Very interesting article in today’s Times. A dozen ministers could quit … around 80 rebels on the Labour benches … talk of the government having to pull the vote - someone’s stirring the pot in Parliament and in Labour circles.

I’ve also linked to the free archive version.

Not a cheep out of many of them when they first cancelled the winter fuel allowance. They're only old folk who cares. About time this PIP was sorted it's just become a top up for folk who want more money . The money should be going to the more severely disabled people. Not folk who just want a bit extra for no good reason.

Have you ever applied for PIP? If not, why would you say that? People don't apply because they fancy an extra bob, or two. Lots of people just struggle on, rather than applying, because they have been told how arduous the whole process is. Anyone can throw in their two pennies worth. It helps if a person has direct experience though! And in case it has been lost on you, the WFA, will be available to more elderly people.

Quite pleased to see that among the usual benefit bashing posts under the Times article there are some more balanced ones as well

Regarding the elderly people, they can also claim PIP or attendance allowance on top of their benefits you know Vivienne Mary

Honestly, I wouldn't bother. That poster loves to bash people on disability benefits

Just thought I'd there this here, it is a link to contact your MP about the cuts

https://z2k.eaction.org.uk/cuts-legislation-write-mp

Ask your MP to vote against dangerous cuts to disability benefits

Yes, I know. She keeps making these throwaway comments, which she then trots off, to come back with more. But if it helps to get other posters thinking about these cuts, who will not personally be affected, and helps them to see, and understand how damaging these cuts will be, and they lend their voices to help disabled people, then it is not wasted energy, hopefully!

Liz Kendall bid to win over Labour rebels furious over disability benefit cuts

Labour backbenchers are livid that limits on welfare could plunge some of the most vulnerable in society into poverty

Corrie is a funny old mixed bag of tropes when it comes to disabilities. I was on the threads during the period when Paul was diagnosed with MND. His acting was great, even the Billy Prayer-Hands actor stepped up.

But Paul’s PIP ward and upstairs flat adaptations appeared almost instantly, and I thought it was a missed opportunity to show the real struggle he’d have had obtaining them in RL.

Orangesandlemons77 · 23/06/2025 11:27

I'm just kind of updating this to keep people aware as much as anything, please feel free to add anything as it arises.

That is what is wrong with PIP. It was obvious to anybody that Coronation Street's Paul was in dire need of urgent help. It nust be more targeted. I read somewhere that applicants with low levels of anxiety and depression would no longer qualify. I agree with this.

I don't watch Corrie so no idea how long he was given to live. But if it's less than 12 months it's fast tracked and you can be paid weekly..

Yes, agreed. But the claimant still needs to obtain a completed SR1 form from a doctor who is treating them, and submit that, and wait for the DWP to decide to fast track without the claimant having to complete an assessment form.

The DWP then ‘aims’ to make the fast-tracked decision inside of two weeks. It’s often three or more. They ‘aim’ to release a weekly payment after two weeks, one week at a time.

Adaptations to a privately rented upstairs flat, after PIP had been awarded, would take many weeks if not months of means testing, assessment of needs, paperwork and admin. It would be co-ordinated by the Council and hair-tearingly frustrating. They would have included partner Billy’s salary as an archdeacon in their means testing calculations.

We saw none of that. Billy just announced very early on that it was all sorted.

It’s all real, you know 😄

It's not going to just be 'people with low levels of anxiety which will be targeted' it will be lots of other people some with quite severe disabilities.

Could you provide some examples. You shouldn't be awarded pip because the thought of working is stressful. Nearly everybody would qualify. It's madness.
