money, mobility vehicles etc I think it's all designed to turn the public against the disabled, blaming us for rising taxes etc so there's not as much sympathy when the Timms Report is issued next year. All very worrying.

Yes, and it works. They have been doing the same things for years, the only thing that changes, are the groups of people being targeted. The tactics remain the same.

For one of my postgrad degrees my dissertation tracked the use of language, stereotypes and imagary from the 1600's through to "today", as it was used to outgroup people based on race. In many aspects exactly the same process, often the same language, stereotypes and imagery is being used against people with disabilities. Even just the concept of "deserving" and "undeserving" tracks back to a wide range of outgroups, and has been regualrly summoned to justify attacks on people with disabilities on these pages. The process has become deeply ingrained society and has multi-faceted usage. Think "deserving asylum seekers" and "undeserving migrants in small boats"; or the "deserving poor" and the "undeserving poor" debates.

TigerRag · 11/07/2025 17:46

Did anyone see recently the government blaming the disability cuts U-turn for the alleged reasons why they can't afford to remove the 2 child benefit cap?

Yep. We will probably be to blame for the economy news as well.

Yes, and it seems to be the case, if a constant stream is being reinforced at every given opportunity, then it will obviously be adsorbed more readily by the masses, who have been primed over time. I understand what you mean. It saddens me, that it is one of the most vulnerable people in Society who are being targeted in such a cruel way.

Orangesandlemons77 · 11/07/2025 22:49

I notice that there seems to be a focus on cutting sick notes and instead prescribing socially etc in the news, I saw a GP respond to this saying most people are actually sick and it was more persecuting of ill people.

Isn't it interesting how "welfare reform" is now synonymous with "sickness benefits"? Because they reckon that striking at the most vulnerable is easier than taking on the "well" claimants, despite the fact that everyone has singularly failed to get them into work. And by that I am not saying that the unemployed are scroungers, simply that if people with no health barriers to work cannot be got into work, how exactly do they expect to get the sick into work?
