This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the Tilda Kids Rice range with their kids. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 1-8.

Here’s what Tilda have to say:
“Perfect for children who are weaned and happily eating solid food, Tilda Kids is a delicious range of rice and vegetables that have been especially developed with younger palates in mind. Every pouch is bursting with yummy, natural ingredients and hidden veggies meaning every pack counts as 1 of your child’s 5-a-day! The entire range of five variants is gluten-free and vegetarian, with four variants also dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Delicious on their own or with chicken, fish, meatballs or more vegetables, Tilda Kids not only makes meal-times easy – but delicious and healthy too! What’s more, they are ready in only 40 seconds in the microwave or just 3 minutes in a pan. The perfect cupboard essential for busy parents!”

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

All selected testers will be required to leave feedback on what they thought of the Tilda Kids Rice range both on a thread on Mumsnet and by filling out a short survey. Everyone who completes both sets of feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
My toddler was awkward and didn't want to try them but my nephew happily did and loved the mild curry. My niece said it was too spicy!
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Super simple and quick to prepare and also one of their five a day
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
They had it at dinner with curry sauce. The cheese and tomato they had with dish fingers and loved it.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Yes it would be interesting to see if the adult versions are as good. Also my toddler would probably be more open to thinks that looked like 'normal' rice!
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again? Yes if the price was right

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Tilda Kids Vegetable Paella Rice . (reminded him of our holiday this summer - he polished the whole lot off)

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

The ease of cooking.

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Mainly as a side for the evening meal, we loved the choice and were sad when we had finished the trial. We served the Tilda Kids Vegetable Paella Rice with roasted peppers and tomatoes, Tilda Kids Sunshine Vegetable Rice with chicken nuggets, Tilda Kids Cheese & Tomato Rice-
with beef burgers, Tilda Kids Vegetable Paella Rice - on it's own as a snack, Tilda Kids Mild Curry Rice with garlic chicken breast, and Tilda Kids Vegetable & Wholegrain Rice with chicken casserole.

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Maybe a sweet and sour rice ?

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again

Oh yes ! - thanks for selecting me as a tester.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Definitely the paella one !
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
So convenient, good sell by dates and so easy to travel with; my DD was at her grandparents for a few days this week so I left them with her and it was so easy for my MIL to cook them for her with some chicken
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Both lunches and dinners. We used curry with the curry rice, plain cooked chicken in the paella and cheese and tomato rice and then baked sweet potatoes in the other two
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Yes I actually picked up two of the microwave rice packs not for kids this morning having enjoyed these packs for kids this week.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes but probably not all flavours. She enjoyed the veg paella and curry rice the best. It's also inspired me to print off a paella recipe and give it a go since we all really like that and it's a great way to get her to eat veg

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again? I might do if the kids asked

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Sunshine veg rice
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
So easy - if you have a protein leftover from a previous meal then all you need is a quick zap in the microwave, add a few cherry tomatoes or similar and you have a whole meal
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Roast chicken with the rice for dinner
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I think I’d be interested by couscous options but not dried rice as it is the convenience factor of being able to knock a meal together in a few mins that you get with rice in a packet or dried flavoured couscous that’s most appealing
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Not sure - I’ve use the adult rice for me before and may well look at whether there are kid friendly flavours of this as I have 3 kids and the Tilda kids pack size was too small for all 3 to eat

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Mild curry.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

40 seconds in a microwave. Very quick and easy.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

I served them prominently for dinner but did serve for lunch too. I serveed them with my usual dinners so chicken curry, sausages with tomatoes, king prawn kebabs. At lunch my son had the cheese and tomato one with a fried egg and balsamic tomatoes.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

In some ways yes but other ways no. I know you pay for convenience and sometimes these are not as healthy as what they would be if you made it yourself. On the plus side I would buy an odd one to stock in cupboard for if it was ever needed.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

No I wouldn't. I have priced them and they are too expensive and also not convenient in size with the size of my family

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 01/09/2019 00:48
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Sunshine veg

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

It got my carb obsessed and rice loving son eating some veg

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

We had it with sausages

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

We use the microwave rice sometimes already for work dinners but not owning a microwave it doesn’t really work for us otherwise

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes but wish it came in bigger packs. We all eat meals together so would rather have enough veg rice for a family as not going to cook one rice for toddler, another for baby and another for adults
Thiswayorthatway · 01/09/2019 11:16

Sorry but my DC were not keen on any of the flavours, they were too bland. They just prefer eating smaller portions of our food. No I wouldn't buy this product. May be more suited to toddlers.

Goingovertosusanshouse · 01/09/2019 12:17

giggleshizz · 01/09/2019 13:54
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Sunshine veg as the flavour was nice but not too strong.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

That it Cooks quickly - 40 seconds - and that it includes veg. One of the days we tested I had a veg fail but didn't feel too bad as veg in the rice.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Had it with dinner and used instead of pasta/normal rice/potato so a meat or fish, Tilda rice and a veg

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I already use the "adult" Tilda rice products and love them so open to trying any and all new products.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Probably not as I don't see much difference in her sharing a pouch of "adult" rice with me and just adding veg. I like the product but I don't see how it adds value to a family like ours who already uses the regular pouches. It's an extra cost IMO. Can see how it might work on days you are doing dinner early for your kids and eating something else later.

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
The sunshine veg

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
I liked that it is one portion of veg but you would have to eat the whole pack which seems a big serving for an under 2
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
We had it as a meal, alongside salmon one day and roast chicken leftovers another time

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
We already have

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Only on offer probably as they are expensive. And the pack is slightly too big for my lo but you cant keep it once its opened which seems wasteful.
DaisyDando · 01/09/2019 19:15
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
I was hoping it was going to be a vegetably one, but it was cheese and tomato, which I also tasted and agree, it was nice.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
The size of the portion is great, the fact they are so quick to cook but have a long shelf life. Really wanted to test these because of this!
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
I served the first one on its own as a snack; just because DS was excited to see so many packets and wanted to test one. However, that was not hugely successful, so the others I served with dinner, when DS was not eating with us in the evening.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Yes, I have used Tilda before and would continue to.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes I would. It was really good to go with a mild chicken curry that we batch cook and defrost when necessary, as it adds a bit of variety and also veg! I will look out for it when it is on offer. Thanks for letting us test this!
FMFL · 01/09/2019 20:59

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range? Love the portion size.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range? Yes I’d try the microwave rice. The flavours sound good.

Overall I would buy these again if the price wasn’t too high.

bluebell34567 · 01/09/2019 22:14

all the Tilda prices are too high.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
DS ate all the mild curry which I was surprised about because of the sweet potato. DD had a small taste and no more. She was looking forward to the cheese and tomato but didn’t finish it all as she said it was a bit tasteless. I tried it and had to agree. I thought the whole grain was the nicest and most versatile.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
So quick and easy! No dishes. Extra veg too.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
We had them at teatime. Had the mild curry with a chicken saag masala with some plain rice as I shared out the packet to try. Others were served with a mixture of chicken and sausages either on their own or in a sauce of some kind.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
When we had curry, I’d found some Tilda basmati pouches in the reduced section of our local co-op, and served them both. I was impressed with both the texture and convenience. Never tried pouches before. I have bought Tilda dry rice before, however our current financial situation wouldn’t stretch to it now. If it was on offer I would definitely buy it again. It’s cleaner than non branded rice.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
DS much preferred the normal rice. I think because of the texture. The kids was quite mushy compared with the normal rice. And I think, despite the added extras and the lovely smell while cooking, it lacked flavour. DS likes a bit of spice and there wasn’t much curry flavour. It was, I’m afraid, our overriding opinion on all the pouches we tried. I would however recommend them to anyone with a baby or toddler as I thought they’d be fab at that stage.

I’m quite good at cooking rice but I would definitely buy the non kids pouches at the right price for quickness, less washing up or if I need cold rice for a dish.

Thanks for the opportunity to taste these. We enjoyed the experience. The kids were much more mindful of what they were tasting which was nice to see.

BeverlyGoldbergsHairAndJumpers · 02/09/2019 09:01

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Mild curry. Really nice!

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

The hidden veg, because it’s one of their 5 a day.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

We used them for tea mostly, with chicken/vege burgers. My oldest daughter ate the cheese and tomato one as a lunch on its own.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Yes I would. My husband commented the rice is ‘too good for kids’ when he tasted a spoonful.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Yes I will. It’s so easy to use. Just pop the packet in the microwave, no measuring it out or mess, it makes it easy when I am cooking for everyone.
