I thought it was an Ad for his biopic i hated it and his fee really isn't in the christmas spirit is it 5 million pounds that's a disgrace imo

LizzieBennettDarcy · 15/11/2018 15:37

Dreadful.

Can't stick Elton John.

Enough to put me off spending my money at JL this year frankly.

JustineBMumsnet · 15/11/2018 15:40

Hello - this was always going to be a really quick one (sorry, we should have made that clear at the start) because the press tends to ask us what MNers think on the day the ad is released. Nothing at all to do with John Lewis's marketing dept or Elton John!

John Lewis facebook is taking pelters about it the stock reply from JL seems to be gifts shape who you can become or some such rubbish

BIWI · 15/11/2018 16:32

Hmm. Not a great survey if all those of us who were at work! don't have time to do it.

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 16:59

4 hours isn't going to get a cross section of the user base tho surely? Just a handful of responders and the odd cynical and grumpy types like me. 😂

VanillaSugary · 15/11/2018 19:08

Did I win the £50?

user764329056 · 15/11/2018 19:14

The annual waste of millions of pounds, shame on them along with all the others, how about a statement on screen along the lines of no ad this year, we are donating to help homeless this Christmas, that would be worth watching, everything else is wasteful consumerism, as ever

TwitterQueen1 · 15/11/2018 22:07

User why is this a 'waste of millions of pounds'? JL has pumped (sorely needed) money into the economy, enabling employment at all levels in marketing agencies, film crews, freelancers etc. Elton John is apparently donating part of his fee to charity too.

The great British public donates millions and millions of pounds every year to (very worthy) causes like helping the homeless - it's not wrong to put money to good use in the economy too.

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 22:13

John Lewis laid off over 1800 people in the last 18 months or so.

John Lewis, if true, could have employed 267 of those people on £9ph for 40 hours a week for 1 year for what they paid EJ.

What would have done the economy better?
267 people with a salary, paying taxes, paying debts, buying things, having a decent Christmas etc etc.
Giving one person £5mill, with some going for a tax deductable charity donation.

llangennith · 15/11/2018 22:36

Loved it

AgathaRaisinDetra · 16/11/2018 10:00

John Lewis laid off over 1800 people in the last 18 months or so. ^

Well stop buying from Amazon then.

KlutzyDraconequus · 16/11/2018 10:54

Well stop buying from Amazon then

Nope. Not the customers responsibility to keep shops and business running, it's the businesses responsibility to be competitive in the market place.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 16/11/2018 11:11

Well then you are creating the problem. HTH.

KlutzyDraconequus · 16/11/2018 11:43

Well then you are creating the problem

Lmao... If you say so..
I mean there's fuzzy logic and being idiotic.

Tell me...
When you go shopping for beans, do you buy a different brand each time to make sure you support them all?
Do you shop at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Iceland, Fulton's in a cycle to support each of them?
Do you get your fuel from Esso, shell, Tesco, Asda to ensure they're all supported?
I bet changing energy suliers monthly is a pain isn't it?
Not too mention car buying? One of each manufacturer each year..

Need I go on?

People blame Amazon for shutting shops. Bollocks. If the shops can't adapt and compete, that's their fault.
You don't expect Usain to slow down so others can get a medal.

TwitterQueen1 · 16/11/2018 13:03

Klutzy your arguments make no sense at all.
You quite rightly say that businesses need to be competitive - which (assuming your stats are correct) is exactly why JL laid off 1800 people.

You also say they could have kept 267 people employed for a year - which doesn't add up at all I'm afraid. There is a big overhead on employing anyone, eg someone earning £25k will actually cost the company £32.5k - pretty much a 50% overhead.

Not terminating 1800 employees and paying others to sit around doing nothing is not a competitive way to run a business.

And EJ's donation to his academy plus whatever it cost JL to produce the ad will have contributed to many people's wages and careers and development.

KlutzyDraconequus · 16/11/2018 13:14

Klutzy your arguments make no sense at all.

Aww good, I'm glad about that, the king of the potato people won't turn me into a eunuch.

The 267 people btw is:
£9ph X 40hrs a week X 52 weeks a year = £18720
5mill / 18720 = 267 or there abouts.

pepperjack · 16/11/2018 13:24

This has incensed me for reasons I can't put my finger on.
I was annoyed last year with the Beatles song- like they need more money or promotion. I love the Beatles and that song, but really?

This one, Just feels like an Elton John advert, the actors/fashions wigs are reeeaally bad.
Does he really need the publicity?
I love this song too.

nicenewdusters · 16/11/2018 14:14

A ridiculously wealthy diva who was not in contact with his mum for many years. I laughed at the end, not cried.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 16/11/2018 14:30

Oh bless, you're such a klutz. You have absolutely no idea how to run a business.

Now pop off back to your PS4, there's a love 😘

KlutzyDraconequus · 16/11/2018 14:34

Agatha yes, well spotted... I said exactly the same yesterday.. nice emoji tho... 😗

Yesterday 10:44 KlutzyDraconequus

(I know that's not really how business works, but it should.)

KlutzyDraconequus · 16/11/2018 14:36

Oh and also.. I play Pokémon in 3DS, not PS4..

Not sure why alluding to someone playing a PS4 is somehow seen as a bad thing in your mind?
Do you enjoy patronising people with different hobbies?

Now pop off back to you Venezuelan pottery polishing, there's a chicken. 😘

Armchairanarchist · 16/11/2018 14:37

Love it but with Rocket Man due for release soon I wondered if this swayed his decision to do it.

Ashton08 · 20/11/2018 20:33

🤞
