This is the feedback thread for the MNers who - along with their baby aged up to 6 months who are trying WaterWipes.

Here's what WaterWipes says: "Every time we change our baby's nappies, or use a wipe on their messy face or hands, we can be (without realising it) swabbing their sensitive, delicate, and highly absorbent skin with chemicals. Even when we reach for wipes labelled as "natural" or "sensitive", we do not realize how many ingredients and chemicals they actually contain, as we seldom scrutinise the ingredient list. WaterWipes contain only 2 ingredients: 99.9% Water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract. Non-irritating to even the most sensitive of children’s or Mums’ skin, WaterWipes help prevent and alleviate nappy rash and other sensitive skin conditions. WaterWipes are the only baby wipe ever to be endorsed by Allergy UK."

More info on WaterWipes here waterwipes.com

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Please also remember to complete the short survey we email you!

All who take part and who add feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I thought they were a good size (some brands, the wipes are a bit small so you end up using more) and texture, and a reasonable thickness (not flimsy). They were wet enough without being slimy, like some other brands can be. They were effective in most nappy situations, apart from one particularly stubborn poo, where the wipes could not get the yellow staining off the skin.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

It did - it was nice not to have the fake baby fragrance that a lot of other wipes have. They have definitely not caused any irritation, which some other brands have done. However, if I was concerned about using chemical-free wipes, I would use reusable cloth wipes with just water, rather than buy specialist disposable wipes.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes it would be, but again I would prefer to use reusable cloth wipes in that situation.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend to parents concerned about using chemicals on baby's skin, however they are too expensive for many people, compared to the cost of other brands / supermarket brands, so I would probably recommend cloth wipes first. I know a few more wealthy parents who do use water wipes, though.

Due to the amount of water in the wipes, I've found that the pack of wipes sometimes leaks into the changing bag, as the sticky cover on the front starts to lose its stickiness.

Ohfourfoxache · 09/07/2015 10:05

1 compared to other wipes, they definitely felt more luxurious - thicker, wetter, fresher. I found that I needed perhaps 1 or 2 compared to 3 or 4 of our regular wipes, so although WW are more expensive you maybe only need half as many.

2 it did make me think but not much. Ds is 4 months old and I was far more concerned about what chemicals he was exposed to when he was a new born. But to be quite honest, now I feel that he has to get used to chemicals to an extent (they're in everything) and he's (thankfully) absolutely fine so far. So for me the two ingredients wasn't a massive selling point. I was more impressed with the feel and the freshness.

3 yes, definitely suitable for other uses. With the recent hot weather I've done a few full wipe downs (with lots of giggles as a result!) just to try to keep him comfortable. They are particularly good for getting between little toes without becoming completely crumpled, and because they are so moist you don't need many.

4 I would recommend, but not too strongly. Yes they're great, but when you've got a new baby and you're on a budget it's hard to justify the extra spend, even if you don't need quite as many. Although marketing them for newborns, right where potential parents have a little bit of money and are concerned that their precious bundles will contract bubonic plague unless everything is sterilised, would probably work.

Other feedback
Packaging. Once the sticky bit gets wet, the pack just will not close properly. I've had to avoid putting them in my change bag because of leaks. And because you don't use as many each time, the pack stays around for ages with suboptimal sealing. It is a pain in the backside.

To overcome this, could WW make a sealable plastic unit that could be sold separately? Putting a clickable unit on each pack is going to be costly and cause excess waste, whereas I'd definitely get a sealable unit specifically for WW. I know that you can put it in a plastic bag and it will "stop the leaks" in your bag, but then you get moisture all over the outside of the packet and the plastic bag invariably leaks anyway.

Also, could really, really do with a little bit of colour or something to make the tab open bit identifiable. It's only a little thing, but doing a night change with minimal light, bleary eyed and don't quite know what you're doing, it would be helpful to have some idea of what end of the tab opens. It's a tiny frustration in the cold light of day, but at 3am it feels like trying to negotiate world peace.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

They are wetter and softer than our usual wipes, and didn't tear. They're also easier to get out of the packet. One wipe did the job of two of my usual wipes.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Not really, I already look at ingredients on other wipes as my toddler has various allergies and skin sensitivities.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, I'd use these for wiping faces and bodies as well as nappies. I find that my usual sensitive wipes aren't good on the face as they're too harsh, but these seem fine.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

If they were cheaper I would- they cost over 3 times as much as my usual wipes so aren't cost effective. They do a great job, though not as different to my usual ones to make the change at the higher expense. At the price they are, no.

joeyhanmum · 09/07/2015 15:34

Q1. Definitely a lot thicker, bigger and wetter. Only occasionally did more than one wipe come out at once. Generally I used a lot less wipes per change than with my normal wipes.

Q2. Not really -'might do if I can find the time! I assume (possibly wrongly) that products for children have gone through some kind of appropriate testing anyway?

Q3. Yes, this is where they do offer a good alternative use. I happily used them on bodies and faces, especially on my toddler as well as newborn!

Q4. I would recommend them for their qualities though like other comments, the packaging was not very good. I kept them at home rather than in my changing bag. The price is simply too high for me, I buy supermarket own brand fragrance free which are much cheaper. Although I used less water wipes because of their quality, the cost would still be too much. I also couldn't understand why they are so expensive?

babaluscious · 09/07/2015 19:02

Q1. The wipes were think and quite soft but I found them very wet in comparison to other wipes. The last few in the packet were even more so and required wringing out before use. There was no discernable fragrance which I didn't think I'd mind but sometimes a fresh, clean smell can be quite reassuring.
Q2. Using these wipes did make me consider what is in other wipes yes. But I guess as long as other wipes are safe to use it wouldn't put me off using them. Also, weirdly the fact that these wipes are mostly water actually made me question their value with regards to price. Apart from the convenience factor it's no different to using a wet felt cloth.
Q3. I used the wipes on my daughter's face after eating and did find them quite kind on her skin. Though they were too wet for her bottom as she has nappy rash and these wipes left her bum too wet (I actually patted her with a soft cloth before applying her nappy cream). I did quite like using them to wipe my own face though :-)
Q4. I probably would recommend them but would prewarn that they are quite wet.

HuggleBear · 09/07/2015 20:03

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

The water wipes are much thicker than my usual wipes and have a better quality feel to them. They are also very moist in comparison to my usual which was great for cleaning the dirty bottoms! As pp, the few at the bottom of the pack were maybe too wet.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, especially when I realised that my 2 year old had stopped squirming when I used them on her. She has quite sensitive skin and although I use sensitive wipes usually, I think they sting her.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Definitely. My 2 yr old DD seems quite sensitive but is ok with water wipes. My DS who is the real tester At 5months will be weaning soon and water wipes would be perfect.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Absolutely. Great quality, natural and fab for new/ sensitive skin. Only snag is the price and although I will be purchasing some, they won't be my only wipes I use.

lindsbren · 09/07/2015 23:13

Q1. I found them to very strong and quite wet, which worked well, they didn't smell chemically or fragranced either and cleaned very well without being sticky.
Q2. My toddler has very sensitive skin so I've always looked at the ingredients in wipes, but I tried these on her too and they were very good - she had no reactions at all.
Q3. I used them for my baby's face, my toddlers hands and face, and my hands - they work well against chocolate and suncream!
Q4. I would definitely recommend them and will be buying them again. I think the price is high, but I already buy expensive wipes for my toddlers sensitive skin, and I think these are better than the ones I currently buy.

HollyBen · 10/07/2015 17:14

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?
The wipes didn't have the chemically smell that normal wipes have. They feel stonger, thicker and softer. Overall the feel like they are kinder to my babies skin.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?
Yes. We had issues with normal wipes on my daughters skin. It was especially apparent when used on her face as it came out in an angry red rash.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?
Yes. I think they would be much better for use during weaning. I would be happy to wipes hands and faces without fear to reactions on their skin.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not
I would recommend in terms to smell and results. However I would caveat this by saying they are considerably more expensive that normal or even sensitive skin versions.

Lewaney3 · 11/07/2015 02:49

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I used these for my newborn twins and I have found them very soft and a nice thickness. Perfect for all the poo nappies I've had to deal with!

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?
Definitely made me think twice.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?
Yes I will definitely be considering purchasing these wipes and using them for face and hands wiping.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not? Yes. They're nice and soft. They also seem more durable than other wipes due to their thickness. There is also not such a strong fragrance.

Fifinella · 11/07/2015 14:39

Q1. They were fine to use, a bit less smooth on skin than my normal wipes (Pampers Sensitive or Johnson's) but just as thick, strong, durable etc. They smelt nicer than the Pampers, more fruity and less chemically.

Q2. Not especially, I know other wipes have chemicals, and when my DC were newborns we used cotton pads and water, but we moved to wipes quickly anyway.

Q3. Yes, we use wipes for hands and faces as well as nappy changes anyway, mainly when out and about.

Q4. Yes, though they are quite expensive compared to other brands, and less soft to use as I mentioned. If they were on offer, definitely.

Boglin · 12/07/2015 08:54

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

We usually use Huggies Pure wipes so there wasn't a huge difference although the Water Wipes did seem thicker and larger. They were also much wetter.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, these wipes feel much cleaner and purer so it does make you wonder what is in the others, even the supposedly pure ones.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, definitely. They were used for face and hand wiping of both the baby and the toddler and I felt like they got things cleaner than the Huggies wipes, especially hands, because they're so wet.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I would, especially for babies who have sensitive skin or issues such as eczema and they are very nice to use but they are expensive so I wouldn't recommend them above other wipes if there were no skin issues.

Q1. I found using Water Wipes a good experience. Each wipe is slightly bigger than the size of the wipes I normally use. I found that they cleaned up my baby equally as well the Pampers Sensitive Wipes that I normally use - I wouldn't say they were better.
I found that Water Wipes were of a thicker texture and stronger than the usual Pampers brand that I use. However I felt they were a little too wet and in terms of texture, I feel they have a roughness to them.

Q2.
It does make you wonder why so many other additional ingredients are in other products but to be honest, it's not a big deal to me.

Q3.
Yes Water Wipes could potentially be really good for wiping faces and hands, if it can clean dirty bums, it can clean other parts of the body!

Q4.
I would definetly recommend if I knew someone was looking for a chemical free product to use on their baby - but I would make it clear that they are relatively more expensive than "standard" baby wipes available. They are a very good product that does it what it says it will do but unfortunately I think the higher price will prevent many from buying them regularly.

terianne · 13/07/2015 13:06

i love these wipes vary gentle on my wee ones skin they helped with reducing nappy rash as well would highly recommend them to anyone could be a bit cheaper though if you where to buy them in the shops

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I really liked these wipes, they seemed thicker, nice and moist without being wet and soggy and loved the fact they contain no chemicals. They were also very durable.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, it definately made me think. Even though I always buy the sensetive wipes, ive never really though what may be in those.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes I always use wipes for wiping faces and hands etc but again never given it enough though as to what they contain.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would. They are kind to skin, lovely and thick, durable and moist enough but not sopping wet.

milliemoon · 13/07/2015 19:19

Yes definitely

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?
Yes I would use them for face and hands

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes I was pleased with the quality

Titsalinabumsquash · 13/07/2015 20:32

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes?

They came at the perfect time for us, DD1 is a new baby and she's really suffering with a sore bottom, at home we use water and cotton cloths to clean her sensitive, sore skin but out and about I couldn't find an alternative so WaterWipes are perfect for that use alone.
They are thick and strong and they stay moist where as other wipes dry out easily or tear.
They clean up quickly and efficiently rather then just spreading poo around!

Q2. Did learning about WaterWipes make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

It did actually! Even brands promoting themselves as sensitive abs natural had loads of things in them which is worrying when a babies skin is no new and delicate.

Q3. Did you think the product would be suitable for other things aside from nappy changing?

I use them for wiping faces and hands, I like using as little chemicals on skin as possible, mine and my children's!

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other parents?

Yes! I have already, to a few parents and my health visitor. Grin After getting into a conversation about DD's sore bottom, I would/will recommend them in future too.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?
I really liked them- nice and thick, the right level of moisture, a decent size and more durable than many other makes.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes- the number of ingredients and chemicals in other wipes now scares me a bit.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

I happily used these to clean mucky faces, sticky hands and runny noses.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I would definitely recommend these. The only thing that puts me off is the price as they are never in big supermarket promotions such as the less that £1 a packs for Huggies Pure that I currently buy

plinkyplonks · 14/07/2015 12:36

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer

We had a really positive experience using WaterWipes. Not only do they feel a lot stronger and durable than other wet wipes we used, but also our baby seemed to like them better too! Since birth, we have been using water and cotton wool to clean our baby. However, when out and about - carrying cotton wool and sterile water can be a real pain. We tried other wet wipe products but found the baby got upset after using them. We found her bottom to be red sore - so I tried using wet wipes on my skin and found them too perfumed, too thin and they reacted badly with my skin. After such a negative experience, we were reluctant to give other brand wipes ago - but decided to give Waterwipes a try. They didn't react with my skin or the babies - and now we use them regularly both at both and when out and about. Waterwipes have become one of our changing bag essentials!

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Definitely, especially after such a negative experience with some other brand wipes. I don't want to be putting harsh chemicals on my baby's skin.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

We already use it for wiping her face down and have had no adverse reactions. No stinging, no crying - one happy mummy!

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend them - you know what ingredients go into them, they don't have that nasty alcoholic smell that some other brand wipes have, they are gentle on baby's skin, smell nice and are reasonably priced too. Very happy!

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I enjoyed using them - great for a newborn. They are definitely thicker than others so I used fewer, and they never threatened to split. Don't accidentally kneel on the pack though, or you'll get a very soggy knee.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Definitely to the point where I look at other paraben free/organic/natural wipes a recoil slightly.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Absolutely. Ds is 5+ months and this is all happening! Water wipes are great for all that dribbling, and seem to help tame his dribble rash by keeping his chin/neck clean and less angry.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

They're the best wipes there are, bar none. Not the cheapest though - and sometimes come out in clumps; not individually. But if you can afford it, use them. Or bulk buy when they're on offer!

Sorry I'm a bitlatewithmyfeedback!
Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?
Yes they are definitely thicker and nicer to use than other brands of wipes. I found them to be really wet which really helped make my baby seem clean.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?
Yes, I didn't realise how many ingredients there were in baby wipes

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?
Yes they're brilliant for cleaning hands and faces where normal baby wipes are ok but can leave stickiness. Water wipes leave skin feeling nice.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?
Yes they are brilliant. I personally won't be buying them again though as they are ridiculously expensive, I've got 3 children I can get through 3 or 4 packs of wipes a week so couldn't justify the cost.

houseofstark · 15/07/2015 11:50
  1. I found them to be really good. They cleaned bottoms very well and I used them on mucky hands too.
  1. Yes it did. I'm aware that other wipes have lots of chemicals in and I would prefer to avoid them if possible.
  1. Yes definitely suitable for mopping up other mess and cleaning things. But because they are natural I would probably just keep them for using on skin.
  1. I would recommend them but would also tell others the price. I think if you have a child with very sensitive skin, excess etc, them the price might not be an issue.
phoebebunny · 15/07/2015 13:54

Q1. I found the WaterWipes slightly thicker, stronger and softer than other wipes such as Pampers, Johnsons and Tesco although I think I used roughly the same amount of wipes for each brand. However I prefer the packaging of my usual Tesco Loves Baby wipes because they are easier to get out of the pack one-handed.

Q2. I have thought about the contents of other baby wipes however my daughter has never had any reaction to other wipes. For newborns though I think these are best if you don't want to use cotton wool and water.

Q3. Yes I think they would be suitable for wiping hands/face etc. although you could end up using lots of wipes very quickly and they are very expensive.

Q4. I would recommend WaterWipes to other parents, especially for newborns. I would recommend stocking up when they are on offer in Boots so they are not much more expensive than other brands.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

They're thicker and stronger than eg pampers but I'd say waitrose own brand is about the same.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

No, I was already aware of the ingredients of the other products we use. To be honest I found all the "chemical free" claims a bit annoying - water is a chemical!

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, I've used them on hands and faces when out and about.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

They're good, but expensive. They get more affordable if you buy the super value packs online (eg from ocado or amazon). We are using them as our baby has quite sensitive skin, but we'll probably switch to something like the cheeky wipes soon in order to save a bit.
