Since there was still paint left after doing two ceilings, I painted the lower half of the kitchen in the blue too, up to worktop level (as pictured). This should test the durability and cleanability of the paint, as it incorporates the wall behind the kitchen bin and the wall beside the dishwasher, both of which are prone to food stains!
It covered well, but it was really hard to get the lid back on the paint tin at the end.
Also, some paint dried onto the roller, and formed caked-on blobs which do not wash off (also pictured). Not sure if it's the paint, the roller or me at fault there, but thought I'd feed it back.

Finished!!

-How did you find choosing the paint?

I painted my hallway which is quite dark so I needed a lighter colour. The light box at Valspar desk in B&Q which shows how the paint will look under different lights was really helpful as I was going to go for a darker shade. In the end I chose Coconut Juice which is a crisp white and perfect for brightening up the space.

I got lots of help from the paint desk (once I'd managed to locate a salesperson which isn't easy in B&Q!) and good advice on both paint colour and application.

-Which room did you choose and why?

My hallway is the only space I haven't recently decorated and needed repainting over really grubby looking Dulux Timeless!

-Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I have used lots of different paint over the last few years and totally redecorated the rest of my house using Dulux, Craig and Rose, Crown and B&Q Colours but found this very easy to use. It's surprising thin but gave great coverage with both the roller and brush. I found it easier to apply to the walls than Dulux Kitchen paint which I found very thick and difficult to work with. I will definitely use Valspar again.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

I had an idea of the colour I wanted for our feature wall, so went to B&Q and bought 3 tester pots of colours from the chip rack - I found it helpful to use the inbuilt light in the display to try and work out if they were likely to be the right colours. When I tested all 3 colours, they were all very nice but I was particularly drawn to one - ‘Pocketful of Posies' - a deep pinky/red colour - perfect to go with my light grey for the rest of the room - Valspar Mink Frost which I had bought a while ago but never got round to using.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

Our bedroom. It was boring magnolia and pretty shabby looking. We have been in our house for nearly 2 years and haven’t got round to painting it yet. It needed some colour injected into it.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

The paint is clearly good quality paint - the grey paint needed one full coat and then a touching up coat, where as the dark pink has had 3 full coats and I think it might need one more just to make it absolutely perfect. This isn’t to do with the quality of the paint, it’s just where the wall was so light and now is dark. Luckily it isn’t a massive wall so not a problem to do another quick coat. It applies very nicely with both brush and a roller.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes definitely - I love the choice of colours and that I can also have a custom colour made. I love that the tester pots are really big so you can actually get all your edges done with this pot, easier to carry up a ladder! I like that the tester cards are pretty much exactly the same colour as the paint when it is on your wall. It is good quality paint.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

DD wanted "Fiat Green"- the new minty green colour on Fiat 500s. There were so many colours on the rack she found a good match there. It was quick and easy and DD enjoyed watching the mixing machine in use.
The nice man in B&Q helped us to find the brush and rollers and advised that I don't leave the paint loose in my boot as there is a small chance it could pop open. Good to know but it didn't.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We decorated DD's room. She has just got rid of pretty much all her toys and wanted a more grown-up room. We are waiting until after Christmas to order her a new bed (small double) and curtains to finish the look.
I am also waiting for her to tidy up so I can take the 'after' pics.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

The paint was lovely to use, went on well, no splashing, hardly any smell.
However, the colour was a bit patchy in places so one coat wasn't enough.
I wonder if this is because it was quite a vibrant shade?

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would use it again if it was on offer, as the amazing colour selection and ease of use make it a great paint choice, but at £27 for a small tin, it's not the cheapest.

Pics to follow when her room is tidy (hopefully tomorrow).

How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

We bought a tester pot after browsing the colours and then opted for a shade of blue two shades lighter than the tester. Bahama Breeze.

Which room did you choose and why?

We had been going to paint our living room with a dark blue but like I said further up, there was no base paint in stock to make the darker colours. They could only make light colours so we have painted our twelve year old daughter's bedroom. This is the first time she has ever had any input into her bedroom so she has been looking online for inspiration. We had looked at the Dulux and Crown ranges before but couldn't find anything that was what she wanted until now. She loved looking at all the different chips.

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I thought the paint was good quality. We only needed one coat with a few light touch ups where the finish was speckled. The 2.5l easily covered her bedroom. The paint went on well and the colour is glorious and very accurate to the original chip.

Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would use it again as I didn't have to put on two coats which is a definite bonus. However if I couldn't get it, like I couldn't yesterday and today then I would buy another brand. When you are ready to paint, you are ready to paint. You don't want to wait until Thursday.

We have just started painting, but here are our first answers. Thank you for the paint and accessories!

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

There were so many colours to choose from, we were overwhelmed, we really liked being able to put the chip under the different lights to see how it looked. The colour names were brilliant. We opted for puppy paws which is a lovely dusky cream/pink

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We are decorating the living room as it's not been done in the four years we've lived here! Its currently a very pale yellow cream. There are lots of finger prints from our sticky toddler so it will be wonderful to have wipe clean paint!

1.How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
I matched a colour sample - I wanted a kind of mid century olive, but not too dark. Found this kind of buttery olive colour, which looks restful by day and warm at night.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

Feature wall in living room. When we moved in it was orange, very orange (see first photo - some of the lining paper has peeled off to reveal what we moved into!). For five years we've lived with a very pale neutral which is lovely but got a bit dull. Also, the living room suffers a bit from feeling like a waiting room - it's straight in off the street, is the thoroughfare to the kitchen, and has an open staircase. There are no original features, it's just a square box on the side of a corridor. It's also north facing and a bit dark and cold. I decided to just go with the dark and not be scared of a strong colour.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

Really great - went on easily and covered well. No problems with smell.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely! I was very impressed with the quality and the range of colours, and it's good value. The only problem is that I had to travel a bit to get it, and I don't have a car.

Thanks so much for including me - I love painting and colours and really enjoyed discovering Valspar.

Sorry, realise I don't have a 'before' photo - but you can see the very pale grey next to the olive - it was that all over.

I'll try again posting the evil orange colour, just for your entertainment - please note that this colour was all over the room and up the stairs!

Marking space...only got our paint/brushes at the weekend (we are a car-free family and no local B&Q) sooooo not sure when painting will commence - hopefully some time this week.

So far, so good with sourcing the paint and brushes though, once we managed to get to a B&Q Wink.

  • Which room did you decorate and why? i did my bedroom as it badly needs sprucing up and i want a calm room to relax in
  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality. the paint was fantastic went on easily no drips or smell. i am very impressed with the quality of it. the coverage was good and it went far. • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

It was more expensive than i would usually buy as i am on a tight budget but it is well worth the money. It was easy to apply ,only needs one coat and looks really good. I would recommend it to others and i would buy it again. Thank you for picking me for the trial. The brushes and roller were very good quality too.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

I had a newborn baby outfit that I loved the colour of - a minty green - so I took that along and found a chip that virtually matched it - Dip in the pool. There was lots of choice which I loved and liked the machine to show what the colour is like under different lights. Had no problem getting the roller and brushes.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We wanted to turn our study into a nursery, so this product trial came at the perfect time.

- Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

Day 1 - to be honest, I was in tears. (I am 5 months pregnant!). I did the cutting in, but as soon as I used the roller, anything I had previously painted just came away from the wall - so I couldn't even roller over what I had just rollered. This left a shocking finish and I had ugly patches where the magnolia underneath was showing through. I stupidly tried to dab the paint into the gaps which left me with a bubbly surface. I stopped after 2 walls and went back to B&Q who said they had never heard of this issue before and that the Valspar technician was the best person to ask, but wouldn't be in until Weds. I work, so couldn't return mid week. I ended up buying 2 tins of cheaper paint in the hope I could cover it / start again. When I got home, I decided to continue with the Valspar and hope that a second coat would cover the problem. Its a very small room, but I needed virtually the whole tin to do the first coat.

Day 2 - Went back to B&Q and paid £27 for another tin. Tried to sandpaper down the now uneven walls and applied the second coat. This went on much better - I guess how it is supposed to and as previous posters have experienced.

I have no idea if the problem is caused by the paint underneath or a dodgy first tin. The original paint looks like a standard matt magnolia, but we only moved in last year so I wouldn't know how to tell if it is oil based. The Valspar paint says that it contains primer too, so I wasn't expecting it to be an issue anyway.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not unless I could guarantee that the experience I had wouldn't happen again. I fully admit I'm not a greatly experienced painter, but I have never come across this issue before of the paint not sticking to the wall with cheaper paints I have bought. I would have expected am expensive brand to be able to cover any paint underneath. That said, if you ignore the uneven surface left in some places, I love the colour and finish. It was also interesting that when I did sandpaper the first layer, hardly any paint came off, so I have high hopes for its scrubability!

Pics show old; new; and uneven surface. I also have pics of the patches / lifting off if required.

I was delighted to be chosen for this trial so I could add more colour to the house. We only moved in in June so we are slowly adding our stamp to our new home and this was a great chance.

How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?
I had a rough idea of the colour I was looking for based on a previous colour I had used, so just looked at the colours on the chip rack and chose one that looked similar - as an added bonus the colour I chose was called Pinot Noir, which I took as an omen! Grin
The local store was a larger B&Q so had no difficulty getting everything and the staff were very helpful when I explained what I wanted - they recommended the finish and checked that I would have enough for the task.

Which room did you decorate and why?
I chose to do a feature wall in our bedroom. The whole bedroom is covered in vinyl wallpaper. Most of the room is an inoffensive cream colour, but the wall the the bed sits against was covered in yellow flowers which, while not hideous, is definitely not "us". Ideally, the whole room needs stripped and replastered, but there are more pressing areas of the house to spend money on so I thought I'd really test the Valspar paint and simply paint over the existing wallpaper.

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
The paint is slightly runnier than I've been used to; I generally go for own brand colours. Applying it was easy, the roller and brushes made it easy to do all the area although I did use my own industrial quality paint tray as I found the free tray quite bendy.
The first coat was very patchy but I was expecting that due to the paper underneath soaking the paint up like a sponge. In the event, I had to do three coats, but am happy with the finished quality. Due to the vinyl patterned and coloured paper underneath, I wouldn't say it's a totally uniform colour; the flowers are slightly darker but it looks intentional so I'm happy. I do still have enough in the tin to do another coat, maybe two so the coverage is excellent.

Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would consider it, but probably only for smaller areas given the relative cost. I rarely want a specific colour; I tend to buy tester pots and do whole rooms so colour matching isn't something is need to use.

The pictures show the original wall, the first coat and the finished wall (which is less patchy than it looks due to light reflections!)

I have thoroughly enjoyed this product test. I'm in the process of redecorating a huge old house so have tried many different types of paint over the last year or so. I had tried the bog standard Valspar paint in a bathroom and was so disappointed with the quality - had to immediately paint over it with Dulux - that I didn't have high hopes of this paint. I certainly wouldn't have tried it had I had to pay for it. However, I've been really impressed!

How did you choose your paint?
I wanted to colour match Farrow and Ball Strong White. I used that in a bedroom and absolutely love the colour, but my budget at the moe ntwouldnt stretch to buying any more! I have tried, and failed, to find an equivalent in cheaper off-the-shelf paint brands.
I took a swatch of paint from the dregs left in a F&B tin and the lady at the store created my paint for me in just a couple of minutes! Bizarrely when it was made it looked nothing at all like my swatch but when I opened the tin a few days later it did.

which room did you paint?
I painted a section of the upstairs landing. I had originally said that I'd paint my hallway but didn't realise that we'd only get one tub of paint and that would have needed several. It is a high traffic area as the children dash through to get to their bedrooms, often bashing into the walls. I painted over several scratches and stains and I will be interested to see how scrubbable the paint actually is! It was previously painted in Dulux Natural Calico, and was looking a bit drab and tired.

overall experience
I was really impressed at the quality of the paint. It was very thick and a real pleasure to apply. As such I was able to paint the area really quickly. I did need to apply two coats - looked a bit patchy after one - and the tub only just had enough paint for my needs. I've just measured and the area I painted was close to 25 sq metres.

It dried very quickly, even though the house is cold and I painted on very cold days.

My only major gripe was that the tub was really difficult to get open! I'm pretty strong but really struggled!

In terms of the colour, it is close but not the same as the F&B colour I sought to match. I would say it is a shade or two lighter and doesn't have the same depth of colour. The F&B one looks like a very pale but warm grey, whereas the Valspar one is more of a white. It is still lovely though!

The roller and brushes were much better than the ones I normally use, which has been a revelation too! In the past I've bused economy ones and thrown them away afterwards. See were so good I made an effort to clean and store them well.

Would you use it again
Yes, if I needed a particular colour and couldn't find it as a ready made Dulux paint. However, it is a lot more expensive than Dulux (which is always on a multi-buy promotion somewhere). I don't think I can answer this one for sure until I see how scrubbable and durable it turns out to be.

I have attached photos of before and after. The colour is quite subtle so I'm not sure how clear they are. The paint in the 'after' photo looks closer to what I wanted in the photo than it does in reality.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

The hardest part was convincing DH that he really did want a pale pink hallway and landing. We chose from the chip rack - I started at pale grey and worked towards the pinker end of the spectrum. Poor man never stood a chance. It was really easy and the colour selection was great. The DCs loved watching the paint shaky machine (technical term)!

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We decorated the hallway and landing - we moved in 6 years ago and the house had been newly done in magnolia (urgh). We had prioritised the other rooms so this was the only magnolia area remaining. Plus there was a grim trail of stick black fingerprints up the wall of the stair well that I was keen to eradicate (thanks kids).

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I thought the paint was really good. We have used the brand in our kitchen befor (but the special kitchen paint in there), so I knew what to expect. I used paint pads for good coverage.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes definitely - I think it's excellent paint at a reasonable price, the colour selection is fab and we love round the corner from a B&Q megastore!

Stupidly I forgot to take a 'before' photo, but you can see the colour in this photo (with kitten for added cuteness)

Thanks very much for letting me do this trial, it has meant we could finally add a splash of colour to our magnolia living room..although i did have issues getting hold of the roller, i got my paint and brushes from lancaster b&q but had to order my roller in at kendal b&q. Bit of a nightmare really!!

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

I had deciced on a teal shade but when i consulted my hubby he said he wasnt keen and to choose a different colour. Well we have a Fushia Pink feature wall in our bedroom (it was our wedding colour) our boys room is stripy blue, my bathroom grey, my kitchen is a light shade of grey accentuated with green, so i wanted something completely different so 'I' chose a purple (hatter's plush) much to his disagreement Wink

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

I chose to do a feature wall in our living room which was the only undecorated room in the house. I have wanted to do a feature wall for sometime but could never chose a colour, this product test made me get my thinking cap on and get on with it.

- Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.
I was really pleased with how thick the paint was and that it didn't drip at all on brush or roller (which are brilliant by the way and i would definately purchase them again) anyway back to the paint, i found the first coat not as good as i was expecting for a £27.00 tin of paint. Me and the hubby were slightly concerned that it was going to be one of them projects that had to be redone as soon as it was finished, but we were wrong the second coat really brought the paint to life and the colour and finish is fab. Anyone who has seen the wall say that it looks great and has really improved our living room so i thank you for that.

  • Would you consider using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have used many different brands of paint from stores own to dulux, and i have found them to be adequate for my needs and budget. As a mum with 2 young boys painting projects have to be done on a budget so i probably wouldnt buy this brand again not because of the quality but because of the price tag. If anyone was to ask for a durable/wipeable paint with a larger budget than myself then i would definately recommend this particular brand.

Just a finishing touch my hubby absolutely loves the colour too now its all finished thank goodness Smile

Thankyou again for letting me be a part of this product test and il look forward to the next one....

How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

Really helpful, I loved the chips wall, so much easier to look at the colours and try them out against each other than on the old traditional style strips where they're all on one sheet
Loved the light panel too where you can see what it looks like in different lights, very useful to see under Eco lights for example

Which room did you decorate and why?

My spare bedroom wall, needed a feature wall and I wanted a calming green to try and make it look elegant!

Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

I found it almost creamier than my usual diy store own brand, a smoother consistency. Went on very sleekly and no patches!!! LOVED the fact I didn't have to spend hours constantly searching for lighter parts to touch up over and over again

Dried quickly, am waiting a week to try out the proclaimed "clean and wipe" aspect of the paint, which if it works will be a wonder product!

Absolutely, but maybe only for feature walls; it is very expensive in relation to other paints, so for the basic "magnolia beige" walls id probably use a cheaper variety.

For walls where I want a strong colour that lasts and is easy to apply then yes, I will now go to Valspar

Thank you!!!!!! I love my new wall, inspiring me to go and get more paint to do the rest of the house now Grin

As promised some of my before and after pictures.

I would also like to add to my review that I found the paint can hard to close after use.

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

We'd already tried several tester pots of other brands so we knew roughly what colour we wanted. We went into B&Q, had a happy 10 minutes playing with the cards in the different lights and made our decision - we went for Morning Haze, a light grey.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

Our living room. It was looking a bit tired and we've been meaning to do it for months so this gave us the incentive we needed. There wasn't enough paint to do two coats so we ended up buying an additional tin which was fair enough.

I have to say I was a little apprehensive about using the paint as I'd read some bad reviews and there was a couple in B&Q when we went who were talking about how awful it was to use! But we didn't have any problems at all. It was easy to use, went on nice and smoothly and we probably could have just done one coat as we were painting over an off-white paint but we did two anyway. We chose the Matt finish which some people have mentioned isn't as good for cleaning marks off but we'll just have to wait and see.

Absolutely! In fact I'm going to pick up a tester pot for the hallway next time I pass B&Q! That gets a lot of traffic and always seems to be covered in dirty fingerprints so if it can be scrubbed on a regular basis it'll be perfect.

Thanks for the opportunity to do this product test. Next on our to do list is a new carpet and a new sofa...

  • How did you find choosing your colour? Did you choose from the 2,000 colours on the chip rack or did you match a colour sample?

Easy peasy! Straight into B&Q and chose a Colour from the chip rack. I was very impressed at how easy the colour matching process was though. Unfortunately my local store didn't have any of the rollers and I didn't know I could ask for them to be sent so we used our own. Paintbrushes were great quality.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We decided that the living room needed decorating most as it was feeling dark and dingy and really needed brightening up.

  • Please describe the overall experience of using Valspar Premium Walls & Ceilings Paint, thinking about the application and product quality.

It was very easy paint to use, low odour and not too runny. It applied better on our rough render walls than the smooth walls but another coat soon sorted the patchiness out. Great colour and lovely mid sheen finish.

It was rather expensive at 27.99 but I would probably consider using it again as it has given a lovely finish and really made a difference to the living room. Now just to get the new curtains up and I'm all done :) See my little helper in the pics below!

We knew that we wanted a Teal shade before we went in, so we looked at the Teal shades on the colour chips for about 10 mins before we settled on the one we wanted. We're really happy wiht the colour and it turned out very much like that of the colour chip so that is a definite positive.

  • Which room did you decorate and why?

We decorated the lounge as this was the room we have been wanting to do for a while as it was all neutral (we are in rented accomodation) aso we wanted to inject a bit of colour into it.

I have to say that our paint was very thin, it was dripping when putting it on. When we removed the masking tape, which we'd bought quite expensively as cheaper ones aren't so good, it pulled off some of the Valspar paint with it which was very disappointing, this meant we had to go over bits we shouldn't have had to.

It dried well, with no lingering smell, and the colour is rich and smooth, so we're very happy with the finished result, despite the small issue with applying.

These are the photos of during painting, you can see that one coat wasn't enough, which ties in with the paint being thin. I will upload pictures of the finished product shortly.

We had no problem finding the roller set and paintbrushes, there were plenty in stock thankfully, the brushes were great as well, really good quality.

It is expensive so we probably would only buy it for 'special' as we couldn't afford to do the whole house in it. I'd love to try some of the other colours though, on feature walls again probably, and definitely a glitter one, that would be fab! Thanks for letting us try it.
