This is the feedback thread for Mumsnetters with children aged 5-10 who tested out the Tesco F&F school uniform range. Each tester was given a £20 Tesco voucher to go into store and buy uniform for their 5-10 year olds and have been testing out the uniform the last few weeks.

Here’s what Tesco F&F has to say: “Tesco uniforms are our best uniforms yet and with features such as reinforced knees on trousers, As-New technology, Teflon coating (eco-friendly) and much more, we’re confident that they will last and last and last.”

Testers please answer the following questions:

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread and fill in the short feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Tesco voucher!

Thanks

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

If they actually had everything in stock maybe, however a pair of trousers, 2 shorts and a jumper cost around £15 and I normally buy 5 of everything so no. We normally do the Aldi/Lidl stuff so around £25 all in

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No it was awful, no blue polo's, only 3 items in 6-7 years

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I imagine by Christmas

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Yes, I had to go to two stores and both said their range wasn't due out yet so they only had bits and bobs of what was left from the last lot

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

It was on the small side, it fit and was comfy to play in but it won't last the full year

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

Poorly, lack of products in a whole let alone in the school colours needed, I most probably won't bother buying it again

boddtm · 21/07/2018 11:49

Normally, I spend a good £40-50 for my boy's uniform, and top it up throughout the school year. I thought the polo shirts etc were good value for money and since my lad comes home with everything from mud to paint to food etc on his tops, we tend to go through a few packs in a term.
I did struggle to get the sizes I wanted, but after a few visits managed to hit a 'good day' and got some great value trousers etc
I expect, with regards to the trousers, I will only have to replace these if he rips a hole in the knee - which doesn't look likely with the reinforcement, or if he grows out of them.
The staff at Tesco were pretty helpful in telling me when stock was being delivered next so I could come back and get the right sizes.
The fit was good for my little lad - the adjustable waist is often an issue as he's too skinny for the usual sizes but these were great. I normally buy from M&S but given the feel of this, I think I may have been converted. Thanks for the chance to test these Tesco!

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

No, I didn’t get everything, but I get five full uniforms to last the week, as DS can annihilate trousers and shirts in a day! I got 4pr trousers and 2 t-shirts for PE - especially as for the past hot weeks they were permitted to wear t-shirts rather than collared shirts.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Yes, I always get skinny trousers and they were available in his size. I would have preferred the t-shirts one size up but they didn’t have any.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

When he grows out of them - which will be within a term at current rates of growth.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

No, didn’t speak to any staff.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes, DS likes it.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I have always preferred Tesco - I find they last longer and are easier to wash. Especially shirts, which tend to come home with everything from marker pen to half the allotment on them.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
No, I could get one set of uniform, not including shoes, so skirt/trousers, polo tops & cardigan then a summer play suit
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
Yes, I found the sizes I needed in the specific items I wanted
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Not until they have been grown out of or stained
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I didn't need to speak to staff on this visit
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes, it fit well, we struggle with trousers on my tall but slim daughter and these are the ones we found fit best.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I would generally always go to Tesco for uniform, only shopping elsewhere for logo items not available through Tesco. I also feel the shoe range could be more comprehensive
Alizzle · 21/07/2018 14:12
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I got the majority that I needed. I didn't buy a jumper or shoes but I got shorts trousers, polo tops and pe t shirts. I'd probably usually spend a bit more to get extras to save washing mid week
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed? It was really well stocked. I usually leave it last minute so usually struggle to get sizes but they had all that I wanted in the size I needed.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
He usually grows out of uniform before it gets worn out. Sometimes white polos get grubby but nothing a soak in vanish doesn't cure.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I spoke to the lady at the checkout but only in passing. I didn't ask any questions but she commended me on getting in early.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
I love that trousers and shorts have adjustable waists. We'd struggle for sizing if they didn't as he has skinny long legs. We usually buy tesco uniform so I wasn't surprised about the quality and comfort. I had no grumbles from d's at all.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I always find tesco uniform better quality than even other supermarkets so I always get it from Tesco. I would definitely buy again and will be for the new term in Sept.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I could not get everything i needed for £20 but i did manage to get a few basics,my child has logo school jumpers that i can only buy from school,i would normally spend around £80 for full uniform.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

At this time of year i dont think they do have lots of range available ,however i know they normally do in summer holidays and have plenty different sizes but unfortunately when i was given the voucher there were not many sizes available.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
I would expect them to last at least half the school year,i think they look good quality and i have washed polo shirts and they have washed well.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
Yes i did talk to staff to ask about different sizes that i needed ,they were helpful and told me that full range of uniform would be available in last week july.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes it did fit well and it was comfortable.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I think the quality is the same as asda and better than sainsburys,i would buy it again.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I could have bought all elements of the uniform but not enough to have several sets to enable washing. I don't know how much I would usually spend on "back to school" as I don't typically buy everything all at once over the summer, I just replace uniform when my daughter grows out of it.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No. Very little uniform at all. I couldn't get any summer uniform and had to make do with odd bits of winter uniform in sizes too big.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I would expect my daughter to grow out of them rather than need to replace them due to quality.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

No. Very few staff around and those that were didn't look like they had time to stop and talk about uniforms

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Hard to know as I could only get bigger sizes and winter uniform - not ideal for this current weather.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

Looks similar to other supermarkets. I was disappointed that the cardigans weren't 100% cotton though as Sainsbury's and Asda are. Also the royal blue colour seemed a slightly garish shade of blue compared to other brands. I would buy F&F uniform again if I saw something suitable but based on what I've seen I wouldn't expect there to be uniform that met my requirements.

gruber · 21/07/2018 15:40
  • I got 2 polo tops, 2 pairs of shorts and a packet of socks. I wanted 2 jumpers but they weren’t in stock yet, so got 2 pairs of trousers instead. I think I could have got everything for £20 if the jumpers had been in. I would normally spend £20-25 for one child (excluding shoes)
  • Yes, there was a good range in store. Had a choice of styles of shorts and trousers. Pity no jumpers in yet as I would have liked to try those. However I got everything in the correct size.
  • I expect the shorts to last next to next summer (a few weeks wear in Sept then hopefully will still fit next year). Trousers same - should last till next sept. However I will probably need to get new shirts for next summer as they have suncream stains already. To be fair it is white polo shirts and we have been using a lot of suncream, but I didn’t expect them to stain within 2 weeks.

-Yes, asked staff about availability of jumpers, and they said they didn’t have them in yet due to warm weather.

-Yes, uniform was comfortable and my son enjoyed playing in them. Shorts are nice and loose - not too tight.

  • I haven’t bought any other brand stuff as son is only in first year of school. I would buy it again. Although disappointed the shirts stained they were cheap at £3 for 2 short sleeved polo tops so it wouldn’t be a big outlay.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
Yes but my child’s school use badged shirts and jumpers that must be worn so I only needed skirts/trousers/pe shorts.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
The size range was good but I found most things sold out in the size I needed so had to size up.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Probably by the end of next term. I wash everything weekly and find all clothes look wash worn after a few months.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I tried but couldn’t find anyone that wasn’t serving customers.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes and yes. My child seemed happy and comfortable.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I usually buy uniform in Sainsbury’s because they seem slimmer fitting for my slim child but the elastic and buttons in the Tesco waistband meant this wasn’t a problem. I’d definitely buy again if they stocked more in grey bottoms/dresses!
KellylMetcalf · 21/07/2018 17:23
  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
No, I couldn’t get everything for £20. I managed to buy two packs of polo tops and two skirts for this amount. I would then normally get her school shoes and socks. The rest has to be bought from the uniform shop. I would normally spend around £40.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
The range in the store I visited was quite large. I managed to get everything I went in for. Although this is the only time that has been the case!
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
I normally need to replace shoes during the year although tops and skirts last the whole school year.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I didn’t speak to a member of staff
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
The uniform all fitted great and my daughter said it was super comfy.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I normally buy from Tesco as I find it the best. I buy their uniform from Tesco every year.

Thanks for the opportunity. Who doesn't like a gift card turning up in the post?

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Had the full selection been available in my Tesco Extra store, I do think I could've got a core uniform for DD with the £20.
I did get a good mix of things, though: couple of skirts to try out the new material, summer dresses, tights, socks to go with the dresses and white polo shirts for PE (no blue ones in stock for every day uniform).

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Unfortunately the variety wasn't what I expected at my local store, but the items which were in stock, were available in DD's size.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

Given that I've sized up as I usually do, I think they will all last a good while!

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

Only to ask if there were any other items in stock, but was told that all stock was out unfortunately. No mention about the new improved school uniform or anything like that.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes and she particularly enjoyed wearing the summer dresses.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I think the quality is comparable to the more expensive uniform I've bought from another store in the past, so I don't see why not. The main thing I look for is if I can get away with not ironing uniform and if they wash well, as I chuck them in the machines several times a week. No complaints on those fronts so I'm happy.
Thanks again!

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

If all the items needed would have been available in the right size/colour then yes it would have been enough.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Sadly not, I went to 3 different Tescos, and none had the right colour (light blue) or size (7-8)

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

We bought some socks with a blue trimming, I expect them to last her the whole year.

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

They tried to help, but couldn’t really get us the right items in the right size.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Considering we could only find some socks, yes the fit was good and she was happy to wear them.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

It was lacking in stock available but from what I could see they seem to be of good quality.

Thanks again for the opportunity

joleyn · 21/07/2018 18:56

I bought 4 pairs of trousers and 2 shirts. I like to have lots of trousers as my d's seems particularly dirty. I would probably normally spend £40.
There was quite a good range in store but I would like to have bought shorts and they had none in the correct size.
I don't think I will need to replace the items until my ds grows out of them. They seem to be of good quality, I especially like the reinforced knees on the trousers.
No I didn't talk to any staff about the uniform range.
The trousers fit well. My ds is tall and skinny and I did need to adjust the waist quite a lot but my d's said they were comfortable. He had no problems playing in it.
I think the fit and quality was better than other brands i have bought in the past. They washed well and I think will last til he grows out of them.

mummyofcutetwo · 21/07/2018 19:39

- Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

Even if I’d been able to get the uniform I’d have wanted at the time £20 wouldn’t have been enough. I ended spending more than £20 anyway and all I bought was two pairs of 8-9 boys’ shorts and two pairs of 15-16 boys’ trousers. I try to keep things as cheap as possible when it comes to school uniform, but it tends to come to £40-50 per child, not including shoes. Please note, I only buy Clark’s shoes for my younger son (my elder son’s feet are too big for Clark’s children’s shoes).

- Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

The range was dreadful, to be honest. Half of it looked as if it had been on the floor, everything was mixed up so it wasn’t easy to see what was available or if it was in the right size. The area was tiny and looked far more chaotic than the sale section. I’m not convinced that it was the new stock at all - it was as if the store had put out what was left over from last year to get rid. The uniform wasn’t as cheap as I’d remembered either. My younger son would normally be in age 7-8 but they didn’t have anything so I bought the 8-9 and pulled the adjustable waist right in.

- Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

The shorts have bobbled already, and my younger son isn’t a messy or rough-and-tumble sort of child. I can’t afford to replace uniform until it’s either too small or threadbare, so I might not be replacing too soon. Having said that, when it comes to the end of the summer holidays I’ll probably get new ones as I don’t want him to look scruffy from day 1!

- Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

I found someone and asked if they had anything else in stock and was told all they had was out on the racks.

- Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

It fit well and the children were comfortable. The fabric’s pretty thin so even my elder son (who had to wear long trousers for the product test) didn’t overheat. I’m not sure whether they’ll be warm enough for winter though, on that basis.

- How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

If these items weren’t the new stock I’d definitely give the new stock a go. On this experience, though, I’d probably buy from Tesco in the Summer term when you just need the uniform to last a matter of weeks, and when it’s warm.

Thismummyruns · 21/07/2018 19:46

My local store didn’t have a full range that I expected and sizes were limited so I had to make 2 trips in different stores for uniform & sizes required however for what I was able to buy, I bought a few packs of girls polo tops, 2 red cardigans and a lovely gingham summer dress. I have probably spent £50+ in the past not including shoes so what I was able to buy was great value. I wasn’t able to discuss with any staff about the range unfortunately as no staff were around in the first store I went into but it was 8am and there tends not to be at that time.

I think the items bought will last quite a while, they have washed so well, still look ‘fresh’ and do not look well worn even after 2 weeks of repeated wear and washing.
The uniform did fit well and my daughter seemed happy enough when I asked if she was comfortable. I think she loved the dress the most, it was nice and cool for her on the hot days we’ve had. She found it very easy to get on and off herself as it has a really useful front zip.
The one thing I would say is we had to buy age 6-7 & 7-8 in the tops as the 5-6’s were so small! She is tall for a 5 year old but I wasn’t expecting the 5-6 sizes to be so small.

I would 100% buy F&F school uniform again, it’s great value for money and has worn well so far. For me clothing has to wear well, be practical and comfortable but equally as important, must wash well. The items we have tried have ticked all these boxes and I already plan on finding a store near me that stocks the reinforced school trousers ready for the colder weather. Hopefully we can get a few grey pairs!

Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

If the stock had been there then yes, except shoes, which I would usually buy separately anyway. Probably usually around £20 per child excluding shoes.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
No and no. I could only get white polo shirts and socks for my 5-year-old and I really wanted blue polo shirts as well, navy cardigans and navy skirts. I would also have bought blue summer dresses or play suits but there were not any in the right size/colour combination.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
The polo shirts I bought are better quality than the Aldi ones I have also bought (in blue!) and were not much more money so I hope they will last longer but the white does tend to stain easily so I don’t really know yet.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I did not.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
It was on the large side compared to others but seems comfortable enough.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I usually buy Sainsburys cardigans and skirts/dresses, which are good quality but I can’t compare to Tesco as I was unable to buy those items. I find aldi uniform very cheap but doesn’t last long, however I will continue to buy their polo shirts because the blue stains less easily than white. I probably wouldn’t buy Tesco uniform again as I travelled to a large extra store specifically for this and was very disappointed by the range.
lucyrobinson · 21/07/2018 22:18

Could you get everything you needed for £20?
I managed to buy 4 t shirts and trousers.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I’d normally spend between £50-£60.

  • Was there a good range available in store?
The range was quite small. Could you get the specific size items you needed? The shop had a good range of sizes.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
Unless my son makes holes in the knees or gets whiteboard marker on his t shirts. The only time I’d replace them is when he grows out of them.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
I didn’t see a member of staff.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
It was a good fit and my son thought it was comfortable.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
I normally buy uniform from Marks and Spencer’s I think it compared well and I would purchase it again.
katiewalters · 22/07/2018 02:43

Could you get everything you needed for £20?
No. My daughter is 5, but tall so wears bigger than the age she is. So with £20 I only could get 2 items.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
Around £50. This doesn't include school shoes.

  • Was there a good range available in store?
Yes, there was more than I expected, and items such as pe bags, book bags, as well as the various school uniform.

Could you get the specific size items you needed?
Yes they did the sizes I would normally get.

Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
3-4months, roughly.

Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No, purchase made online.

Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Size was great, fit my daughter well, bit of room as well, so she won't grow out of it too quick. it was very comfortable for her to wear, play in and run around in.

How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Only thing I found to be not as good as other places I've bought uniform from is the colour. The uniform is purple, and the one cardigan I got, the scalloped edge one, the purple wasn't as bright as expected, compared to other cardigans the same as that one from elsewhere. It looked faded, as if it had been washed a few times already, and lost the colour. Can imagine it to look worse when washed a few times

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

No, my child is only 6 but is going into size 9-10 so the prices were higher. I would normally expect to get at least 2 of everything (eg 2 packs of 2 x trousers). I would therefore probably spend about £40-£50 not including logo jumpers

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

No, stock was very limited. I managed to find a couple of items in his size that I might otherwise not have bought.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I’m not convinced they seem that hard wearing...maybe 6 months?

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

I didn’t see anyone around at all

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

Yes it did seem to fit well.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I’m not sure I would in all honesty. I am happy to buy supermarket brand uniform as well as the but I find the quality/texture of the material doesn’t feel up to scratch. I find the Sainsbury’s range better for example.

MummyBtothree · 22/07/2018 13:09
  1. No I couldn't get everything I needed. I purchased two packs of ×2 polo shirts, 2 sweatshirts, a pack of ×2 PE t-shirts & a ×2 pack of black PE shorts. I put approximately £3 towards it and was not able to purchase either trousers or shorts due to low or no stock levels.
  2. No there wasn't a good range of stock and stock levels were very low. Luckily the sweatshirts available were red and royal blue which luckily are the colours for my son's school but any other local school would have drawn a blank.
  3. If I'm honest I'm not expecting the polo shirts or sweatshirts to last as long as the Asda ones I usually purchase as just after one wash they seemed to have shrunk (and they were line dried!).
  4. I didn't speak to any staff because I wasn't able to find any staff other than the ones on the checkouts.
  5. Yes the uniform fit was good and seemed to be comfortable for my son.
  6. The range available and the stock levels were shockingly bad compared to Asda where I usually buy my son's uniform from and doesn't wash well, even when washed according to the labels. I don't expect clothes to shrink like that after just one wash!.

- Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I would normally spend more than £20 so no, I couldn't get everything I needed although I do feel the items were good value. I tend to buy duplicates so that I don't have to wash as frequently.

- Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
There was a very small range in store. I felt very fortunate to be able to find the exact sizes and items we needed as there was such limited availability and choice

- Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
I expect the dresses to last for two summers unless my daughter has a MASSIVE growth spurt as I bought them a bit big. The material appears durable and has washed well. The socks and skirt should also last for as long as they fit her.

- Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No, it wasn't necessary.

- Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
Yes - the dresses looked lovely and my daughter stated that they were comfortable. The skirt has an adjustable waist which is ideal as she is so slim.

- How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
The summer dresses appear to be of a much better quality than the ones I've previously bought from George - thicker more durable material. I have previously bought uniform from Tesco and always been impressed. The additional items bought this time around so far seem to be of equally good quality for the price. I have several Tesco stores close by so it is very convenient for me and I am highly likely to purchase from them again.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?
I could probably get one full uniform for £20 not including shoes. But I would usually buy a few sets to get us through the week without constantly washing them. I'd normally spend about £40 per child plus school shoes.
  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?
No. Very limited supply of clothes. I managed to buy a jumper and a skirt in my child's size. All appeared to be left overs of the previous years clothing range.
  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?
The pleated skirt (with permanent pleats) has almost lost all of its pleats. The jumper has washed well, still plenty of colour and in good condition. I will have to replace the skirt before September because it looks pretty bad, the jumper could lady the school year.
  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?
No I didn't.
  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?
My child said she felt comfortable in both items and happy to run and play as usual.
  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
If they stocked more of a range then yes. Other supermarket uniforms seem similar for this price and I haven't tried non-supermarket brands.

  • Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I wouldn't be able to buy everything I needed for £20. Sadly, my children all attend schools where polos and jumpers require an embroidered logo. I bought this via the Tesco embroidery service but obviously, it is not available in store! Having added it up, I am actually quite horrified to realise it is probably at least £100 a child, including shoes and all the embroidered stuff, book bags and PE bags too. I do buy at least three sets as I work full time and can't get everything washed and dried again as quickly as I would like, but this does seem quite expensive, for a state school.

  • Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

Yes, I was a bit worried when I saw the difficulties others were having but I was pleasantly surprised. I bought trousers, shirts, one skirt, plimsolls and school shoes (obviously not all covered by the £20 voucher sadly) but these were all available in the sizes that I needed.

  • Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these?

I am hoping they will last around a year, I find most uniform tends to be outgrown before it needs to be replaced. I am keen to see how the trousers wear long term as, when I compared them to last year's Asda pair, they do feel thicker. The shirts seem fine and they never seem to pick up as much wear as trousers. The shoes look good quality but it will be interesting to see if they last DD a whole school year, she is quite tough on clothes and shoes!
Comparing the Tesco school skirt to one purchased at three times the price at an independent supplier it actually compares really favourably! The material seems much thicker and the skirt just seems to be better put together in general.
Not purchased in the test but I am also really keen to see how the embroidered jumpers stand up this year. Last year's look pretty shabby, far worse than those purchased at the previous supplier!

  • Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range?

I didn't speak to any members of staff.

  • Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in?

The trousers were a good fit, DS is very tall and slim so it can be difficult to find trousers that will stay up. The adjustable waists are essential and I wouldn't buy uniform without them.
No complaints about the fit of the shoes or the skirt either, DD seems very happy with them.

  • How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I think I must have bought school uniform from pretty much everywhere, I do find the supermarkets fairly similar in quality, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis slightly nicer and priced to match. I would buy from Tesco again, mainly for the convenience of being able to buy everything at once (online) and I am pleased with the fit and quality of the items that I bought as part of the product test so far.

Thank you very much for picking us to participate.
