This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the Tilda Kids Rice range with their kids. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 1-8.

Here’s what Tilda have to say:
“Perfect for children who are weaned and happily eating solid food, Tilda Kids is a delicious range of rice and vegetables that have been especially developed with younger palates in mind. Every pouch is bursting with yummy, natural ingredients and hidden veggies meaning every pack counts as 1 of your child’s 5-a-day! The entire range of five variants is gluten-free and vegetarian, with four variants also dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Delicious on their own or with chicken, fish, meatballs or more vegetables, Tilda Kids not only makes meal-times easy – but delicious and healthy too! What’s more, they are ready in only 40 seconds in the microwave or just 3 minutes in a pan. The perfect cupboard essential for busy parents!”

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

All selected testers will be required to leave feedback on what they thought of the Tilda Kids Rice range both on a thread on Mumsnet and by filling out a short survey. Everyone who completes both sets of feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite? Honestly, my children weren’t keen on any of them, said they have a strange texture and aftertaste(s). Curry seemed to get the least amount of moaning.

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range? Quick cooking time and no washing up (good for when I have an arthritis flare up)

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with? Dinner (evening meal), comprised of tilda rice and a portion of chicken, pork, beef or beef and a mix of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and peas.

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range? I like the adult microwave packets.

Would you buy Tilda Kids again? Unfortunately no.

I was really keen on being able to give my boys healthy, flavoursome rice packs, unfortunately my children didn’t like the texture and tastes of the packs. They felt they tasted ‘weird’ which when I tried them, could describe as chemically?

AliBingo · 29/08/2019 17:53

Yes - already a big fan of the regular range of rice pouches and dry rice packets.

Yes definitely.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Cheese and tomato for both DC.
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Quick to cook.
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Lunch on it's own, tea with sausages.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Maybe
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
No. Its expensive for the portion size, wasteful packaging and as I'm cooking for 6, it just wouldn't be practical; much easier to just cook normal rice and add veg/sauce.

Thanks for letting us try though.

Cliffdonville · 29/08/2019 18:51

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

She liked them all but the cheese and tomato was her favourite

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
That it’s so quick! Also pre-portioned, one of her five a day and really tasty,

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
With our main meal of the day, veg chilli, veg tangine, veg curry, fajitas and enchiladas.

Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Absolutely, we already get the big microwave pouches but usually from another brand so will try Tilda next time.

Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Yes absolutely, I was really impressed!

xSharonNeedlesx · 29/08/2019 19:26

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Cheese and tomato.

Easy and quick to heat up.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Lunch on its own and then with curry and fajitas.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Possibly.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Maybe. My girls often share an ‘adult’ sized pouch of rice for less than 70p and they would need a pouch each of this kids version which makes it expensive.

Whatamesshaslunch · 29/08/2019 19:29

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Sunshine veg

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

So easy and a good healthy option - I’m really pleased they like the veg flavour.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Dinner. Sunshine veg with sausages and tomatoes. Mild curry with chicken and peas and yoghurt. Paella with yoghurt and asparagus and broccoli.

Cheese and tomato for lunch, with tomato (I’m so original! Haha)

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Maybe. I don’t love all the extra packaging that comes with microwave rice.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Yes as a quick cupboard dinner to have on hand.

Shehz21 · 29/08/2019 19:32

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

The Sunshine veg was definitely my toddlers favourite but she was also quite keen on the mild curry.

What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Definitely the convenience. Being a very busy mum working from home, this is exactly what I needed in my life! I would also add it's the perfect size for my daughter.

Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

I have used them for both lunch and dinner. I have used the sunshine one for lunch with grilled chicken and the mild curry with chickpea and salmon.

-Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I do use Tilda rice already and the whole family is used to it. I would definitely look into the other microwaveable options.

Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Little one loves it so that's a big YES from us! Plus I am not one to enjoy cooking per say so anything that's quick and microwaveable is the way to go for my family.

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Mild curry

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

We used it as part of Tea. They had it with fish fingers & mash
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I may try something nutritious from the range again yes.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Probably not as my kids didn’t really enjoy the texture or flavours of the rice; they both thought they were too sweet/sugary tasting!
HelloJackieYouLookNice · 29/08/2019 20:08
  1. I have to be honest - they didn’t like any of the ones we tried (we are only just back off holiday so we haven’t had a chance to try them all, we haven’t yet tried the sunshine one). They didn’t like the texture - they seemed very wet to me. Maybe for younger children they may have been better but I and they prefer the standard versions that I have bought before.
  1. The packaging is nice, we liked the elephants
  1. We tried them at dinner time - one day with fajitas, once with wraps (the day we came home from holiday so a ‘snack’ meal) and a curry.
  1. We like the coconut rice so I buy that occasionally.
  1. No, they didn’t like the texture and they are too old for toddler size portions

Thanks for letting us try!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 29/08/2019 20:23
  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Sunshine rice
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
Convenience
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
Dinner. Served with chicken or fish & extra veg.
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Maybe - if the price was right & they were healthy.
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
Probably not. They are convenient but I don't like the addition of sunflower oil & salt. Normal dry plain rice is fine as it is.

Thanks for the trial.

EsmeeMerlin · 29/08/2019 20:42

@AbbiCMumsnet
I have emailed, however got a reply to say out of office until the 2nd September.

I never received the rice, so am obviously unable to test it.

Apologies I read the email to get in touch if the rice had not arrived by the beginning of the week but just completely forgot about it, until today when I got the email about feedback.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Sunshine vegetable rice
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?I
Really quick to cook and didn't have to be microwaved as we don't have one
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?I
Dinner Chicken nuggets/fish fingers Stir fry On its own
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Not tried before. I would buy the dried rice and would look at the rest of their kids range
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again
Yes. I would buy a few packs of the sunshine rice to keep for a quick meal
PashleyB · 29/08/2019 21:30
  1. The favourite rice was the cheese and tomato rice
  1. The best thing was the convenience being so quick to microwave
  1. We had these for lunch and dinner, so alongside chicken/veg as a side and then also with stuff like a chilli
  1. I would use tilda again, not so much off the back of this test, but that other products (eg the regular rice) is good
  1. I would not buy tilda kids again. I am really unclear on the marketing - the product was an odd texture and bland (I know rice is, but this was supposed to be flavoured) which would have been fine in the weaning/toddler stages but my two are a little older now as they would have been fine with a regular rice and not a "kids" product. I was attracted to the ease of having something quick and easy to feed the children with, but for older children this didn't really do the trick. I am appreciative of the test, but really confused as to the target audience.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
My dd loved the sunshine rice best but told me to make sure I let you all know she loved all of them! Grin
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
I love how easy it was to heat them up, the handy pouch packaging and the range of flavours
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
It was very handy for lunchtime but dd also had them with her dinner. For lunch and dinner they were served with meat and vegetables
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
Yes, I already like to get them for lunches to go with chicken or leftovers
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
I already have! My daughter loved them so much that I got more. They’re really convenient and she’s told me I must always get them from now on!
SeaSaltandLime · 29/08/2019 22:12

My DD absolutely loved the Cheese and Tomato rice. She said it reminded her of pizza Grin

My favourite thing about the Tilda rice pouches were how easy they are to prepare. 3 minute stir fry and done.
Also, my (fussy!) DD enjoyed every flavour and (due to her being so fussy) it made me really happy, since they're one of her five a day. I struggle to get veg into her but she didn't blink when it came these.

I served the pouches as a side with dinner. Usually with a chicken breast and some peas. She also had one as a snack mid afternoon and it seemed to help until dinner, without filling her up too much.

I have used the dry Tilda products in the past but I would most definitely use the pouches now. I didn't realise just how easy they were to prepare - my new favourite thing!

Without a doubt I'll be buying these again. My DD loves them, they're quick and easy to prepare and are one of your five a day.
The portion size is just right and the variety of flavours is excellent - especially for getting different foods into a fussy child.

Pillowaddict · 30/08/2019 08:23

JohnWolfenstein · 30/08/2019 09:13

- Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
Cheese and tomato, they found the others a little flavourless

- What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
The children wanted to try them and they were really quick to do.

- Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
We had them at lunchtime l, just on their own.

- Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
I would love to try more microwave rice pouches. The speed was the main plus point with the kids product, but the flavour and texture let them down and maybe the "adult" range would be more appropriate.
- Would you buy Tilda Kids again?
No. I think my 5 year old was too old for this product. She did not like the texture, said it was too mooshy, and said the didn't taste of very much. I would, however, try the regular "adult" rice pouches as an alternative.
