This is the feedback thread for the MNers who - along with their baby aged up to 6 months who are trying WaterWipes.

Here's what WaterWipes says: "Every time we change our baby's nappies, or use a wipe on their messy face or hands, we can be (without realising it) swabbing their sensitive, delicate, and highly absorbent skin with chemicals. Even when we reach for wipes labelled as "natural" or "sensitive", we do not realize how many ingredients and chemicals they actually contain, as we seldom scrutinise the ingredient list. WaterWipes contain only 2 ingredients: 99.9% Water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract. Non-irritating to even the most sensitive of children’s or Mums’ skin, WaterWipes help prevent and alleviate nappy rash and other sensitive skin conditions. WaterWipes are the only baby wipe ever to be endorsed by Allergy UK."

More info on WaterWipes here waterwipes.com

Below are the questions they’d like testers to answer but please feel free to add any other comments which you may have:

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Please also remember to complete the short survey we email you!

All who take part and who add feedback as required will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice.

Q1. Quality of the wipes was excellent, strong, thick and gave my baby's bottom a thorough clean.

Q2. I'm shocked at the ingredients that are in other wipes, even wipes that are marketed as being suitable for newborns and 'purest' can often be full of nasties!

Q3. I used these wipes all over my baby and had no hesitation even using them on her face which I'd never have done with other brands of wipes.

Q4. I'd highly recommend these water wipes, the price doesn't put me off as I know it's a high quality product. I'll definitely be buying thes again.

Snuggets · 06/07/2015 19:34

Q1) I loved these as they are nice and thick. Great for messy nappy poonamis and mucky weaning hands and face. Plus, they seemed to stay more moist than the brand I normally use on my DS.

Q2) Yes! Especially as my DS a has eczema and these don't aggravate it at all.

Q3) Yes, I use it all over my LO. Even around his nostrils for boogers lol

Q4) Absolutely would recommend these. They are the best wipes on the market. However, personally I am put off buying them by the price. It's just not affordable for mums. Every company besides supermarket store brands are hell bent on squeezing as much money out of mothers as possible. If the wipes have very little ingredients, this should be reflected in the price. I shall be sticking to actual water and/ or store branded wipes.

TotallyKerplunked · 06/07/2015 20:56

Q1. Wipes are larger and thicker than regular wipes and are certainly more durable, they don't rip / fingers don't go through them when in use and usually I only need 1 rather than 3+, they are also brilliant for cleaning up baby after the first poo as they are so gentle

Q2. Seeing the difference between water wipes and other wipes in there effect on my DD's skin has certainly made me think more about what is in the products that are supposedly for newborns, I have bought other wipes that were for sensitive skin and my DD still had a very sore bum after using them

Q3. Yes the wipes can be used for anything you would use any other wipe for however due to the cost I would only use them on very sensitive skin / nappy changes as it would seem like a waste to use them for a bit of dribble

Q4. I have already recommended these and indeed bought some for each of my 3 friends who have had / having babies this year.

FourAndDone · 07/07/2015 06:27

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?
Beautifully soft and didn't tear!!

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?
Yes! I haven't checked but assume there are a lot more chemicals in other brands which has now made me feel uneasy.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?
Lovely for use on hands and faces. I would use on myself also to freshen up etc.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?
I would recommend! I would stock up when on offer too.

postitnotes · 07/07/2015 09:46

Q1. I would say that the wipes are stronger, thicker, softer and more durable than other wipes.
Q2. I had always been aware of the ingredients in other wipes as I have sensitive skin and can't use facial wipes etc. I would not use a normal babywipe on my own skin so I am always reluctant to use them on my babies. I have always made my own wipes out of old towels which I then dampen with water.
Q3. I would think that the wipes would be much more suitable for use on hands and faces than other wipes due to the fewer chemicals.
Q4. I might recommend the wipes as being better for babies' skin, but I still advocate making your own as it is significantly cheaper.

Thisisimpossible · 07/07/2015 09:59

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

They felt thicker than other wipes I have used and were wetter, which meant that I needed to use fewer than usual to get DS's bottom clean. Another unexpected bonus was that with the odd rare exception, only one wipe came out of the pack at a time.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Definitely. I only used cotton wool and water for a long time, but the need for something practical to take on the run meant that I had hunted around previously for wipes that were less full of chemicals, but I had never found any other wipe with only 2 ingredients and thought that I'd have to settle for one with fewer nasty ingredients than the others. I was not aware of Waterwipes until this Mumsnet trial, despite the fact that they are supposed to be available in Tesco and Boots, two shops I frequent.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Absolutely. They will certainly be part of my 'leave the house' kit in the future.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes. They have been a revelation and are a welcome guilt-free shortcut to an easier life with very small babies. I was really impressed with them, and would love to use them all the time, however at nearly 3 times the cost of normal wipes, the price is prohibitive and therefore I will only be putting them in my 'going out of the house bag'. With all the costs associated with a baby it is a pity that the price prevents me from using them more often.

Emgrace · 07/07/2015 10:47

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I found the wipes great to use really very stong and durable compared to the brands of wipes i am currently using and also using 1 wipe maybe 2 max rather than 3-4 wipes.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes i was really impressed with only two ingredients, and love how natural they are, i feel really confident using them now.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby?s face might cause some irritation?

When we are out and about i use them for dribbling etc but when im at home i use a sponge, but i was satisfied with the wipe all round.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes i would recommend the wipes to my friend/family with babies, as i used less wipes even though more expensive than other wipes i like them being natural and they last longer, i have already brought more!!

Griftymoo · 07/07/2015 10:52

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I really liked using WaterWipes. My DD had mild nappy rash and it cleared up after using these wipes for a few days. I thought the thickness, softness and durability was comparable to other wipes but I liked the fact they didn't have a strong smell.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, I looked at the supermarket own-brand wipes that I use and noticed that they had a long list of ingredients. That made me think about the amount of chemicals that regular wipes contain.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

I would definitely use these wipes for face wiping/hand wiping for both my baby DD and my 4yr old DS, who has sensitive skin.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend them to other parents if they said their baby had nappy rash/sensitive skin but the price point would prevent me from recommending them more generally. I buy supermarket own brand, which are under a £1 each and these wipes are £3. I would pay a premium for these wipes but would hesitate at 3 times the cost. Also I have looked to buy these wipes at the supermarket and when I'm doing online shops and haven't been able to buy/order them as the supermarkets I have used (Asda, Morrisons, Tesco) don't seem to stock them in my area (North London).

MermaidinJeans · 07/07/2015 12:09

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

Absolutely. They felt wet rather than greasy, stronger and soft without being flimsy. They were a little larger than our usual wipes too which is another bonus.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, so much so that the first thing I did was compare ingredients to the 'sensitive ' One's we usually buy which then lead me to Google the ingredients listed on our usual wipes.....quite eye opening.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

My baby has eczema on her face. Usually I wouldn't dare touch her face with a disposible wipe as even sensitive wipes sting my face never mind trying them on hers! After removing my makeup with a WaterWipe and testing it on a cut with not even a tingle I used them on her face. She didn't even flinch! She even played with it dabbing her own face. I've even used them to clean up her eczema when it's bleeding. Bare in mind she's so sensitive that there's even a long list of eczema creams age can't use yet these were fine.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes. Absolutely. My baby felt cleaner with no greasy residue, we used less wipes, they're incredibly gentle and stayed wet. It's rare I'm converted by a product I review but I'm definitely a convert to these. My only problem with them is the price which is considerably higher than our usual wipes. I'd also prefer a plastic resealable lid. My baby felt clean and fresh not just wiped and the slight redness on her bum disappeared.

Goonergirl1 · 07/07/2015 14:00
  1. They were easy to use, thicker and less likely to tear but not as smooth going over baby's bottom as other wipes. I also like that they stay wet in the packet, despite being just water.
  1. Yes definitely - a little worrying when you look at the list of ingredients of other wipes and consider that I have been using them on newborn skin
  1. Yes definitely - wiping mucky faces when weaning
  1. Yes I would recommend these to other mums, particularly for newborns to avoid the hassle of cotton wool and water. Though given the price, I would suggest that they only need to use them for the first few months on a bottom and maybe again for weaning for wiping little faces.

Thank you again for my free sample, I have really enjoyed testing them.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I really liked the wipes, they are strong, soft and moist and don't tear easily like some.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

I have always been quite aware of what is in wipes as my daughter had really sensitive skin and so I usually use as natural as possible. I really like that there is no rubbish in these.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, I have used them for others things other than nappy changing

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would. They are really good but a little expensive and so I will stock up when they are on offer. They would be better if they were bio-degradable though.

sophie150 · 07/07/2015 22:19

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

yes waterwipes were thicker and softer and less soapy than usual wipes.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

yes - you could definitely feel that these wipes were not soapy like other wipes.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

perhaps, although the price would be prohibitive and my baby doesn't have particularly sensitive skin

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

yes to mums with babies with eczema or other skin complaints and as an alternative to cotton wool and water in the first few weeks. otherwise they are just too expensive for daily use.

Thanks for letting me use the product. I would definitely use in the first 6 weeks of any future children.

weeblueberry · 07/07/2015 23:53

Q1. They had a lovely natural scent that I appreciated and definitely seemed sturdier than most of the other brands I use.

Q2. It did make me question how many chemicals were in the other brands yes.

Q3. If I were to continue using the WaterWipes it would be to keep in our dining room to wipe my daughters face. She wasn't upset at having her mouth wiped with the WaterWipes like she does with the other wipes. Likely because there's no unpleasant chemical taste if some accidentally gets on her mouth.

Q4. I would recommend them if their child had sensitive skin but not for most parents. The price range is far more expensive than most (£3 vs 60p for some brands?) and is very prohibitive to many families.

Buttonbean2 · 08/07/2015 10:01
  1. They were definately thicker and softer than the other brands I used and were far moister. I used less when changing my baby due to the extra moisture.
  2. Yes. I checked the chemicals on my other wipes and even those that are 'Sensitive' had a number of chemicals included.
  3. My baby has very sensitive skin and excema and they are the only wipes that I can use on her face without causing inflamation.
4.Yes I would, particularly those with children with sensitive skin.
ReeBee · 08/07/2015 10:09

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I really liked using WaterWipes. They did feel thicker and softer. They didn't have the slightly 'slimy' feel that a number of others do. The full pack was very heavy though; made a difference to the weight of my change bag! They were also stronger although I didn't fully appreciate that until I went back to my usual brand (Huggies Pure) and ripped the first few I tried to get out of the packet. I did find that the WaterWipes clumped together when I tried to get them out of the pack sometimes which was a tiny bit annoying.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, absolutely. It made me check the packet for Huggies Pure, which I'd always assumed were as simple and natural as possible, and I was surprised at the list of chemical-sounding ingredients. I felt much happier using WaterWipes on my 5 month old twins due to that.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, would use to wipe the faces not only of my very sicky twins but also my very sticky and eczema-prone 6 year old.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would, especially for newborns and babies / children with eczema. The price is an issue as they're so much more expensive than other brands but I would definitely keep a pack on standby for nappy rash flare-ups etc. I tried to buy some from the supermarket when I'd finished the test but my nearest (large) Sainsbury's doesn't stock them which is a shame - the manufacturers might need to look at stockists.

MiniLop · 08/07/2015 10:16

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I enjoyed using water wipes, they were very effective, even on the messiest of nappies! Unlike other wipes I have tried, they were very strong and never tore while I was using them

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

I had never thought to look at the ingredients in the wipes I was using, luckily my son doesn't have sensitive skin so the ingredients in the wipes I normally use don't affect him, but obviously it's better to avoid using chemicals on his skin where possible

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

I was quite happy to use these wipes on my 4 month old son's face. Previously, if I needed to wipe his face I would use cotton wool and water rather than a wipe. Knowing they were mostly water made me feel happy to use them in this way.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes I most certainly would recommend them to other Mums, they are a brilliant product, although a little expensive compared to other wipes, they are undoubtedly the best wipe for newborns' skin.

katbags · 08/07/2015 12:55

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

They were nice and thick and large which I liked, however I found them a little too wet (which I know sounds ridiculous!) which I found hindered the wiping process and left my LO's bum saturated. Not so much of an issue at home but when out and trying to do a quick change this made them less convenient.

Also, compared to our preferred wipes which have a plastic lid which ensures only one wipe comes out at a time, I found it was easy to pull a large clump of water wipes out of the pack at once. Particularly given the usual price point, this would mean a lot of costly wastage.

Considering how pure they are I was however pleasantly surprised overall at how effective they were.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

No. I'm comfortable with the ingredients in other wipes (chemicals are everywhere!) and my LO has had no adverse reactions to normal wipes.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes - if it weren't for the price I'd be comfortable using these for a variety of uses.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not

If a parent were concerned about chemicals and/or their LO had experienced adverse reactions to normal wipes I would happily recommend they try water wipes. Ordinarily though I would not go out of my way to recommend them over other sensitive newborn wipes I've actually preferred and are much cheaper.

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I found them to be thicker, stronger and wetter

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

Yes, I started to read the ingredients list on other wet wipes.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Yes, certainly.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes definitely. They seemed like a superior product.

WhenASuitcaseJustWontDo · 08/07/2015 19:50

Q1. I definitely found WaterWipes a lot thicker and stronger than other wipes I have used. They felt almost cloth-like, and durable enough not to rip. WaterWipes seem to clean up more on a wipe per wipe basis than other brands.

Q2. I guess so. I tend to use natural/sls free/ paraben free products on all the family, so appreciated the natural approach to these wipes.

Q3. There are definitely many other uses, such as wiping a dribbly face, but to be honest I tended to stick to muslins or washing my little ones hands and faces with water. My youngest began teething very early yet I stuck to plain water rather than use wipes.

Q4. I would recommend WaterWipes to other parents for travel purposes, yet it is very hard to justify the price of them when water and cotton wool is gentle and preferable.

vickipickernicker · 08/07/2015 21:26

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

  • The wipes were lovely and thick and larger than most baby wipes, they were also soft and moist.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

  • Yes did make me wonder what went into other baby wipes

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

  • Yes I tried the wipes for wiping faces babies and mine

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

  • Yes for the purity that they offer, just not sure they cleaned bottom quite as clean occasionally with stuck on poo that my normal baby wipes do.
seaoflove · 08/07/2015 22:33

Q1. How did you find using WaterWipes? Did you notice a difference between them and ordinary wipes you may have used in the past? Were you describe them as being thicker, stronger, softer, more durable?

I would say they are equivalent to the brand I usually use (Huggies) in terms of thickness and durability.

Q2. Did learning that WaterWipes had only 2 ingredients, (99.9% Water and 0.1% Grapefruit Seed Extract), make you think about what was in other normal baby wipes?

A little, although I confess I've never checked the ingredients on a pack of Huggies! The fact Water Wipes only contain water is definitely a plus.

Q3. Did you think the product might be suitable for other uses aside from nappy changing, like face wiping or hand wiping in the teething/dribbling or weaning stages when little faces needs wiping but putting wipes with chemicals on baby’s face might cause some irritation?

Definitely, and I remember wipes irritating my first child's face when he used them to wipe her face when he was too lazy to fetch a flannel.

Q4. Would you recommend WaterWipes to other Mums/ parents? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes, because they are good quality, effective wipes with a good degree of wetness (some wipes are quite dry and ineffective). The "all natural" factor is a big draw because most parents are concerned about what goes on their baby's skin, and I know I am drawn to natural/organic baby creams and shampoos.

Price is, however, a problem. Weight is also a problem. A full pack is SO heavy and I wouldn't want one in my change bag. I weighed the full pack versus a full pack of Huggies and will post a photo in a moment.

seaoflove · 08/07/2015 22:52

Huggies = 324g
Water Wipes = 585g

Q1. Water wipes are definitely of a good quality. Needed only max two to clean a (breastfed) pooey nappy. But they did stick to each other a lot. Very good at cleaning baby. More effective than cotton wool and water.
Q2. Having only two ingredients did make me wonder why other brands have so many other chemicals but also made me question why Waterwipes were so expensive!
Q3 . I probably wouldn't use these during weaning due to the price. By then, I would be happy to use specific face wipes.
Q4. Yes I would recommend these to parents of newborns and if anyone had a baby with skin problems/ allergies. Very good for delicate skin.
