This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested an item of school uniform from the Matalan Teflon Stain Resistant Range.

Here’s what Matalan say “Our Teflon stain resistant coating is designed to repel water and stains, restricting stains from absorbing into the fabric. We know kids will be kids and we want to help you keep them looking smart for school and make sure their school uniform lasts.”

I knew Matalan were doing school uniforms, however it was rather difficult to find any of the Teflon Stain Resistant Range in the right size for my DD. In the end I had to buy her a 6yr one which just about still fitted her, would have preferred to buy the next size up, but that wasn't available in the shop.
Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested? I was rather disappointed with it. We bought the trousers, but already after a days wear the trousers had bobbled. Now after two weeks of wear and three washes the bobbling has even become a lot worse. On the positive side, the trousers stayed stain free for most of the wear.

The fit was good, I liked the style and my DD did enjoy wearing them as they were comfy, but the material has really let the trousers down as we normally buy trousers of a similar price from a big supermarket and they are still almost as good as new (even after a previous wear by older sister).

No I was unaware they even sold uniforms.

The skirt was stylish and well fitting. My daughter was very pleased with it. She spontaneously came home saying I love this skirt.

It fit as well, was a more fashionable style and my daughter said it was comfortable.

I bought a skirt , it was a really nice soft fabric , a lovely "floaty" style - my daughter says it's great fro twirling in . There is a really pretty flower pattern , and the skirt has an adjustable waist band ,which is really handy , as it should last a while as the length is good .

The skirt matches the uniform we usually get , the skirt was probably a lot softer than other skirts , whichis good for my daughter , as she can be really sensitive and harsher fabrics can irritate and annoy her . The price was very good compared to our normal uniform purchases .

I had bought school uniform for my son last year from Matalan - along with other brands - however wasnt aware of the Teflon stain resistant range

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested? I tested grey school trousers for my 5 year old - the quality seemed pretty good and despite them being covered in paint and glue they have washed well

I have a very petite 5 year old little boy and I selected an age 4 - these were great in length and the elasticated adjustable waist stayed up all day. They seem to be god quality and the style was comfortable for him to wear. I usually end up in marks and spencer for school uniform but wasnt disappointed with these.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms? I would definitely consider Matalan for school uniform now - although I would like to see stain resistant polo shirts (sons school is pale blue) introduced. I have more problems with polo shirts than trousers really.

Yes, I've bought their school trousers previously and was pleased with their quality. I wasn't aware that they had a Teflon Stain-Resistant range but wasn't surprised by this.

Excellent pair of trousers. Great shape and fit on my six year old with enough room to grow into over the coming year. So far they have washed and dried well and only need a quick iron to get them ready to wear again.

It was just as good as my usual brand and better than a few pairs of trousers I have previously bought. I liked the metal fastener on the trousers and this was well sewn and will last. The flat front on the trousers looks great and I was pleased with the charcoal grey colour as this is my preferred shade for school trousers. They fit my son well and he finds them comfortabe.

I will definitely buy school trousers from there in future. We have logos on our shirts and sweatshirts so have to buy those from the uniform shop. I will be looking to buy pinafores for my daughter in the future too.

I absolutely would recommend parents try Matalan. Their prices are competitive and the range is very good.

Yes I was but wasn't aware of the Teflon Stain Resistant Range.

My 6yr old looked lovely in his cargo style trousers when he wore them on the Monday after we bought them, however when i picked him up from school on the Monday afternoon he had fallen over, cut his knee and ripped a big hole in his trousers! So that was the end of them!

These are the first trousers that he has ripped at school so compared to every pair of trousers he has had in the last 3 years not great! But they did look very smart and they were a really nice fit as my son is the height of a 6yr old but has a tiny waist.

Not likely unless they reinforced the knees a bit better

I didn't really get to test them out for very long, But he did look really smart in them and they did fit better than some trousers he has tried so for that reason I would recommend them.

i do already purchase bits of uniform from matalan- eg. polo shirts and tights, trousers but in terms of the teflon range i would deffo think to buy again

As i am new to this market i cant compare against many other brands. The fit was good for my DS, the style was good and he seemed comfortable in them.

I would consider Matalan though i would like to see a larger range.

Yes i would, the price and quality seems comparible to the supermarket brands.

Yes I was aware of the Matalan school uniform and the Teflon range, I don't normally buy from there though as I normally default to buying from the nearest supermarket.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
The trousers fitted well and looked smart, the material felt thick and hard wearing and looked as good value as the the ones that I normally buy.

Q3. How did the Matalan item of school uniform your child tested compare to the school uniform items you typically purchase? Please refer to fit, style, and comfort in your answer.
The trousers fit DS (11) well, he said they were comfortable (or I think he actually grunted 'they are fine mum!' Which is high praise from him). I was pleased to see that the age 13 ones still have the adjustable waist, DS is tall but very slim, so age 13 without adjustable waist swamp him.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?
I will definitely go to Matalan again in the future, they were good value for money and seem to be fairly hardy. They washed well and didn't need much ironing after washing. I would like to try the shirts too, the last ones that I bought from the local supermarket have been a bit rubbish, the collars went a bit lumpy after a couple of washes.

Yes I would definitely recommend to friends and family, in fact I was talking to SIL at the weekend about the trousers, for nephew who starts pre-school in September.
We have a Matalan less than a mile from our house, so I will be paying a visit more often!

No to both.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
Nice style, a few different styles of pinafore to choose from. The feel of the fabric was OK, but felt very slippery with the Teflon coating. DD liked it and she liked being given the chance to choose her own uniform. It washed well and pretty much didn't need ironing which was a bonus!

The pinafore was very roomy but not very long. DD is a slim build but tall and I think this was reflected. However, she liked the dress for running around in and it didn't come home stained at all so I think the stain resistance definitely worked.

I will probably use them again whenever I next need uniform as it was handy for everything (socks, tights etc.) and the stain resistant clothing is very handy.

Yes, because I know a few of my friends children need the stain resistance.

Q1. I knew Matalan did uniform, I've purchased it before. I didn't know about the Teflon though.
Q2. I struggled to find anything balck for a tall slim 12 year old. I ended up getting my SD a cute grey skirt with a slightly flippy hemline.
Q3. Fit: true to age. Style: nice but not trendy enough for older children. It washed well, dried quickly and didn't need ironing. Tweens/teens need uniform too. Comfort: nice and soft fabric, gentle waistband.
Q4. I would if they did more for my DDs. I think Matalan are more suitable for Primary uniforms than secondary.

1. I was aware Matalan sold school uniform but I wasn't aware of the stain resistant range.

1. My overall impression was very good and the prices are very reasonable.

1. We had already purchased several items of school uniform from Matalan before this trial and had the same skirt but in a smaller size. The older skirt has faded quite a bit. The new one hasn't but has only been washed twice so far. However, I have found all the school uniform we have (some has to be bought from the school with the emblem on) fades after a while. My daughter is very slim so we always need adjustable waists. Luckily the skirts have this and my daughter likes the style and finds them comfortable.

1. I am happy with the school uniform and would like to buy from Matalan again. However, I doubt we will because we got a parking fine for £50 rising to £85 if we don't pay within 14 days) when we went to collect our skirt. We were in Matalan's car park for less than 20 minutes and my husband was waiting in the car whilst my daughter and I went into the store. I have appealed and am waiting for the outcome. I have also contacted Matalan who have asked me to contact them again if my appeal is unsuccessful.

1. I would recommend Matalan's school uniform to others but I would warn them about the car park!

I knew Matalan sold uniform, but wasn't particularly aware of the Teflon Stain Resistant Range.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
I have been very impressed. The shorts are smart, they have worn well in the first couple of weeks and washed well. There don't seem to be any pen marks left on them after a wash - although this could be because DS is so proud of his new item of uniform (a garment not passed down through 2 older brothers) that he has kept those whiteboard pens away from them.

Definitely comparable - if not slightly better in terms of cut. Plenty of opportunity to tighten the elasticated waist. The sizes actually seem quite accurate for the age - although it is a little difficult to make that generalisation from one item of uniform. The grey is a little lighter than previous items, but still looks smart.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?
I would definitely consider Matalan as an option. In fact I was going to buy school t-shirts there, but the price was significantly higher that the store up the road. Unless Matalan can make whiteboard pen resistant white polo shirts I'm afraid I'll have to stick to the cheaper ones. My boys can wear blue or grey shorts and DS1 & 2 always want blue. Fortunately DS3 is far less fussy - but I couldn't find any blue items on sale from Matalan.

Yes I would recommend. It has exceeded my expectations and I think that the shorts were good value for money.

I was aware that Matalan sold school uniform but was not aware of any specific range.

Q2. What were your overall impressions of the Matalan item of school uniform you tested?
I am quite impressed with the trousers I have tested. On first washing them I thought they would need ironing as they appeared creased coming out of the machine, but after hanging them up to dry the creases dropped out and I have not had to iron them at all. I have deliberately let my son wear these as soon as they are ready so I can assess the material quality after numerous washes and at present they still appear as new.

I ended up buying the 'pull on trousers black' because this was the only pair in my son's size. The fit is well, needing no adjustment to waist or length. The trousers look smart and my son has not complained so I assume they are comfortable. They appear to be of equal quality to the uniform I usually buy.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?
I would consider Matalan for school uniform as the price and quality are reasonable but they would probably not be my first choice. I have tried go buy my teenager her uniform from there in the past but never found what she was looking for and when I went for this test purchase there was only a single pair of trousers in my son's size so I find Matalan's stock availability quite poor. I find it more convenient and cheaper to buy uniform from Tesco whilst doing my grocery shopping.

I would recommend the trousers I have tested as they appear to be standing up to the job and the price was reasonable, but I would recommend shopping for them when the uniforms are fully stocked.

Q1. Not aware that they sold uniform, hadn't been to a store for years as it wasn't local to me.
Q2. Fit was good but I thought that the material in the trousers was pretty thin in comparison to our usual Sainsburys/ John Lewis uniform trousers, so perhaps not that warm for winter wear.
Q3.Fit and comfort of the trousers was pretty similar to what we have already but I really didn't think they were very warm, (yes I'm obsessed with cosiness, as is my son!) Washed well although we've not had a chance to give them a good bashing, I'm not sure how well they'll last compared to our usual trousers.
Q4.summer uniform I'd consider as it was very reasonably priced and fitted well,.
Q5. Not really sure I'd recommend although it is well cut and priced, if it lasts a few months and still looks smart then I would recommend it.

Q1. I've only been in Matalan a couple of times before and I hadn't noticed the school uniform range before.

Q2. Overall I was pretty impressed by the trousers I bought, they appear to be washing well and were good value for a stain resistant type.

Q3. I was very happy to be able to get a plus size 14-15 for my DS age 13 who finds normal size trousers too tight on his thighs. However he found these a little too tight - he likes the comfort of looser trousers for playing football. He finds his normal M and S plus size more comfortable.

Q4. I would consider it depending on the styles available. My other son needs slim fit trousers.

I chose a skirt and it is much better that the one my daughter wears from school.
Me and my daughter found out that this skirt fits better, the material is lighter and softer and I found it to be effective against staining. It also washed very well.

Q4. In future, how likely are you to consider purchasing an item of school uniform from Matalan if you were in need of school uniforms?
I will certainly buy more school uniform items from Matalan as they are excellent value for money.

Q5. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend the Matalan item of school uniform you tested to friends/family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would recommend because I am very please with the quality and the price of Matalan's school uniform range.

DD chose the longer length wrap look skirt on the website, but I couldn't find it instore. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the skirt with the embroidered waistband in grey instore, whereas I could only find it listed in navy on the website, so I chose that.

Q1. I knew nothing about Matalan before this test.

Q2. I selected a larger size so that it will fit DD next year as well, thank goodness for the adjustable waistband! I'd have liked the fabric to be thicker. DD and I both love the embroidery detail, it makes it more girly.

Q3. The fit was good, maybe a bit short for age 10, the style was lovely, as pretty as you can make school uniform! The quality could be better.

Q4. Very unlikely, unless it was online, as it's a trek to get to from where we live.

Q5. Yes, because the pros outweigh the cons.

I bought school trousers for my 13 year old son. I thought they felt good quality and were well made. The fabric seemed much thicker than the usual brand I buy and the price was good for the quality.

Q3. How did the Matalan item of school uniform your child tested compare to the school uniform items you typically purchase? Please refer to fit, style, and comfort in your answer.
My son normally needs slim fitting trousers but they did not have any in his size so I opted for standard fit, hoping they might fit once adjusted. However, even with the adjustable waist, my son thought they felt too wide on him and not comfortable to wear. Perhaps, if he takes a growth spurt, they will fit him better.

I would definitely purchase school uniforms from Matalan again, as long as the slim fit was available.

Yes, I would recommend the item of school uniform. Although they did not fit my son, the trousers were of good quality at a reasonable price.

Q1. I was not aware, they had a school uniform range. I have only been in Matalan a few times before and didn't notice.

Q2. I was very impressed. The fit is good , they have washed well and the prices are reasonable.

Q3. We chose the flat front trousers in grey. My 11 year old son thought that they were more comfortable than the ones we normally buy and he had no problems playing football in them! I normally get them from M&S and always have trouble with the hem coming down within a few weeks, but haven't had that problem with these trousers.

No - I knew that they did school uniform, but didn't know anything about what the range was like or the Teflon range as hadn’t previously looked at it.

Very good. It has washed well and worn well. Stayed nice and white despite the wearer’s best efforts.
