How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? I colour matched with Parchment, a Crown paint that we'd used before.

Which room did you decorate and why? Time was tight, so I just refreshed the bottom hallway. It gets lots of scrapes 'cos my son carries his bike up and downstairs so that he can do indoor training sessions. Only managed to do one wall today but it only took me an hour and a quarter, including cutting in, laying out the newspapers to protect the floor and getting the tin open Grin It then took me half an hour to clean the roller (which took most of the time) and the paintbrushes thoroughly.

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality. Was very impressed with how well it went on. Only problem I encountered (which nearly meant that I had to leave it today) was opening the bloody tin - eventually managed to do it with the end of an old fork levering all the way round to break the seal. Was very impressed with the coverage and pigmentation - a good match with the old colour and I've still got plenty left over so can either do a second coat (there might be a couple of patches as I was doing a light colour on a light colour) and/or do the rest of the hallway.

Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not? Very impressed. Would have liked to try a stronger pigment but that would've meant buying a lot more (our lounge, which is currently a wiped sponge Sienna orange, is far too large and I didn't want to do a feature wall just for the sake of it) and I wanted to try it first.

The paintbrushes and roller were very good too.

The service at B&Q (Darnley) was excellent, especially the first time I went up and got the colour chips (when I was still thinking of a feature wall) and the paintbrushes and roller set. Getting the paint colour matched and mixed on Saturday was very quick and straightforward - although I wasn't asked for my details to keep the mix on file (must remember to take a photo of the mix proportions on the lid).

Pictures don't really show much difference "before" and "after" but the scuff marks have all gone and in a week's time I can check how scrubbable it is. (Little dark smudge in the middle seems to be an iPhone quirk).

Dh was commenting yesterday how much he liked Farrow & Ball (his study is a nice pale olive green) - I think I might be able to convert him! Grin

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

I intended to have a colour sample matched, however I saw the colour 'Roman serenade' on the chip rack and thought it was perfect for my new upstairs bedroom having converted the loft into it.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

I was originally going to paint my hallway having just completed an extension, however once I saw the colour chip I decided I would paint my newly built bedroom instead of the magnolia I had painted it.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality. The paint was excellent quality and went on really well, it has only needed one coat and the colour is lovely. The roller brush was very good for the job.
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I definitely would use it again even though it is slightly more expensive than other brands. I think sometimes it is better to pay for quality especially when it needs to last.

These are my before and after photos, thanks for letting me test this!

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample? There was a massive choice of colours to choose from, all displayed on a shelving system in our local B&Q. We knew we wanted grey so compared some colour chips with a sample of the red we already had in the kitchen/dining room. We decided on Howl at the Moon (after much deliberation!) in a mid sheen finish. This was mixed for us in the time it took to locate the brushes and discover they did not stock the roller. We ended up having to go to a larger B&Q the following weekend so the project took a little longer than expected.
  • Which room did you decorate and why?
We chose the kitchen/dining room as it is a high traffic area and the walls are always getting scuffed or covered in dirty, sticky handprints. When we moved in the whole area was white so we wallpapered one wall at the dining room end but left the rest. It had been looking a bit tired and unfinished for a while so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to rectify that.
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
Dh and I took on this job together and both agreed that the paint covered very well and was easy to work with. It was a good consistency and not too drippy. We were both impressed by the lack of odour and how quickly the paint dried, touch dry in 1 hour and ready for a second coat in 2-4 hours. We found the edges needed 2 coats but the main areas covered well with 1 coat using the roller.
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Going on the finished look and ease of application we would definitely use Valspar Premium paint in our home again. We are very pleased with the finish and are hoping that when we get the opportunity to scrub the paint clean (can't imagine we will have long to wait, ha!) that it lives up to the same standard. Apparently it can be scrubbed with household cleaner and the rough side of a sponge so I will report back when we have tested that. The only thing that puts me off this paint is the price. It is very good quality so probably worth the higher price tag but we are quite tight with money and would be looking for this paint to be on offer if we were to do a larger area in our home.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
I chose from Drowsy Iris from the chip rack.
  • Which room did you decorate and why?
My bathroom as I was worried all of the other spaces in my house were too large to get a decent coverage of the paint. I was not brave enough to try a feature wall as I was too indecisive in the end.
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I actually quite enjoyed using this paint. It was quite easy to work with and overall it was of a good quality. I did find that once I removed the tape after the paint was dry, some parts of the paint lifted and I was not impressed by this.
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
The real test will come after I have attempted to scrub the walls and if it lives up to its claims then yes, I would consider consider using this paint again.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a decent Before picture so I have uploaded After pictures.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

We looked through the chip rack and took a selection of about 7 or 8 home to look at and hold up against the wall. We also bought a tester pot of our favourite colour and tried it on the wall to make sure it was the right colour for my daughters new bedroom. We chose 'Fairy Tutu'

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We brought a new house 4 weeks ago and the whole house needs revamping so we are trying to get the bedrooms done first. We used the Valspar on the room that will be my daughters as it was a mixture of wallpaper (which we removed), white wall and a dark orangey/red wall. We used the Valspar on all 4 walls to completely revamp the room.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

Excellent!! Great coverage, easy to use, true colour and no patchiness. We also bought a cheaper paint for my son's room and are having problems with patchiness - which we bought Valspar for that too! Really even application that just glided on the wall with the roller, easy to brush on too around the edges and perfectly colour matched the rollered part of the walls.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Most definitely. Two reasons, firstly I just love the immense choice of colours, you really can get the colour you want without compromising on a shade. Secondly the application was so easy and did the job thoroughly with no colour showing through whatsoever after 2nd coat. First coat was put on thinly and second coat turned it into the perfectly covered wall!

Just wanted to add why do all paint brands have rubbish containers!? They are generally difficult to get into. When you pour it out into a tray it all dribbles down the outside then you can't read the instructions at a later stage! Valspar as much as I enjoyed using the paint I think the biggest issue is the container! Maybe a spout? Or a non dribble pourer like Ribena have! Also (she goes on) I do have to add what excellent rollers and paint brushes Harris are, I will never use cheap own brand ones again! I'll go now!

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
I chose a colour already made 'you're blushing' for our small entrance. I wanted something warm but inoffensive!
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
Loved the fact it was easy to open unlike lots of other tins/pots. The application was good, may need another coat unsure yet as was only yesterday. Smell wasn't bad.
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes definitely I think it's good value for great colours and quality.

I chose from the colours on the chip rack, there was a good choice!

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

The dining room. I was going to do the living room, but the cost of the additional paint was astronomical.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I was impressed. It went on easily, and less splashing and dripping.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes for small rooms. No for anything big, as it was just so expensive.

Pics to follow...

We knew the colour as it was a replacement of the current colour- chose it from display and it was mixed and given to us really quickly
  • Which room did you decorate and why?
The hallway as it's the first in a long list of rooms to be decorated and was probably the most grubby! - Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality Really easy to use- loved the roller coverage and took no time to paint
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes although it's more prices than our usual choice of Dulux trade , it covered better and needed fewer coats

Thank you for letting me test it!

A final comment today. It is now properly dry, and I think the Matt finish is actually better than the wipe able F&B. Much more Matt than modern emulsion. I may be a complete convert, since we have a whole house to do, and lots of high traffic areas!

gruffaloshmuffalo · 02/12/2015 00:28

Finally picked up the paint. We'll be decorating on Sat so will fill in details then

How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
We matched a farrow colour sample - B&Q Penryn, amazing service, super fast, and staff rate the product highly.

Which room did you decorate and why?
We haven't yet finished the build of our daughters rooms to include them in the review so decided to use them on the hall & stairs. We are renovating the whole house (1930s Cornish bungalow) which has been trying but all worth it now...

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
Excellent choice of colours, as others have said liked the fact it wasnt super stinky too, and the finish is beautiful. A little really does go a long way - thought would need 2 tins, needed just 1.

Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
In a word absolutely. Not wishing to name and shame there are plenty of others (woofwoof) that I would not use again.
Thanks for allowing me to review.

The before picture is pretty boring so not much to show there so I will include a after picture.

Firstly, thank you for allowing me to test this paint. I do enjoy trying new things because I tend to stick to a brand that works. We have decorators in the family so it was a good exercise of compare and contrast.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
Choosing the colour was quite easy. Actually I chose a colour going by what was in the small booklet provided. It was good to see so many colours available so we picked something similar, a taupe shade as we have red accessories like vases etc. so thought it would complement that (in the picture the taupe paint was alongside red paint). We also used the light box and that was quite interesting.
  • Which room did you decorate and why?
We decorated the dining room as it is the room used the least. As were were in a hurry to get it done, it was the ideal room. Initially it was because it needed a bit of colour in it to liven it up.
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I am in two minds. It actually went on quite well with the first coat but it does need a second coat. I don't think the colour went up as described. I do expect it not always being the colour you think it is but it looks grey rather than taupe. We have grey in another room and it looks pretty similar to that. I thought it was a one coat paint but maybe the colour will pick up with a second coat. I can't give that feedback here yet though because of timing, we didn't have much time to get sorted before November ended (I know not in your hands) and with the kids. It is pricier than what we normally pay so if it was on offer like Dulux and Crown tend to do then I would consider it.

Anyway this is the part of the wall that has covered the best (see photo) but it does look taupe rather than grey but I need to try with a second coat. Also if you want to think about how well it went on, we used a brush for quite a lot of it to get it done quickly (more hands) and it didn't show any brush marks. If I wanted grey, this would be a great paint but as it is not the colour I wanted, that is the only negative.

I am so gutted I have to write this but here goes...

I always wanted a red coloured wall somewhere in the house but despite me loving the idea I didn't know how I'd feel with a big block of colour. We tend to go neutral. So this review opportunity seemed perfect. I get to try it and not pay for the step. We decorate by trade so paint is always coming in and out our house and we always use Dulux. It's a good price and it always works for us. So when I googled I was happy to know Valspar is a old brand that has been around for years, so it must be good right?

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

It wasn't hard for me. There were so many colours all I had to do was go to the red shades and pick one I liked the most. I picked up a couple of swatches and checked the different lighting but I liked them in all lights so I went ahead with the lighter shade of red and off I went.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

The guy said you could paint your kitchen with it (we normally use gloss) and since the rooms are quite big in the house, it didn't seem fit to try the red in the living room as I doubt it would cover it, so I went for the largest wall in the kitchen. Actually even that wall is quite big so I have a few things to say about the amount in the tin on this.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

When emptying the pot (easy to do), I was happy with the colour. Went and dipped the roller into the tray and onto the wall. Oh my goodness. It was applying all shades of wrong. Some parts were dark, some lighter, and if you went over it a little to get it even, it would rub off! I read on someone's comment earlier in the thread that their paints seem to work well with lighter colours and not so well with the dark colours. Well that is exactly what happened here. I have seen another mumsnetter's work (a lighter shade) and it looks good. This one was bad.
We kept going. Once you put a block of red you sort of got to. I am so glad I did not pay for this as it was a nightmare. I remember looking at one small block on the wall thinking that looks nice (it was still wet). The next morning it had dried into this dark, burnt red, almost black/brown. It wasn't good. Imagine seeing the entire wall like that. As I said we paint all the time and use Dulux, it always goes on eveninly and when you use a brush to do the corners it doesn't look any different. This one was like everytime you moved the brush or roller it would make a new shade of red.
We did get to do a second coat but it was still bad. It was meant to be a nice flat block of red. Now it looks mostly burnt, with some nicer specs of red but even those are bad because they are patchy. I googled to see if there was a technique to put on Valspar but it was sad to see so many people who had a similar experience.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn't. I don't trust it. I know with other brands like Dulux, I will get a result that is good. I don't have to think of potential bad paint. This can't be said with Valspar. I did see nice lighter shades in other homes but I didn't want a lighter shade, I wanted red. Pictures attached.

The before picture is yellow (shows darker here) and after, the Valspar.

I forgot to add:

There is actually a lot of paint in the tin. I was surprised. We have a big wall and we still have a lot left so we will see with the other coats.

Right, I have finally finished paintning. I struggled to find the rollers, but eventually got them.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

After reading some negative reviews, I was slightly dubious but overall, I loved it. It went on really well using both the brushes and the roller, it dried pretty quickly and went a long way. I had left one wall as I didn't think I'd have enough nut I did in the end. My room is 13x10 ft to give the idea. It did need 2 coats but only a quick roll over again. I think the quality is great, not on carpet though.. Biscuit

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. I am tight as they come and hate paying over the odds but I genuinely think this is worth the £27. In fact, I have already recommended to another tightwad!

I will add pictures from m phone. Thanks for the opportunity to do this and also for the rollers and brushes, I think they made it a lot easier too as i usually go for the cheapest

I have really enjoyed this product test. Picking my colour was great fun and I was amazed at the huge range of colours available. Firstly, we picked the colours we liked the most, then looked at them again in the section of different light effects (which I think is a fab idea) before finally narrowing it down to 5 samples to bring home and look at in the room. We finally went for I'm blushing a gorgeous soft pink. We chose to decorate our bedroom as it was looking a bit tired and had some messy little hand prints dotted around! Application was easy and the paint was of a really good quality. It went on easily with excellent coverage and the finish was amazing. Although I found it slightly expensive I would definitely buy and use this paint again as I found it to be excellent quality and amazing finish. Well worth the extra cost.

MillyMollyMardy · 03/12/2015 22:15

How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
I took in a cushion and matched it to a colour on the chip rack. I have matched a colour wth the machine frm a paint chip on a wall I was repainting and it was a brilliant match.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?
Living room as it's looking really tired and beige just looks really cold in the winter light. It's not quite finished so will post when it's done.
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I have used Valspar in other parts of the house and keen to see how washable the premium range is but have been warned by a lovely sales assistant in our B+Q not to try washing it for a week after painting so can't feedback yet.
  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definately for colour matching and have been impressed by the coverage of the paint and love the matt finish on the paint I got.

- How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

Choosing the colour was easy. We set aside some kid free time and went to have a look! We hadn't decided on a colour so looked at the chips and through the catalogue when we were there. We picked a few that we liked, tried them in the different light boxes and settled on one - British Shorthair.
The staff at B&Q were great, and explained the different finishes we could have - we went for Mid--Sheen.
They also really helped by ordering the roller and tray and brushes for us as they weren't available in store.

- Which room did you decorate and why?

We painted the main wall in the hall as we had it plastered 4 years ago and then just left it as we had just had our second child. After a while we then decided we were going to do an extension 'soon' and so felt there was no point decorating it if it was going to get damaged so left it again. We've just finished most of the extension works now so this seemed like a good time to get on and pick a colour and PAINT IT!

- Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I did the painting and found it really easy to use. The paint is easy to apply using either a brush or roller. It covers really well and evenly. The colour we picked is quite dark but we had no patchy problem areas as we have with some other paints (Farrow and Ball). I may go over and do a second coat but there really isn't any need as we have had with other paints (looking at you, stupid walls that took 3 coats of Crown paint!). I found it really easy to wipe up if I went onto the woodwork, it didn't smear everywhere like some other paints. It also washed out of the brush and roller just using water. I would say the product quality is really good.

- Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Absolutely! I think the choice of colours is fantastic and love the colour matching idea. The quality of the paint is really good. It goes on the walls easily, covers well and the clean up process is pretty quick.

Screwed up here as I chose a colour for the spare bedroom, but got the wrong sort of paint so couldn't get it with the voucher. Decided to still buy it and go back for the premium too, but everywhere else in the house just needs re-done in white so bought brilliant white for the test in the end!
  • Which room did you decorate and why?
The hall. We had building work done last year and the whole house skimmed. I did a slapdash attempt at painting everywhere after that but it all still needs a final coat or two and the hall is suffering from 2 little boys smearing their hands on the wall as they go up and down stairs.

Went on okay, but once it was dry looked great. It was much more matt looking than the previous paint, and finally looks finished. Haven't had reason to scrub marks off it yet. That will be an interesting test. It really wasn't brilliant white though - previously I've used whatever paint is cheapest, pretty much every brand and they all go on the same colour. This is slightly greyer, only noticeably so against the white. I need to do the top hall too now, hope another pot will match the colour.

I am going to buy more to finish the hall upstairs. It is mighty pricy compared to my normal system of buying whatever is on offer, but if the colour is consistent and it is as wipe able as they claim I may just stick with it as I love the really matt finish.

Painting has been delayed here due to all 4 children being I'll one after the other, but I'm going to get on it as soon as I can!!
Sorry!

I choose from a chip as I only wanted a neutral colour.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

Childs bedroom as I thought this paint would be tough.

It was quite easy to apply although there we some bits of dried paint mixed in so I had to pick the odd bit off the wall. Easy to apply and good coverage.

Yes because it is easy to wipe off marks and doesn't scuff easily.
