This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the Tilda Kids Rice range with their kids. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 1-8.

Here’s what Tilda have to say:
“Perfect for children who are weaned and happily eating solid food, Tilda Kids is a delicious range of rice and vegetables that have been especially developed with younger palates in mind. Every pouch is bursting with yummy, natural ingredients and hidden veggies meaning every pack counts as 1 of your child’s 5-a-day! The entire range of five variants is gluten-free and vegetarian, with four variants also dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Delicious on their own or with chicken, fish, meatballs or more vegetables, Tilda Kids not only makes meal-times easy – but delicious and healthy too! What’s more, they are ready in only 40 seconds in the microwave or just 3 minutes in a pan. The perfect cupboard essential for busy parents!”

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

All selected testers will be required to leave feedback on what they thought of the Tilda Kids Rice range both on a thread on Mumsnet and by filling out a short survey. Everyone who completes both sets of feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Sunshine veg

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

I really liked how convenient they were. They were easy to open, quick to warm up, can be eaten individually or with added meat and veg to make a full meal and transportable for a snack on the go (subject to access to a microwave).

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

I did a mix. The first one i served as a meal with veg and meat, I wanted to see what it was like and how the kids liked it. They seemed happy so I just used the remaining packets as and when with our normal eating habits. I took one out with me and warmed it up on the go as a lunch for my 1 year old and I gave one to my 5 year old as a snack.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I would definitely try other products, I was very impressed with ease of use and flavour.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Yes, I already have, they're great for mealtimes and snack times, the kids loved them and now I've read this thread I have new ideas to try for meal times!

Probably not as I buy rice in 5kg bags to save money.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
DS2 loved the sunshine veg
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
With the exception of cheese and tomato, all were dairy free so both my boys could eat together
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Lunches by themselves - with a spoonful of Greek yogurt for the baby. At tea time, with salmon, cod and stirred into a little chilli or curry.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I tend to buy rice in big bags to save money, but for convenience - if we were camping for instance, absolutely!

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes, for a quick and easy addition to a meal (especially when sleep deprived) they were so helpful
IndefatigableMouse · 03/09/2019 16:50

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Convenient and you know there's a chance of getting some veg in them!
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes definitely.
olbndansmummy · 03/09/2019 17:40

Sunshine veg was the favourite by miles
Easy to cook, easy to serve, easy to add to
Served for evening meal with chicken and chilli
Would try adult packs
Would buy as an occasional thing, but on the whole probably not

moonmrs · 03/09/2019 19:24
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Sunshine veg, a definite winner!
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Quick and easy to prepare, tasty flavours with added veggies, good portion size (for my son aged nearly six)
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
My son doesn't really like anything with potatoes, unless it's Mcdonalds fries! So I used the rice pouches as an alternative to potatoes when me and dh were having them. So my son had them with a roast chicken dinner one night, with sausages and veggies another night and even had a pouch on its own for a lunch, at his request!
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Would be interested to try, yes
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Depends on the price. In theory yes, handy to have in the cupboard as a quick meal and they taste really good.
StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 03/09/2019 20:16
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
The vegetable paella rice (unanimous!)
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Microwaveable and quick to prepare. Hidden vegetables. Guilt-free convenience food that the kids enjoyed.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
We had them for tea when we arrived home late with hungry children. Served them as a taste test with tomatoes, cucumber and carrot sticks.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Yes, I’d try the adult microwaveable rice packs.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes. Definitely the vegetable paella rice and the mild curry rice, which all three children loved. The whole grain rice was more popular with the adults. We definitely wouldn’t buy the cheese one.
Backhometothenorth · 03/09/2019 22:24

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Golden vegetable and paella

- What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Super quick and easy. Good that it’s partnof their 5 a day

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

He had these with his main meal instead of new potatoes or the flavoured packet rice I usually buy as he doesn’t like them.

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I buy dried Tilda normal rice any way but wouldn’t buy any more microwaveable rice as I can just do it myself

Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
No I don’t think so. The portions were too big for him so we wasted about 1/4 of each packet. I personally didn’t think they really tasted of much and I found the texture so claggy. He did like the flavours but I can replicate them myself. The only time I’d buy them is if they were on a really good offer as he would only have for dinner and not other meals.

Thank you for letting us try them

thismeansnothing · 04/09/2019 11:37

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
She didn't like any of them. But if you forced her and she had to pick she said the curry.

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Tbh my 7year old daughter didn't like any of them. She isn't a fussy eater by any stretch of the imagination and I thought the portion size was huge (a pack was more than half a plate which is alot of carbs for any meal).
The only thing going for them was the only took 40sec in the microwave.

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
She had them as a side to main evening meal instead of regular rice. We also used the cheese flavour in home made burritos.

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
It would depend on the price compared to a store own brand.

Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
No. Portion size was too large. Daughter didn't like any of them. She said they tasted musty, like cold veg soup. She said she'd rather have 'normal' rice and veg on the side.

EggProducer · 04/09/2019 14:57

- Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Cheese and tomato at a a push, but they were unimpressed generally. I put this down to my fussy children rather than horrible rice.

- What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Super quick and easy to prepare.

- Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Fish fingers, chicken nuggets, calamari - anything that required something a bit healthier to go with it!

- Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Yes. I don't love the disposable packaging, but it is a really quick and easy way to get well-cooked rice.

- Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

No, because my children are ungrateful dickheads and wouldn't eat it.

DownRightAmazing · 04/09/2019 16:44

- Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
The sunshine vegetable. The ones that were trying to be something else - pizza rice or paella were too bland for them. The ones that were plain rice and vegetables were fine with accompaniments.

- What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

The idea was great. In reality we found the portions too big (even for my nearly 7 year old) and the flavours too bland.

- Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Dinner with meat/fish and vegetables. We didn't feel the flavours were strong or interesting enough to eat the rice on its own.

- Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I've tried various Tilda rice products and generally found them to be good. I'd be happy to try more.

- Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Doubtful to be honest. I'm not sure what advantage they have over the 'adult' versions - the portions were too big anyway so might as well just buy an adult micro rice and share it...

westcountrychicken · 04/09/2019 19:06
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Sunshine rice
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Lunch and supper, with home made curry etc
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Dry rice yes
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
No. Plastic packaging, very simple to make flavoured rice from scratch very cheaply and without wasteful packaging. I could probably make this for about 30p
KathrynOfArrogance · 04/09/2019 19:44

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Cheese and tomato 🧀 🍅

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Great for me as not only do I never cook rice perfect, I also struggle to get the portion size right 😁

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

It's a little too much for dinner for my 14month old, so we use them for tea, normally with some added baked beans

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Definitely! As mentioned above, I'm a lightyear away from being on masterchef 🙃

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Without a doubt. Perfect portions in the perfect time. Convenient and not expensive ☺

Wetdogloveshubert · 04/09/2019 22:39

Unfortunately, we found that none of these rice dishes were enjoyed by my 6yo dd. The amount of "bits" (vegetable chunks or pieces) in these that they were almost entirely rejected on sight. I had hoped that the novelty, colours and flavours would mean no cajoling would be needed to try these, but this didn't happen.

My dh and I enjoyed all of the flavours, though some of the larger chunks didn't cook as well and were unappetising.

If my dd had enjoyed them I would happily have bought these as after-school snacks. They cooked easily in a pan, with no mess, and were colourful on the plate. These are an excellent accompaniment to meat/fish or just vegetables, and good with lunch, dinner or on their own as a filling snack post-school. We tried all three timings, and consider them best with dinner, to speed up getting food to my dd when she gets hangry!

Not owning a microwave, I would consider buying products like this again so long as they can be readily and quickly prepared on the hob or in the oven. Bring out more options with fewer bits and we will try again!

Range of flavours and microwaveable

I do already buy their rice

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
My son loved the Vegetable Paella variety best, but all were enjoyed.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Great size for giving to a kid, and nice and quick side with a meat.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Used for both lunch and dinner. Had with fish fingers, sausages, meatballs, chicken.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
If it was on offer, as I don't usually buy branded rice, unless it's on offer.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Possibly, if the price is good - for speical occasions (when needing something in a hurry). But usually we just cook rice from scratch for the whole family, so wouldn't be something for regular use.
Readitandsleep · 05/09/2019 13:11

Sunshine veg was the favourite, although they liked them all.

They’re handy if you’re short of time, otherwise I would probably just make rice. If we get in from a day out and kids are hungry can feed them in seconds. Mostly had them for rushed dinners / late supper just as a standalone meal.

I don’t know any of the rest of the range but would try it.

I would buy these again as a handy cupboard fix.

Mayvis · 05/09/2019 16:09

Dinner with various meats.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Possibly although supermarket versions are usually much cheaper.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Yes but not weekly.

Unihorn · 05/09/2019 16:59
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Mild curry by a long stretch, both my 1 and 2 year olds ate it all, whereas they mostly picked at the others.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Ease of use - I'm a rubbish cook and especially hate prepping rice even though we all love eating it. Loved that it's an easy way to get veg in too.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
All of the above! I split the pack between my two with lunch and dinner, and used the cheese and tomato as a shared snack for them.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I've used the adults ones before but they're more expensive than a supermarket own brand so only when on offer.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes for a decent price.
