This is the feedback thread for Mumsnetters with children aged 5-10 who tested out the Tesco F&F school uniform range. Each tester was given a £20 Tesco voucher to go into store and buy uniform for their 5-10 year olds and have been testing out the uniform the last few weeks.

Here’s what Tesco F&F has to say: “Tesco uniforms are our best uniforms yet and with features such as reinforced knees on trousers, As-New technology, Teflon coating (eco-friendly) and much more, we’re confident that they will last and last and last.”

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread and fill in the short feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Tesco voucher!

Thanks

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Unfortunately I couldn't I purchased 2 sets of shirts and 4 pairs of trousers so had to put some money towards it. However its still relatively cheap for a school shop! I would normally spend about £25 (which doesn't include shoes or named school jumpers).

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Yes

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

Not until next summer which is fantastic!

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

No I didnt

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes the shirts were a great fit for my son. We have used another known brand and their shirts were a smaller fit so these were brilliant.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

Brilliant, as mentioned above the sizing is much more generous that other brands that I have used. I also prefer the slim fit trousers rather than the other brands I have used in the past. I would definitely buy Tesco F&F again.

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
No, the pack of school socks alone was nearly a fiver! Without shoes and logo items, probably £30 per child.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
No. Only one skirt suitable and I had to buy in age 7-8 but daughter is nearly 9, would have preferred 8-9. No girls' polo shirts in her size, I had to buy boys'
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
The shirts didn't wash well. They will need replacing soon. Pinafore and skirt she will probably grow out of before they wear out.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
Uniform in the middle of a horrible old Tescos. No staff anywhere.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
The uniform actually fit my daughter really nicely and she loved wearing it.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I would prefer to buy online as our 2 nearest Tescos don't stock it and this Tesco I went to had very poor stock/size availability. It's very good quality and I have bought it in the past, online, but unfortunately Tesco direct no longer exists.
HowsAnnie25 · 20/07/2018 20:15

In addition - there were absolutely no trousers in dark grey for my daughter either.

welshcake80 · 20/07/2018 20:49

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I bought 2 dresses and a skirt , the t shirts and jumpers for school have to be branded so can't include. I would normally spend more than £20 just for 2 dresses.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
There wasn't a great range in store and it was all bundled together younger and older boys and girls so found it hard to find sizes
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these? I think the dress will wear okay and last a school year. But I doubt any longer.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?no i didn't.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in? Two of the items I've had to return as they didn't fit. Even with adjustable waist band the skirt was too tight. And belted dress was tight under the arms. It's a shame brands don't recognise all children don't just grow tall and thin.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I would look at buying again but wouldn't be my first choice. I normally buy m&s and the quality and fit is better but more expensive.
LyndaLaHughes · 20/07/2018 21:08

- Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I couldn’t get everything I needed as stock was limited and the sizes I needed were not available. Therefore I got a few different items I could find to have all of my children test. I would normally spend considerably more than £20 just because I like to have a few full sets.

- Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Unfortunately not - whilst there was a good range of different items sizes were very limited. Just as a point of note I did look for items for my youngest as he starts school in September and I found a distinct lack of smaller sizes available in all items. I did manage to get a couple of items in varying sizes for my older girls.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

The quality appears good and the items washed well. Pleasantly surprised by lack of ironing needed also for the skirts. Shake and hang method was enough which is always a bonus! My usually uniform brand lasts very well and has been passed down to a younger child so this would be something I would be very keen to see about longer term.

- Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Only to clarify the lack of particular sizes. Yes they were helpful.

- Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes it fits well and looks good quality. Both girls found their uniform comfortable. Particularly after having been washed.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

The price is very good and given the initial impressions of quality I’d be very keen to see how these items last long term. I am considering trying some other items if I can get them in the right sizes in time as I like to purchase well in advance of school starting again. As my youngest is a boy I am in need of new items for him also and I am not so concerned about ability to pass on so the value aspect is extremely appealing.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I'd usually spend around £100 as I generally buy uniform from M&S and Sainsbury's. If there had been things in DD's size I'd have been able to get her skirts and shirts.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No, I tried 2 stores and there was almost nothing. The only things in DD's size were a long sleeved shirt (multipack had been opened) and a skirt.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I couldn't get uniform suitable for summer.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

I couldn't find any staff to help.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Couldn't buy in DD's size.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

Again, can't answer as couldn't get the things I needed.

This really seems to have been poorly thought out by Tesco. I wasted a Sunday afternoon trying to track down suitable uniform to try without success. I'm happy to return the unused gift card.

Imgettingcheesefries · 20/07/2018 21:51

Not everything I needed because usually buy quite a few of each thing but I did get quite a lot and found it good value. I would usually spend £60-£70 including PE kit

To be honest there wasn't that much of what I needed in my store. The school uniform section was pretty big but it a lot of it they only had in the smaller sizes. Dd is quite particular on her school trousers and there were only 3 styles in the store, 2 black and 1 grey. I didn't think to order online, I probably would do that next time to ensure I could get everything I need

I usually would buy enough to not have to replace throughout the year and these seem good quality so I think if I bought a few more trousers, tights and shirts I wouldn't have to replace

No I didn't

Yes it fit great, no complaints from dd

I would buy it again, probably online due to small selection of sizes in store, but I was really impressed with the quality especially for the prices

KnittingNell · 20/07/2018 21:58
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
No, I got 2 pinafores (£6 each) and a skirt (£4.50). I had £3.50 left but couldn't find anything else in her size. I don't know how much I usually spend but I would buy 6 pinafores/skirts, at least 6 polos, 5 or 6 cardies and about 4 summer dresses, plus socks and tights, and PE kit so £20 is nowhere near enough.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
No!! The availability was awful. I tried both of the big stores in my city, and could hardly find anything in the right size. I wanted summer dresses as it was boiling but had to buy pinafores and skirts as that was all they had in her size. This would put me off trying Tesco for uniform in future.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
I think they would last the whole year or until outgrown, quality seemed good.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No, I didn't speak to anyone.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
The pinafore dress fitted well and was comfortable. The skirt didn't fit my daughter. I was pleased to see it had an adjustable waist as she is very slim, but when I pulled the waist in to fit her there was too much material gathered so she couldn't wear it as it was too uncomfortable. We do have problems finding clothes to fit her waist though so it would probably fit most children ok.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Quality was fine. Wouldn't buy skirts again as they are the wrong shape for my daughter. Wouldn't go to Tesco for uniform in future again as the availability was so poor, but might buy if I happened to be passing and saw something I needed.
imsorryiasked · 20/07/2018 22:00
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I couldn't get everything I needed for £20 - normally I would spend around £25/30 (two pairs trousers, six polo shirts, two jumpers), plus PE kit including trainers, and of course school shoes which never last more than 6 months!
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed? Unfortunately, although I visited a Superstore 20 miles away rather than my fairly small local store, there was a very poor range available. I could only purchase trousers and plain white pe tshirts as there were no navy blue polo shirts, or v neck jumpers.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Depending on how many times DS falls over on the playground between 3 & 6 months, by which time he will have outgrown them in any case.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I didn't see any staff to talk to,
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes the trousers fitted well and was comfortable.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
The Tesco F&F uniform seems comparable with other brands that I have bought in the past. I oftern find I have to swap between different brands as the jump from one size to the next is too great, but I would consider buying these again.
PatheticNurse · 20/07/2018 22:08

I previously always used Tesco but now the online ordering has gone l have shopped elsewhere as the plusfit rang

PatheticNurse · 20/07/2018 22:09

Range is never available in store

PatheticNurse · 20/07/2018 22:10

@Imgettingcheesefries - online ordering is not available anymore

RandomUsers · 20/07/2018 22:17

Could you get everything you needed for £20?
If the full range was Available, we probably could get everything we needed for £20. My dad wears yellow and brown, which was mostly unavailable in stores.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
Probably about £35 - £40.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
There were a good range of sizes, but it was hard finding my DD's school colours
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Surprisingly, they washed well. Will be happy if they lasted at least 2 terms as we have to buy a new set for the summer term anyway.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Fit was oK
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Honestly, no different from the ones I buy at Asda
cutie101 · 20/07/2018 22:32

Could you get everything you needed for £20?

No, unfortunately having visited two Tesco Extra stores I couldn't get anything I wanted due to lack of stock. Even if stock would have been in I think £20 would have been pushing it for a full set of ally uniform needs, but it definitely would have bought the blouses and Skirts I needed. Jumpers I get need the school logo, plus I would then need summer dresses, socks, PE kit (apart from the logoed top) and shoes.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Including shoes, most likely around £80-100.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No, the range was very limited, lots of black skirts but no grey ones, blue shirts for boys but no blouses, no summer dresses but lots of summer coulotte dresses which are not part of our school uniform. I tried 2 shops and asked members of staff.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I didn't manage to buy anything. The coulotte dresses felt good quality, so if the dresses are made with the same material, I would expect them to last the full summer term next year.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Yes, in both stores I visited I asked whether more uniform was available or coming soon, nobody knew the answer.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

I have no idea as there was no appropriate uniform available for my children.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I can't answer this, but I will look out for when they get their school uniforms in stock as I'm now curious to know the quality .

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
No we couldn't get a skirt as well as the dress and tops, so I would normally spend more than that on uniform. I'd say £30 per primary child.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
There was in our local extra. Yes we did.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Dress-when it's outgrown, tops-4 weeks probably. She gets so filthy at school!
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
N/A
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes she loved it.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I have bought from Tesco before and have been very happy. I would buy again.
Wincher · 20/07/2018 23:02

I went to my local medium sized Tesco and also to a big Tesco Extra a bit further away, and both of them had hardly any uniform in stock, and nothing that I needed. I was looking for grey trousers in 7-8, and they only had black, blue polos in 5-6 and 7-8, none of them, PE shorts and plimsolls. So I wasn't able to spend the voucher at all. I'm happy to return it if Tesco would like. Otherwise I'll spend it on logged jumpers via their embroidery service, but they wouldn't have arrived in time for the product test.

I normally buy from M&S and our local embroidered uniform shop and spend about £40 plus shoes. I have had the logoed jumpers from Tesco before and was very happy with the quality. Sadly I'm not sure I can answer any of the other questions!

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I couldn't get everything I needed as some weeks my child goes through clean shirts/ trousers everyday but I made a good start. I managed to get 2 pairs of shorts, 2 packs of polo shirts and a pack of shirts. This would cost me double the price normally. To fully kit out my child i would normally spend about £60-£70 including shoes.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
Yes there was a good selection of sizes and managed to get everything i wanted in the size I needed.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Based on general wear I think the quality seems great and they should last well but its hard to say when I will need to replace them as my child could have a growth spurt and need replacing quickly or the white polo shirts could get stained but this is same with any brand.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No I didn't need to speak to anyone as I managed to find everything I needed myself.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes its a great fit and my kids loved their new shorts especially and they had no problems playing in them so no restriction in movements in them at all and they said they felt comfy.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I would say that they are just as good as the other brands I have bought from in the past (Next, Sainsburys, Asda) and the price is great so I will definitely be purchasing from Tesco again.
QueenOfPharts · 20/07/2018 23:44
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
Yes could get most of it for that price probably spend extra on shoes, socks and then tights in the winter and then top up on extras through the year. £20 about right though dd only 5 and wee so will likey spend more as bigger sizes needed
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
I managed to get stuff in dds size but not much choice
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Will last till dd grows out of them
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No but plenty staff to talk to if needed
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes though sized down to 3-4 skirt and 4-5 pinifore
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Well to next and m and s. Yes absolutly

Could you get everything you needed for £20?

I could get a full set of uniform with this voucher, but would normally buy 3 to 4 sets of uniform depending on the time of year, (more in winter due to washing and drying clothes outdoors.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Between £40 and £60 - good quality shoes can cost me around £25 plus

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Polos - yes - trousers - no they did not have the size I wanted - so I went a size bigger.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I think the polos will last me all year they seem good quality, the trousers - purely due to experience and having 2 boys - the knees seem to go first - no matter what brand I buy, saying that I was pleased with the quality of the fabric.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Yes - asked them about the school trousers I could not find, they said the next delivery was in 5 days.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

yes both pieces fit well and looked very smart - very pleased.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I usually buy from George at Asda, and M and S - and I am pleased that the quality is as good as I have found elsewhere, both on stitching (i checked) and when I washed the set - still looked like new.

Sairelou · 21/07/2018 07:15

Thank you for choosing me for the product test. Unfortunately it was not all great, but I will be honest.
The timing of the test was AWFUL. Many of us were wondering if someone had mis-timed it? A lot of stores only had the dregs of the "old" uniform left as the new style uniform hadn't launched yet. In fact I had a mail shot through for the new uniform last week, the week we were meant to be testing it!

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I could, minus shoes. If I had bought shoes too it would have taken me over the £20. I bought 2x packs of polo shirts, 1 pack of shorts, 1 pack of sports shorts and some socks.
I would usually buy two or three sets (because he's 5, and we all know how messy they get!) and spend about £60 inc shoes (exc school jumpers as they are branded).

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No. There was half a tall gondola worth. It wasn't very clearly merchandised at all, was very messy and difficult to shop. It was last years stock. I ask for different sizes and got told to come back tomorrow. When I returned the sizes still weren't out so someone went to the stockroom for me.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I will definitely need to get new polo shirts for September. I washed once at 40 and tumbled on low and the shrinkage was awful! The stain resistant coating was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. (see attached photos). After two washed the stitching on the hem had started to unravel.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Yes I spoke to them about it. No they weren't very knowledgeable. When I asked if it was the new range they shrugged and said they didn't know when they would get the new range in.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes it fitted well (straight out of the pack, not when shrunk!) and my son had no complaints.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

The shorts and socks were ok. The polo shirts were ok until they shrunk. I wouldn't buy polo shirts from Tesco again.
However I did buy my son his shoes from Tesco last year and they have lasted well through the school year, I only had to buy him a new pair when he outgrew them!

Sairelou · 21/07/2018 08:44

Sorry, for some reason it won't let me upload the photos of the shrinkage Hmm however they can be found on the original product test request thread if anyone is interested

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Couldn’t get everything as they didn’t have much stock, and put School colours often aren’t in stores anyway. Got some grey stuff and basics though.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Stock was very limited in our store even though it’s a huge Tesco extra. Also all the boys’ stuff was under a huge sign saying “girls uniform” which didn’t help.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

Hopefully they’ll last at least 2 school years. I have boys who are one school year apart, and have previously handed down uniform from other stores to the younger one unless they get holes in

- Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Just to ask where the boys stuff was, as there were only signs for girls and the range wasn’t obvious

- Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes fits fine

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

Good pricing and seems fine so far. Time will tell with how tough it is! If it lasts well I would definitely buy again due to convenience, but hope my local store gets a better range. Maybe it’s just because it’s the end of the school year. Shame they’ve stopped online shopping.

Thank you for letting me test!

islandchatter · 21/07/2018 09:50
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

When I completed the original form, it was for my 9 year old daughter - who wears red summer dresses at this time of year (and different uniform in the winter). £20 would pretty much have bought me 2 dresses and some socks - although there were no dresses available in her school colour (apart from one aged 3-4).
Instead, I had a look to see what I could get for my 5 year old son - he wears black shorts to school but again, there were none available in his size and colour. Instead, i bought him some trousers for next year as well as some polo shirts.
£20 would kit him out on these basics as well as socks but he needs school logo jumpers (and his school is not part of the Tesco system) so they have to be bought elsewhere.
Shoes would not be covered in £20 - for either child.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

As above, the stock in the colours and sizes that I need was extremely limited or just not available. I spoke to the staff who explained that most schools in the local area wear grey trousers and blue or green dresses, so that tends to be what they stock.
I live on an island and this is the only Tesco store in the county. There are nearly 50 primary schools here and this is one of the reasons I have rarely bought uniform from Tesco before.
I tried ordering online but, with Tesco Direct closing a week or so after, the stock was limited and again, nothing was available in my daughters size.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

My son has yet to wear the trousers we bought although has tried them on. They seem to be well-made and have reinforced knees so they could last him the year. However, he tends to go through his knees frequently so we'll have to see!
I bought him some polo shirts which he has worn but they see to lose their shape after a couple of washes. They seem to be staying fairly clean - you can generally tell what he has done all day as it will be depicted on his t-shirt! So far they seem to be staying white.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

As above, they explained why there was not much stock in the colours I needed. They were also surprised that i was buying school uniform just a few weeks before the end of the school year. They were perfectly polite and knowledgeable - just couldn't help me be able to buy what i needed.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
My son is 5 and cares very little for being comfortable! He has worn the polo shirts happily and the 5-6 years fitted him fine. He has tried on the trousers but was not going to wear them to school in this heat. Again, the 5-6 size fit him and should still be fine in September.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

As far as basic school uniform items, they seem fine. The lack of stock in the colours and sizes I need for my children will put me off making the journey to this store (and, therefore Tesco - it being the only one in county/ on the island). Over the years (I have a 12 year old child too), I have bought school uniform from all the supermarkets and I cannot see any benefit in making a trip to Tesco to not get what i need.
Quality-wise it seems fine.
Price-wise it seems fine.

  1. I could get all the basic/non-branded items for £20 - not including shoes. DS is just finishing Reception and thus far 2-3 sets of clothes is plenty for us. £20 on basics, £40 on shoes. If branded stuff if needed it’s a lot more.

  2. There was a very small but perfectly adequate range in our local (big) store. There were plenty of sizes and it was easy to find what I wanted.

  3. The trousers look as though they will last a while - esp with the reinforced knees. I imagine he will get too long for them in about 6 months. The white shirts I’m not great at keeping white - only a few months for these.

  4. I didn’t need to talk to anyone

  5. The uniform fit fairly well, DS is long and skinny and sometimes adjustable waist trousers look ridiculous on their smallest setting but these were ok. They were comfortable.

  6. The uniform was similar in quality to Sainsbury’s but it was cheaper. It doesn’t feel as nice as M and S stuff - but a lot cheaper. Depending on how they wear and wash I will buy again...

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
Unfortunately not, I wanted red polo shirts and the only ones available were white, there were no red jumpers at all, just cardigans and I bought the last pair of shorts in size 6-7. I did buy some black socks to top it up though and they're fab!

I'd usually spend around £35 on four pairs of trousers or shorts, 4 polo shirts and 4 jumpers.

Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
I was disappointed to be honest. I purposely went to a Tesco Extra so I'd have a good choice but there was a limited range of products and there wasn't much available at all in size 6 to 7.

Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
The shorts have already started to fray and the white shirts aren't quite as dazzling as they were so I would guess they'll need replacing by Christmas at the latest. The shirts are very stain resistant though, they looked shocking at the end of some days but most of it came out in the wash which I was impressed with.

Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I didn't approach anyone, I had my toddler with me and the store was busy and it was a bit chaotic

Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
My son is 5 and a half and has been in age 6 to 7 for a while. I thought the uniform did fit really nicely. I found the sizing slightly larger than other brands, the shorts have quite a bit of growing room but the adjustable waist means that he can wear them now and will hopefully still be in them in September. He absolutely LOVED the shorts, asked to wear them every day but wasn't keen on the white shirts, I think because they looked so grubby by the end of the day (he's quite a clean and tidy kid)

Honestly? I thought it was pretty much the same as the others. We have pieces of uniform from all the major supermarkets and there doesn't seem to be much difference. The only thing that put me off was the limited range and availability in his size. If I happened to see the uniform available I would buy it but I wouldn't make a special trip.
