Thinking about it, Noddy Holder would have been a better fit as he's associated with Christmas so much! Fire up the CGI team ...

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2018 13:05

It makes me sad, not because of the sentiment but because it demonstrates just how lovely his voice used to be - nowadays it’s bloody awful.

poorbuthappy · 15/11/2018 13:06

I did like it - but it didn't make me well up which every other JL Christmas advert has.

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/11/2018 13:08

I didn't expect to like it, but it was very good and I had the usual teary eye towards the end that I have come to expect from John Lewis.

I couldn't see the Iceland advert on the Mumsnet Christmas advert page though, which is a shame.

I also hope Elton's fee goes to charity, I'm sure he's not short of a bob or two.

YuhBasic · 15/11/2018 13:08

It’s just an advert for Rocketman really isn’t it?

I’m a soppy bugger but it left me cold.

Monty the Penguin ftw. Always chokes me up.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/11/2018 13:10

I absolutely hated it. I think Elton John is a very "Marmite" person, and while lots of people love him, others loathe him, which could alienate them. It doesn't feel festive to me, and more like an ad for his forthcoming biopic than for a retailer.

justaweeone · 15/11/2018 13:17

I get the sentiment but don't like the ad as well as not being overly keen on Elton John
If they paid him £5 million that's shocking!

Genius Lidl!

What do you think of this year's John Lewis Christmas ad?
AmmoniteMum · 15/11/2018 13:22

I completely loved it and welled up at the end - but with the caveat that few children will have access to a piano at home or piano lessons...

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 15/11/2018 13:25

Love that Nancy quick off the mark!!

I like the message about meaningful gifts, but I'm not sure if it's an own goal as truly meaningful gifts don't come from Department Stores.

I agree that Iceland have already won this year's ad without it even being on TV. #Frankiegoestoiceland.

purits · 15/11/2018 13:27

arf @ Lidl. So sharp (pun not intended).

SassitudeandSparkle · 15/11/2018 13:28

Grin That is awesome from Lidle Grin

purits · 15/11/2018 13:30

"Just because you don't have £872 to spend on a piano..."

The daft thing is, back in the real world, you can hardly give away pianos. People don't want them any more despite the plethora of piano and breathy voice Christmas advertisements.

breastfeedingclownfish · 15/11/2018 13:44

I really liked it. But I love Elton and I particulary love that song.

I thought it was very poignant.

MaMaMaBelle · 15/11/2018 14:02

Done! Not a fan of Elton & it's not Christmassy at all enough for me.

Also love klutzy's idea, that would've been way better!

Bloodybridget · 15/11/2018 14:10

Brilliant thread, so many funny, clever posts and fantastic ideas for what JL could have done. I'll watch the ad now . .

hiddenmichelle · 15/11/2018 14:12

I like it. But can't get that worked up over an advert in any way really - John Lewis Adverts get way too much attention!

Bibijayne · 15/11/2018 14:17

Genius @LidlUK

I love EJ. He is one of the true greats. However, this ad does not shout 'Christmas' to me, nor did it bring the usual JL Xmas ad tears to my eyes. I get the concept, I get the message, I'm target audience..... but.... meh. Doesn't work.

AspergersMum · 15/11/2018 14:30

Well that survey didn't last long...

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2018 14:53

Looks like JL marketing bods are offended and asked for this to close!

LimitIsUp · 15/11/2018 14:56

Do you think Rosehip?

VickyEadie · 15/11/2018 15:03

Elton gives millions to charity. I love the ad.

KlutzyDraconequus · 15/11/2018 15:17

"Please do our survey.. but only if you love John Lewis and Elton John.. thanks"

Weird...

SassitudeandSparkle · 15/11/2018 15:32

Yes, survey has finished so the post isn't pinned, I wonder if it shows in active?
