This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the Tilda Kids Rice range with their kids. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 1-8.

Here’s what Tilda have to say:
“Perfect for children who are weaned and happily eating solid food, Tilda Kids is a delicious range of rice and vegetables that have been especially developed with younger palates in mind. Every pouch is bursting with yummy, natural ingredients and hidden veggies meaning every pack counts as 1 of your child’s 5-a-day! The entire range of five variants is gluten-free and vegetarian, with four variants also dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Delicious on their own or with chicken, fish, meatballs or more vegetables, Tilda Kids not only makes meal-times easy – but delicious and healthy too! What’s more, they are ready in only 40 seconds in the microwave or just 3 minutes in a pan. The perfect cupboard essential for busy parents!”

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

All selected testers will be required to leave feedback on what they thought of the Tilda Kids Rice range both on a thread on Mumsnet and by filling out a short survey. Everyone who completes both sets of feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
My 2yo enjoyed them all, but loved the Paella most. My older ones weren't too keen on any, apart from cheese and tomato. Generally I thought the veg tasted really bland. In the curry one, I couldn't even taste the apricots. It's fine for younger children, but older ones need more seasoning.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Very easy to cook and convenient, perfect size, nice packaging, and I love the range available, all including veg.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
I served them as lunch and dinner, on their own or with grilled chicken/ beef chili.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I already use dry Tilda rice which we love. I usually not keen on microwave food, but after trying these, I will probably try the adult range.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
I would, probably not regularly but from time to time, for instance if I'm working from home and need a quick lunch for my toddler.
1969angep · 11/09/2019 14:47

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite? We loved all of the vegetable varieties but "sunshine" probably just pipped the rest

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range? It's so quick and simple to use. Just pop in the microwave - simplicity itself!
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with? We had them with dinner - even the adults ate it too. The vegetable varieties made a brilliant side dish for salmon
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range? I can definitely see me choosing microwavable rice as a quicker way to cook our curry each week! Much less steam in the kitchen too!
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again? Yes
Dogsaresomucheasier · 11/09/2019 15:50

My six year old liked the paella, but was not keen on the others, calling them “ too soft.”
He ate some on their own as a snack after swimming, having had an evening meal at after-school club, others with curries, (which was good for the adults because we got to have jasmine rice which he says tastes like perfume!
I’ll buy the paella again, but not the others. As I cook for a large family I won’t buy other Tulsa products.

WatchoutfortheROUS · 11/09/2019 16:41

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
The sunshine vegetable and curry.

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
The convenience and knowing they have one of their five a day in.

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
As part of a quick lunch and as a side with dinner (fishcakes/chicken).

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
We already use the normal Tilda microwave rice and like it. I'm not sure I'd bother with the dry rice as we use the nicorwave rice mainly.

Would you buy Tilda Kids again
Yes as a store cupboard quick and easy option, but in general we'll probably stick with the normal Tilda as our children like them and they're more cost effective as a family.

Kerfuffled · 11/09/2019 18:50

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite? None of them really. Both DD age 9 and DC age 5 are a bit hit and miss with rice, and I hoped by doing this trial I might finally find one they both liked. DS didn't like any, DD only liked the paella style.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range? I think it's convenient and there is a good variety, I only wish my children liked them as it would make some meal times easier and add a bit more variety.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Dinner. Tried with chicken and I actually can't remember what else. Blush
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range? I already use the microwave brown basmati pouches, which DC and DD do like and occassionally buy the dry rice.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again? After a break by which time they will have forgotten that they didn't like it then yes I would buy and try again.
mummyofcutetwo · 11/09/2019 18:59

- Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
The curry one. He loved it - ate it all then asked for more. He took one mouthful of the sunshine veg and declared it was the most revolting thing he’d ever tasted. I then had to bribe him to try the other flavours, none of which he particularly enjoyed. I had a taste and found them bland too (except the curry one, which I’d happy have eaten myself!).

- What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
The ease of preparing. So quick and easy it can be ready in no time. Great for a hectic life, and you know they’ve had something decent.

- Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Dinner on its own as that’s how he wanted it.

- Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I’d love to try some of the flavoured rices but I can’t afford them.

- Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
I’d buy the curried one if it was on special offer.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
My son really enjoyed the mild curry variety. He tends to like stronger flavours.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Convenience and nutrition. Can just bung into the microwave and stick in a bowl for a health veggie lunch/dinner.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
I used at dinner time and served as it was. Nothing wrong with a vegetarian meal sometimes.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Personally have always bought Tilda plain basmati rice for myself, both microwave options and larger packs. Raised watching the original Tilda adverts in the 80s!
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Would buy the mild curry version again as it was devoured happily.
fourmonthstogo · 11/09/2019 21:21

Thank you for letting me try these with my children. It look a little while to get through them all!

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Probably the vegetable paella or the cheese and tomato.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Ease of cooking and included veg

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Lunch and dinner, for dinner I added bonus veg (sweet Corn/peas) and bacon or chicken.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I love the basmati rice already, it’s my go to brand, and therefore Tilda would be my first port of call for other dried rice. I find it quite easy and quick to cook rice anyway so don’t really need microwave packets, although we used these lots when having the kitchen refitted!

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Probably not, my 8 year old was very resistant, and complained a lot, although she normally happily eats rice and veg. The 4year old was slightly more interested, but not very enthusiastic. The veg was very soft and of a strange texture. I am trying to reduce plastic use, so I would avoid single use pouches, although they are v convenient and easy to cook.

feeona123 · 11/09/2019 21:33

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

The sunshine vegetable rice was the favourite.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

The product was moist upon serving. It wasn’t dry like normal ‘adult’ rice and it tasted great.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

We had the rice for dinner and had it with chicken nuggets.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Yes, I already use Tilda microwave rice products.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Yes, it’s a good way to get extra veggies in and is different to the usual meals I would make.

mooity · 11/09/2019 22:55

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

The mild curry and the Vegatable Paella one both went down a storm with my 3 boys aged 1-10yrs

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Kids enjoyed picking which packet to have to try. Mostly vegan so suitable for our whole household.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

They had it for dinner time. Each one something different but largely vegan burgers, stir fried vegetables.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Happy with the products so would possibly try others. Felt guilty every time I opened a small plastic packet to be discarded.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Possibly but it wouldn’t be a regular thing. Gave me some ideas on how to flavour my own rice but I think I would keep a couple of packets in the cupboard for last minute healthy dinner options.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
They didn't like any of them! My husband and I tried them and found them quite lacking in flavour, even though they smelled and looked nice.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
They are quick and convenient.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
They shared a pouch as a side with their main meals.

It's too pricey and I don't have a microwave.

Just to add-we had one packet left and it was absolutely ideal for my older dd when she came in late after a club last night and wanted something warm to eat before bed.
Healthier than toast and v quick.
I may buy a stash just for that purpose.

  1. Which tilda rice variety was your child's favourite??

Ds had the sunshine rice and enjoyed that. He's pretty good at eating his veg too Grin

Dd2 had cheese and tomato rice and ate some of it but mostly rejected ( loves rice does my LO)

9 year old had curry rice and ate it all . She can be fussy too due to sn.

  1. What is your favourite thing about the tilda kids range?

The bright packaging is nice and the dc likes that. Mum likes that there are different varieties and they are quick to heat. Mum also likes that they can be heated in a pan for those (like us) that do not have a microwave.

3.what eating occasion did you serve tilda kids and what did you serve it with?

For dinner with curries and veg and chicken.

4.would you like to try other tilda-microwave or dry products outside of the kids range?

I do sometimes buy the microwave range to heat on our stove top ( no microwave here) and they are very nice. I was surprised how nice the first time I bought them. I have bought the coconut , lemon and lime and (coriander?) pouches in the past year.
I currently have two lime pouches and one lemon pouch in my cupboard for dinner (curry) today.
I wouldn't buy the dry range because it is too expensive and own brand ranges are the same quality IMO.

5.would you buy tilda kids again?

I will buy the other two varieties to keep in the cupboards to try them out as they are on offer at my local supermarket atm. I'm not sure if I would buy them at the RRP of £1.15 per tiny pouch plus I usually shop at Asda and these products are not sold at Asda.
Plus it's pretty easy to cook plain dry rice and more cost effective anyway ( especially own brand products)
The dc will happily eat the 'grown up' pouches of rice too and they are cheaper than the kids range so no I won't buy the tilda kids range as a regular purchase.
As others have said, the kids range does smell nice when heating but is a bit bland to eat.

leaserspottedmummybird · 15/09/2019 12:15

We love rice in my house 😊😊

westcountrychicken · 20/09/2019 11:27

Just to add, I tried some last night. They're very bland, they taste like baby food mixed with rice, no real flavour and that funny processed sludge flavour.
