Done, but hard to pick a favourite.

Elton John's fans will like it, I don't like Elton John.
Iceland's banned ad is better.

I get the message behind it but it's not very christmasy and it's not hitting me in the feels. The start doesn't work for me

Elton is a strange choice - he didn't speak to his mother for years for a start, and the ad isn't actually very Christmassy! I like it as an advert but not as a Christmas one.

Monty the penguin is my fave. I've done the survey but not entered the draw.

not a fan at all. How much money was he paid? Just think of all the good it could do. Wouldn't large stores like this be better off doing a no frills christmas ad campaign and donate the millions they would have spent to good causes?

I don't like EJ so haven't watched it, but if theres a chance of a £50 just before Christmas I'd like to say:

'I found it lovely, heart rendering and sweet. It warmed me to my toes and reminded me just of Christmas. Elton is just the person to keep the John Lewis Christmas adverts alive'

Will that do?

I didn't know John Lewis sold pianos. So there we are. Learn a new thing every day. John Lewis: giving the gift of knowledge.

crap advert though

How much money was he paid?

Rumours say he got £5million.
Or, to put that into perspective, enough to employ 267 people for 40 hours a week on £9ph for a year.

267 people with a years income and a happy and decent Xmas
Or
Elton John for a few seconds footage at a piano...

(I know that's not really how business works, but it should.)

I quite liked it but not sure about using Elton John - I could think of more contemporary stars to use. However, I get the sentiment and it's certainly different to previous years' ones. And it definitely brought a tear to my eye...

Report
PrivateDoor · 15/11/2018 10:54

I quite like it but it could be more Christmassy and it is a disgrace how much he has got paid for it!

Report
ReflectionsofParadise · 15/11/2018 11:02

Awful. Elton John isn't even relevant any more.

Report

Let's gloss over the fact Elton John treated his Mum like shit for years?

Report
NachoCheese22 · 15/11/2018 11:05

Really disappointed with this year's effort. Not festive enough.

If John Lewis desperately needed a celebrity in their ad, I don't think Elton John was the right choice and comes with way too much baggage that distracts from any attempt at advertising John Lewis.

Between being estranged from his mother for a long time as well as that super injunction (olive oil coated threesomes in paddling pools?), paying Elton John £5m and giving him the platform for publicising himself to boot, bad bad bad move retailer who has been struggling with profit this year.

Bring back heart warming tales of furry creatures / cute penguins etc.

I love it. It's a beautiful song and I love the sentiment that one gift could change someone's life.

EJ fee was undisclosed so where are posters getting that info? It also says a portion was given to his charitable trust.

Feel very Meh about it. I've never thought Christmas, and immediately thought Elton John...

Q4: Does the John Lewis advert mark the start of Christmas for you?
How narcissistic!

Elton has got a tour coming up. How come he has managed to persuade JL to pay him to advertise his tour. Suckers!

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 11:21

Eltons fee is mentioned a few places,

www.digitalspy.com/tv/advertising/news/a870601/john-lewis-christmas-advert-2018-elton-john/?utm_content=buffer2a734&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=maintwitterpost

Sources from the production set told The Mail on Sunday that the singer had been paid £5 million – that's half the reported £10 million budget – for his one-off appearance.

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6146747/Eltons-Christmas-gift-John-Lewis-5million-starring-role-advert.html

Whether it's true is anyone's guess, only EJ and JL will know I guess.

Thing is.. was he necessary?
Let's imagine the story is of a child being bought a medical kit for Christmas, see her use it in teddies, the cat, parents, then at school studying, then at college, then at medical school, then in a children's ward giving a medical kit to a poorly child for Christmas.

Same message, cheaper production, more meaningful.

I think it would have made more of an impact if it wasn't Elton. Just a normal lad thinking about his mum
He famously went non contact with his mother for years.

Where's the christmassy part?

I ALWAYS cry at JL Xmas advert. Every time.

This one, nope.

Disappointing

purits · 15/11/2018 11:26

see her use it ...
I like your thinking. I got fed up with all the male looky-likeys in the advertisement. How was it supposed to inspire girls? Or are they supposed to be inspired to be simpering 1950s mothers.Hmm

Klutzy that would have been lovely!

I like it - it gives me goose bumps. Probably their 3rd best ad after Monty the penguin and the long wait imo.

Report
TheCountryGirl · 15/11/2018 11:29

Terrible ad. I dislike Elton John intensely and this ad is very unChristmassy. The worst John Lewis ad ever.

Report
FreddoBaggyMac · 15/11/2018 11:29

Klutzy that sounds lovely - they need to get you sorting their advert next year, would probably be much cheaper for them!
