This is the feedback thread for Mumsnetters with children aged 5-10 who tested out the Tesco F&F school uniform range. Each tester was given a £20 Tesco voucher to go into store and buy uniform for their 5-10 year olds and have been testing out the uniform the last few weeks.

Here’s what Tesco F&F has to say: “Tesco uniforms are our best uniforms yet and with features such as reinforced knees on trousers, As-New technology, Teflon coating (eco-friendly) and much more, we’re confident that they will last and last and last.”

• Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

No, but I would typically buy quite a bit so I can get it washed. Shoes were bought separately as well. The 'basics' are doable at this price, for young children, but probably not for secondary or upper primary as it seemed to increase there a bit.

• Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

There was quite a few different options, but not in all sizes and I wasn't able to buy the right amount of trousers in the right size.

I hope they will last a school year. Maybe a little less.

No I didn't.

Yes, mostly. My daughter is a bit long and skinny so it wasn't a perfect fit, but most clothes aren't. She was comfortable and happy to wear them.

• How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality, having previously gone for M&S or JL. I think JL are a slightly better fit for her personally, but Tesco was much lower cost, so I would definitely consider buying there in future.

• Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I managed to buy a basic set of uniform essentials for £20 - however with a boy I needed a set of everything for every day of the week to avoid mid week washing drama as a full time working mum!

• Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

I made my purchase online and found there to be a good range.

Possibly during the year but as the price was good I could in theory purchase more sets to save on replacing items.

The uniform fit well and my child found it to be comfortable.

The quality is slightly less than competitors but then again so was the price. Overall decent quality for a reasonable price.

Unfortunately not, as my daughter is 10. The prices are a bit higher so I was unable to get a full uniform

1 - Could you get everything you needed for £20? How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child?

I couldn’t spend the full £20 as there was very limited stock in age 7-8. I wanted red polo shirts, white polo shirts. red jumper, and grey shorts. I could only get white polo shirts

I’d usually spend around £50 which would get 5 jumpers, 5 polo shirts, 3 trousers & 2 pairs of shorts

No, the availability was terrible. Staff checked the stockroom for me but were unable to order items in which is disappointing

Polo shirts already need replacing as covered in grass stains, pen and pasta sauce. They also shrunk in the wash on 40c

Couldn’t get shorts or jumpers to test so cannot comment

Trousers were only in 8-9 so unable to comment as they were too big

They checked th stockroom which was helpful but didn’t mention the new range

Ds was happy to wear it, polo shirts seemed wide

I wouldn’t buy again. Polo shirts already need replacing as stained and shrunk

I wouldn’t buy uniform without the facility to order in as availability was an issue in sizes and colours

I usually buy enough for a clean item every day, so 5 trousers, 5 shirts, 5 jumpers. So I couldn't get everything I needed, but really happy with what I could get for £20.

Particularly impressed with the slim fit trousers. Great quality fabric and re-enforced knees. I think these will last a while, even with two special needs children!

No I didn't

I usually buy uniform from M&S. I think your trousers are MUCH BETTER. I will continue to buy jumpers from Tesco too. But I will be buying shirts from M&S as they have an easy dressing section where the shirts fasten with Velcro, which is much easier for my sons.

Overall very impressed with the quality of Tesco uniform and it's priced well enough that it's not too expensive to replace.

I got most things, jumpers are bought from school, there were no plimsolls in the size I needed.

I definitely will - paint and bolognese stains came straight out of the polo shirts and I thought these were excellent value for money!

Everything was reasonably priced and seemed durable except the matching hair accessories which seemed disproportionately expensive. Would normally spend about £25 on dresses plus about £10 on polo shirts, £5 on socks, £10 on tights. My DTs prefer the logoed school cardigans and jumpers.

Everything was crammed into a small area and it was really hard to see what there was. I really struggled with sizes. I have one small twin and one tall one so was looking for 4-5 and 5-6 and couldn’t get polo shirts or school skirts in that size. There weren’t any black skirts or dresses either - only trousers.

I bought the summer playsuits so they’d be able to wear them now and they’ve washed well. They don’t need ironing at all, so assume they’d last as long as they fit.

No

Yes, but both girls complained that they found it hard to get off their shoulders to go to the loo - maybe the zip should finish a bit lower down?

Good, and yes - the summer dress material is great - didn’t crinkle like some, and required no ironing at all.

No I couldn't get everything I would normally need. I'd normally spend around £100+ for one child including pe kit.

• Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed?

There wasn't a good range available in the store I visited. Had to buy long sleeve shirts for my son a they only had short sleeve blouses or polo shirts.
Trousers and shorts were very limited sizes but I went up a size in the trousers just so we could try them out.

I think the trousers will last until they are outgrown, they seem very well made compared to the other supermarket brand uniform I tend to buy. The shirts have a good thickness to them so again I think will last until outgrown or discoloured.

No, there wasn't any staff around near the clothing section.

Yes the uniform did fit well, the trousers were adjusted in the waistband as they were a size up but they were slim fit which was perfect for my son.
He said it was all very comfortable.

The material feels more sturdy and thicker than other uniform I have bought in the past. My main problem is bobbling on trousers and the hems coming undone on the trousers but these feel like they will last.

I could only purchase 2x packs of polo shirts and 1x jumper in DS's size. I spent £9 I believe. I don't think I would be able to get everything for 20.

• Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed? No. As above, only polo shirts and 1 jumper! Not sure about trousers as I don't need to buy any for next year.

• Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these? When DS outgrown them or they start looking tatty. Current trousers and jumpers were from Tesco and have been in use all year. Polo shirts were replaced after Easter due to growth.

We do however shop in Tesco weekly and I have a Tesco credit card so that also influenced my decision. Why don't you have navy (non sports) shorts? I has to order those from Asda online! Also, Asda do a 5 pack of polo shirts which was handy.

Not the best test to be honest guys. Barely any stock, and seems a waste. I have money left on the gift card so wondering whether to put it towards my weekly shop now!

I could get adequate stuff for £20; that included a sports style top, plus trousers and 2 shirts.
I would normally spend either Aldi style £12 or John Lewis, more like £30.

I was ina Tesco Extra. Not all varieties were in stock and it was not wonderfully laid out. The hangers were bunched up. I found it bewildering, with pleats, without, skinny leg, wide etc. Would have liked a diagram with all the various potential options laid out. Not everything was there, but it is a funny time of year to be buying uniform, I guess. I found a combination that worked, but had ti give up seeking pleated.

I think these would last at least anyear. Seem pretty strong.

No, never see anyone on the shop floor in this store. I didnt need extra advice.

Fits really nicely. The trousers are a little long in leg, but DS is short. Still fine and should last as he grows a little. He was bery concerned about being able to crouch down in the trousers. Found he could well enoughwhich is better than other brands. Reinforced knees are very good and he feels confident to play in them. He likes them. Usually moans about not being able to wear track suit style ‘soft’ trousers, as he calls them, The shirt was nicely fitted and has been nice and cool in these hot days. Sports top fine, good shape to it.

• How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?

I like the bariosu suts of the trousers and the fact ne can choose. Fashion is about the narcissism of small differences and this has met them, Older DD was so impressed I had to go back and get some for her, the boys’ ones actually. I would definitely look here again. I like the eco claims and, while more expenseive than some, see to be long lasting and well made.

1. I did get everything I needed for the £20 - we already had school jumpers and shorts that had plenty of wear in them so I got socks, white polo shirts, and a pair of trousers for Autumn.
2. As it was quite early in the 'Uniform-buying season' I had no problem getting the sizes I needed.
3. The quality looked good, comparable to the Sainsbury's range I usually buy and I predict it will last the majority of the school year (September-July).
4. I didn't speak to staff as I found it all easily so there was no need.
5. Yes, my son seemed happy with them, particularly the socks as he prefers a looser fit which these were.
6. I found it comparable to Sainsbury's range in terms of quality/price so I probably wouldn't buy it again purely because we live 5 minutes from Sainsburys but had to drive much further to get to a Tesco big enough to have clothes. But they were good value for money.

Pretty much yes, with the weather at the moment I didn't need to buy any sweatshirts, but £20 got us a pack of tshirts, shorts, socks and some trousers. I thought this was excellent value. I would usually spend £30 approximately, not including shoes.

Surprisingly yes! There was a good range and I could get the exact size we needed. In fact I may start doing the back to school shop before the summer holidays in future, when all the sizes have ran out.

6-12 months. We always try to get a year's wear out of uniform. Having boys I do always find the knees get holes in by about the 6 month mark, but I will be interested to see how these reinforced knees last.

I didnt, but I was in a bit of a rush and my 1 year old wasnt too happy in the trolley, so didnt purposefully didnt engage in any conversations.

It fit fairly well. My little one is tall and skinny so we are used to not finding perfect fitting uniform, the slim fit is always better but its not always easy to get hold of.

I find supermarket brands all fairly similar in terms of quality and how well it wears. So far it still looks great, but its only been a weeks worth of wear. I will be interested to see how it compares later in the year. I probably would buy it again, but being very honest it usually comes down to which store has the correct colour and size in at the time when we need it, so cant always be too fussy. Thank you for the voucher, it was much appreciated and my little boy felt very special wearing brand new uniform for his last week of school.

I couldn’t as some of the school uniform is logoed, although I would struggle to get even the uniform that isn’t logoed for £20. We like to have more than one pair of trousers at least, socks, PE shorts and trousers, shoes & trainers. I probably spend at least £100 the vast majority on his shoes.

There wasn’t a great range in the first store I went to, we had to go to a bigger store to find a range of uniform. Sizes were ok, although DS is skinny.

By September, DS doesn’t like the feel of the trousers at all. Nor do I tbh.

The slim fit trousers had a good fit for DS but he was not happy to wear them.

The feel of the trousers were very similar to the Lidl uniform, which we didn’t buy because of the feel. We have always bought M&S uniform and I don’t think that will change based on this.

• The range was ok, we really wanted the dark green polo shirts but they weren’t available in store so we bought white instead. I also hoped to buy jumpers but there were only sweatshirts. The sizes we needed were available in everything.

• The quality looks good I would expect them to last the school year, maybe longer.

• I didn’t talk to any members of staff, if there had been someone around I might have asked about whether they would be stocking the green polo shirts but I assumed if they were in stock they’d be in the shelves.

• The uniform fitted well. The trousers were a great length and the adjustable waist band on the trousers is perfect as my son is very skinny and it’s hard to find trousers to fit well! The sweatshirts feel nice and soft.

• I’ve bought uniform from Asda and Sainsbury’s in the past and I would say they are all of very similar quality and price. I would say the trousers from Tesco feel a bit more hard wearing than the ones we bought last year from Asda that now have holes in the knees!

I wouldn’t be able to get everything for £20. I also tend to buy extra to avoid mid week wash. I was able to buy some of the basics. However, still don’t think £20 is enough for everything.

The store I went to didn’t have a good range and whatever they had I struggled to find my daughters size.

I found the quality not as good as other brands but is a lot cheaper. I would still consider buying if there is variety as I like one stop shop.

If there had been stock in store then I would have been able to buy a complete outfit (e.g. shorts or trousers, polo shirt, socks, jumper)

No, not at all, very poor choice in two superstores. I ended up buying two double packs of polo shirts, football shorts, and two packs of multi socks. No trousers or shorts in the correct colour/size combo and no jumpers in school colours.

Shirts washed very well, any stains came out. No distortion to size or fit. The football shorts fit well too. Sock are fine. I expect everything should make it through 2018/19 school year.

I did ask about additional colours/sizes and was told it was end of season so not much stock left or space given to uniforms.

Yes to both.

How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Comparable to Asda/George but sizing is a bit bigger, which I like. I think for younger ages the trousers should have snaps at the waist to make it easier for them to get them off in emergency situations! Next has this on their shorts and it is really useful.

How much would you normally spend on the ‘back-to-school’ shop for one child? I would expect to spend £50-70 as there are school-specific items to buy

• Was there a good range available in store? Could you get the specific size items you needed? No I was only able to spend £3 on a twinpack of shirts as that was all that was available in his size. I would have bought more shirts if they were available and some shorts but there were none in his size. There was a very limited selection given the size of the store - only two stands and it wasn't possible to buy online due to Tesco Direct closing.
• Based on the quality of uniform pieces you’ve bought, when do you expect you’ll next have to replace these? He wore the two shirts three times each and despite using vanish suncream stains and pen stains haven't come out but the shirts weren't specifically labelled as being stain resistant. Once he's wearing jumpers in the autumn/winter the stains don't matter too much but any more black pen and they'd need replacing.
• Did you talk to any store staff about the back to school range and were they helpful and knowledgeable about the range? Ha ha ha there were no staff anywhere near to ask and never are.
• Did the uniform fit well? Was it comfortable for your child to wear and play in? I had intended to buy 6-7 shirts but as these weren't available I bought 5-6 which is his current size and they were quite large on my skinny boy. He managed the buttons well apart from the top one.
• How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again? I might do towards the end of the year if things needed replacing. I usually buy M&S shirts and they dealt with stains very well until the suncream hit in the summer. There were some girls' trousers that I looked at that were horrible very nasty thin material. The shirts feel durable and were easy to iron. Whilst I'm here I do wonder though how two shirts can cost £3 it's very cheap maybe too cheap. Also there was a lot of plastic inside the packaging.

No not all. I think I probably could have got one set of everything so just the very basics, but usually I buy as much as possible in one go. Usual "back to school spend" would be approx £60-£80 but this would include embroidered school tops and jumpers/cardigans which need to be bought from a separate provider (annoyingly!).

No. The range as abysmal. There was barely anything, which I was surprised at because I deliberately went out of my way to go to a Tesco Extra thinking they would have a bigger range!

This was one of the real strengths of the items I bought (skirts and trousers), they seem to be good quality and have washed and worn well over the fortnight. I have high hopes that they will be grown out of before they start to fall apart.

I did ask to see if this was all they had uniform wise and was told "it's just the time of year, come back a bit closer to the new school year". Which was not helpful really.

The fit was great and apparently very comfortable.

I liked the quality, I was surprised at how good it was compared to my expectation of a supermarket brand - I have bought from ASDA before where the quality was nowhere near as good, but the very cheap price reflects that. I do think for the perception I have of the Tesco brand as a supermarket clothing range it was on the pricier side. On the whole I find the entire Florence & Fred range to be expensive for a supermarket. That said I think I would buy it again because the quality was not too far off M&S but the prices are better. If I do buy it again it will be online though as it's not worth me going out of my way when there isn't a guarantee of having what I need in store.

No but that's because I buy 5 uniforms for each child. However i did find it fairly cheap so that was a bonus.

I originally went online to buy but didn't realise they had stopped selling stuff online which is a massive shame as usually as I wouldn't need to worry about it not being in stock. In-store unfortunately there wasn't enough stuff left. Either the size wasn't available or I could only buy one of some items. It was hassle as I have to go back again as my nearest Tesco isn't close.

The clothes look fine and have washed well but I would expect everything to last one year. The jumpers and trousers look decent quality. However I think I may need to replace the polo tops sooner. They just seem a bit thin and I wash them daily as the kids always have some food/ paint etc down them.

No didn't talk to any staff about it. I did do some other shopping and needed to speak to a member of staff but struggled to find anyone so think I would have struggled to find anyone to speak to about uniform.

Yes the uniform fitted ok. I did find the jumpers a baggy but that may be because my kids are a little on the slim side!

How did the Tesco F&F uniform compare to other brands you’ve bought school uniform from in the past? Would you buy it again?
Overall, I was very pleased with the uniform and the price too. The materials were softy and the kids said it was comfy. Also, I found the clothes for well and the quality was very good. I have bought uniform from Asda before and I would say it's quite similar in quality.
I would very happily buy uniform from Tesco however I don't think I will in the future and the only reason being is that I can't buy it online which is a massive shame. I can't afford to keep trekking back and forth to Tesco to see if my child's size is in yet or if there wasn't enough in stock.

I got everything I needed which was trouser, shirts and polo shirts. The range was small but attractive to us. Not as much choice as some retailers but what was there was good. I didn't find shirts in the size I needed but asked a staff member who got us more. The for is perfect. I struggle to find shirts which fasten at the neck for my son as these were fabulous! Hopefully they will last the year although my Son is very heavy on the knees in trousers so this is doubtful! I'd definitely buy this again and tell other mums too. The. Price and fit is good for us so weRe happy.

Its is hard to answer this as when i went to my large local store there was hardly any uniform. I could probably kit my dd(5) out in a full uniform except shoes for £20 but when i went to buy things there was next to nothing in her size

No not at all. I had intended to do the trial for ds1 (10) as he is the child out of my three who are school age who destroys clothes. But choice was very limited and i struggled to spend the £20 over all three children

I bought a two pack of pe shorts (boys) and the stitching was loose after a week so they wont do for september even.

I had been keen to try the polo shirts but at the time when you wanted us to buy there were none in stock in any of my dcs sizes. I find polos always shrink a lot and wanted to see if Tescos were different

I was very annoyed to go into the same tesco store again this week and see they had full new range of uniform out! It seems this trial was badly timed as a lot of people seemed to only get old stock! I would love to try the actual new stuff

I got the 2 xtrousers and 2 x shirts for my son but shoes were more expensive. I would normally spend about £60 As require logo jumpers and t shirts

No, but I wouldn't expect to. I got two skirts and 4 polo shirts. I usually spend around £40-50 not including shoes.

No and no! None of my local Tesco stores stock uniform so I had to drive 25 miles to get to a store as they didn't have anything online. When I got there they didn't have what I wanted and had barely anything in my daughter's size.

Quality seems ok, haven't washed anything yet as it's been far too hot for winter uniform and they didn't have any Summer dresses. I'm hoping they'll last for the next school year.

Yes. It was generously sized, I ended up buying a size smaller than usual and it's still too big.

It's cheaper than M&S and John Lewis, similar prices to the other supermarkets. The quality seems ok but poor selection and availability means I wouldn't go out of my way again. Far easier to go online on M&S etc and order everything to be delivered to the door.

I only got part of what I needed for £20. I got a skirt a dress and two packs of polo shirts.
I would probably spend around £50 not including shoes. That includes branded school cardigans though.

I found the range to be limited with not much choice or sizes available. I am not sure if I purchased old stock as the items were quite crumpled.

The dress and skirt appear to be of good quality washed well and will hopefully last until outgrown.
The polo shirts shrunk in the wash and yellowed a little so I would probably need to replace after a term.

No I didn't talk to any staff.

The uniform fitted well and my daughter liked them .She found them comfortable.

I usually buy from Asda or Sainsbury's.
I found there to be much less choice at Tesco. I think the range had not been launched properly in all stores in time for the product test and I may have purchased last years stock. I will probably visit Tesco again in a few weeks to see what else they have.
I would purchase the dresses and skirts again but not the polo shirts.
