Well, the survey doesn't have a list of all the JL adverts over the years at all. They've missed 4 off the list- including, coincidentally, the other one that also used an Elton John track in it, Ellie Goulding, Your Song?

The reason I mention it, is because my favourite was the second- because it was so simple (and I still have the toy mouse from the ad) and I also liked the 3rd, with the 'Sweet Child o'mine ' Cover.

As for this year's - it's not very Christmassy, and they need to stop using Elton John. It's the 3rd time they've used one of his songs now.

One of my all-time favourite songs, and I love Elton John, so happy with this advert.

Warming to my theme ...
The idea was that the gift of a piano was "more than a gift". It inspired Elton to be what he has become. We then saw lots of copycat Eltons.
It would have been more powerful to see Elton inspiring people of all descriptions becoming artists of all descriptions.

I really liked it. Was a bit unsure where it was going at first but had the feels by the end. Although I didn't know about the mum stuff but maybe he had his reasons and presumably they made up?

It’s terrible and an advert for Elton John not John Lewis. I get the sentiment re give a thoughtful gift and it could set a child one a wonderful path but I LOVE @klutzy idea. You should have done the ad! A hospital scene with a doctor saving a life and flash back to uni, school, child receiving doctor’s play things. A policeman/woman flashing blue lights pulling someone over or something etc then again flash back to them zooming around a toy police car. A farmer helping a sheep lamb in the hills in the snow then again flash back to a young child receiving a toy farm. An art gallery opening and yup flash back to a young child receiving first art set. They should have woven lots generic everyday people. Children getting a toy that sets them in a path in life. Relatable stuff. Let’s face it how many children (a) get a piano and then (b) become famous?? To be honest all I could think watching at the end with the mum and small boy Elton was “didn’t he go NC with his mum for years”?!

But lots of people get paid disproportionately to what they actually do. Sports people, Hollywood actors, Musicians, TV and Radio presenters, talent show judges, reality show people, you tubers. It doesn't stop people adoring them and contributing to their already groaning bank balances.

Noddy Holder apparently gets 500k per year for 'Merry Christmas Everyone'. Shock

Hey, that's deserved. Don't diss Noddy.Grin

Q4: Does the John Lewis advert mark the start of Christmas for you?
It ain't Christmas until Noddy says so!

Not keen. I was getting highly frustrated by the ad thinking where is the connection to JL, only to discover the connection to JL at the very end (a highly tenuous one - since lots of stores stock gifts

purits I'm not dissing Noddy Grin. It's not Christmas until I've heard 'iiiiiiiits chriiiiiistmas!'. Just pointing out that some people earn mega money for not doing an awful lot.

I liked it because I like Elton John, until the end, when I loved it. But that's very subjective, because DS1 was obsessed with pianos from when he was a tiny toddler. We got him his first one when he was quite young and he's played obsessively ever since. And he was blond and round faced and wore PJs like that so it made me blub. But I doubt many people will have exactly that reaction.

My favourite Christmas ad ever isn't a John Lewis one, but the Sainsbury WWW1 football game which makes me feel emotional just remembering it.

disregarding the elton john part of it and lets be fair he has worked hard over the years - he didnt go on xfactor and become an instant popstar.....but i didnt like the advert, i spent the first half thinking WTF has this got to do with xmas.
I think if they had started with the small boy getting the piano, gorwing up and doing xmas shows and then revealed at the end it was Elton I would have enjoyed it more.

I hope owl and klutzy are copyrighting their ideas before the Fail JL get hold of them!

I think that ad is another fine example of groupthink gone wrong.
