This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who tested Aldi’s Mamia nappies with their DCs.

Here’s what Aldi say, “Aldi’s Mamia nappies are fast becoming one of the UK’s favourite choice for babies from newborns to toddlers. The Ultra Dry Range scooped Gold at the Mother & Baby Awards for the second year running and has also been successful at the Lovedbyparents Awards, scooping Golds for the Size 3 Mamia Ultra Dry Midi Nappies and Size 4+ Mamia Ultra Dry Maxi+ Nappies. They also recently picked up the Bounty Mums Love Gold Best Private Label Nappy award.

“Aldi’s Mamia range is committed to offering savvy mums the best quality nappies for their little ones.

“As the range has been so successful in awards, we thought we’d put them to the test with Mumsnetters as we really value your opinion. As ever, you are the experts and we’d love to hear your feedback.”

The RRP for Aldi Mamia nappies are:
Size 1: 2-5kg/4-11lbs £1.49 (24 pack)

Overall impression:
Very good product, not too bulky so easy to put on my DD. Not had any tabs rip off which is a good sign as she enjoys trying to tug them off! Liked the pattern. Would be great if it was even more clear which was the back and the front as my DM has great difficulty seeing if the Lion character has a smiley face (to indicate the front of the nappy) and often tries to put them on the wrong way. Haven't had leakage issues at night which is the biggest plus point for me.

Value for money:
Great - I think they are the most cost effective out there and because they don't leak, I will certainly be buying them again. Since I'm so keen to save money at the moment, I will probably make special trips to stock up on them!

Recommend to a friend:
I might be flamed for saying it, but there can still sometimes be a bit of a reputation of being cheap if you buy products from Aldi so I am shy about recommending them (certainly in front of the very yummy mummy playgroup I attend). However amongst my close friends, I would happily sing their praises.

NerrSnerr · 22/03/2015 16:31
  1. Overall impression. These nappies look really nice. I love the animal design. They are thin and don't smell of chemicals. They didn't leak overnight and held in the biggest poo this morning.
  1. Great value for money. They look and perform like more expensive nappies.
  1. I would definitely recommend these to a friend. I'm very impressed.

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?

I really liked the "front" and "back" pictures as I'm brilliant at getting nappies back to front. They felt nice and soft and generally good quality.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?

Definitely good value for money and I would definitely use them again.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend them. DD is a bit of an epic wee-er overnight but in the spirit of product testing I put her in one overnight and there was no leakage. Although the nappy was very full it wasn't hard or very bulky like the Pampers can get.

Greymalkin · 22/03/2015 17:55

We've been using the nappies for a few days now and I'm very impressed with them. I was a tad cynical at first and didn't want to use the overnight at first, just in case they weren't up to scratch, but I really need not have worried! They have been great:

  1. Very impressed overall. My DS loves the animal designs on them. The tabs are very strong, not at all bulky, no leaks at all - even after contending with a massive poo that DS had been storing up for nearly two days (sorry, but it is definitely worth mentioning in this case)
  1. The napped are excellent value for money, considerably cheaper that premium and many other supermarket own brand nappies, but quality is just as good. I wouldn't hessitate to use again.
  1. I would quite happily recommend to other parents, for all the reasons outlined above.

Thanks for Selecting us to participate.

  1. I noticed no significant difference between the Aldi nappies and the Pampers ones I normally buy apart from in one respect the Aldi nappies were more generous sizing which really suited my daughter . 2)Excellent value for money I am swopping to them now and with two in nappies it's going to save me a packet.
  2. I will be recommending them to everyone in fact I bitterly regret not discovering them sooner they are brilliantly priced and fantastic quality with no horrid wee smell or leaking that you usually get with cheaper nappies .

I've used the nappies for a few days now and am very impressed. My daughter is on steroids so drinks a lot and is a 'heavy wetter' these have coped well and fit her well so no leaks around the legs. They are slim fitting and don't smell too chemically - we normally use Eco-disposables and on the occasions I've used Pampers etc I've found the smell off-putting. They are good value, almost half the price of supermarket Eco-nappies (similar price to a 30/32 pack but containing 56 in the size I tried). My only negative is they are not biodegradable, but for what they are they are great and I'd recommend them.

Catpawprint · 22/03/2015 20:46
  1. These nappies are excellent. I use Pampers because they are thin, fit well and last overnight. However, Mamia nappies are all 3 of these things too. The bonus thing is that they don't give off the same odd chemical smell that Papmers do.
  1. Yes, I think they are worth that and represent good value for the quality of nappy.
  2. I would, and now have recommended this nappy to friends.
sleepyhead · 22/03/2015 21:34

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?

I like them. They do the job, are as good as any supermarket nappy and no leaks (however ds2 seems to be a good average shape for nappies - we've never had any leaks in any brand). The design is attractive and they are slim and well fitting. They do have a bit of a synthetic smell straight out the packet but not off-putting. They feel a bit more papery than the Tesco ones, but again not enough to put me off.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?

We're using size 4+ which comes in at £4.39 for 44. The Tesco ones we normally get are £4.50 for 44 but currently are on offer 2 packs for £8, so yes, they're slightly cheaper for a single pack, and a competitive price, but not cheap enough to make a special trip for. If we used Pampers then they'd be much cheaper, but we have no loyalty to nappy brands and I think non-supermarket nappy brands are a huge waste of money.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?

If I knew a friend shopped in Aldi or lived close to an Aldi then yes, I'd recommend them. They wouldn't be worth making a special trip to buy. I would certainly tell anyone that they're as good as any other brand.

Unfortunately we don't live close enough to an Aldi to shop there. If we did I'd certainly buy these if I was shopping for other things and needed nappies.

SweetPeaPods · 23/03/2015 02:53

Q1 we have been using the nappies for a couple of days now and happy with them. I think I still prefer my usual pampers but than could be a case of what I'm used to! The mamia don't have a chemical smell which I liked but don't feel as soft as the pampers. Ds1 liked the pictures.
Q2 price is great value. I try to bulk buy nappies in a baby event so would try to do the same with these. It is convenient getting nappies delivered with my weekly shop though.
Q3 yes I would recommend if nappies came up in conversation.
Thanks for picking us!

Mummageddon · 23/03/2015 04:06

I like them, they worked well and we had no leaks. The price is also good, similar to other supermarket own brand prices I think.
I would recommend them to other parents.

But I wouldn't buy again at the moment purely from a practical point of view, because we normally get our nappies with our online weekly supermarket shop which is convenient for us as full time workers. If I went on mat leave again I would buy from our local Aldi if the price was cheaper.

CumbrianExile · 23/03/2015 08:30

Thanks for selecting us!

  1. I liked that they had no chemical smell, unlike Asda nappies. The pictures were cute, and easy to quickly tell front and back. We have had a poorly baby here the last week, and the nappies have coped with his diarrhea well.
  1. Price is great value, and as I am shopping more and more at Aldi I will start using these nappies.
  1. I would and have already, recommended them to friends.
milliemoon · 23/03/2015 08:32

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?
I was pleased with the nappies. They kept my son dry and seemed a good fit with a fun design on them. They are slightly thicker than the ones I currently use for him but son didn't seem to notice.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?
Yes I think this is good value for money

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes they seem good quality

hopelesslydevotedtoGu · 23/03/2015 09:04

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?
Liked the animal design, and that it is obvious which side is the front
Slim fitting
V absorbent
Will contain a morning poo when already wet (I find lots of disposables don't)
My negative is that I am environmentally conscious and I would ideally prefer a product with more environmental credentials for regular use (we use a mix of cloth and disposable nappies). I know you aren't going to get an environmentally friendly disposable, I am just explaining why I won't be buying lots of them.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?
Yes I thought they were cheap
We don't live near an Aldi though, I wouldn't travel for them

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would

Smudge588 · 23/03/2015 09:44

Hi, I tried the size 3 nappies.

  1. I thought they were bulkier and stiffer than pampers but definitely fine and held the contents well. I would definitely use them again
  1. Really good value. Better than supermarkets own brand in terms of quality and cheaper so it's win win.
  1. I would recommend them and buy them myself.

Thanks for sending them to me to test!

benfoldsfive · 23/03/2015 10:00

Q1. At first the thinness of the nappies put me off. My son is a big drinker and I thought we were in for a wet night and morning. Not only did. They manage to contain he wee, they didn't get bulky like other brands. The design is unisex and the tabs are very sticky (unlike some.). Both of us were very impressed with them.

Q2. Yes they are good value for money. I also found in had touching ds less as they didn't become bulky or full of gel so quickly. Other supermarket bands do deals.on multi buys though so everyone might not think so. I have to make a special trip for morrisons nappies. Aldi is closer and I do my majority shop there, so yes I will be buying again.

Q3. Yes I have already recommended them and will continue to do so. My friend borrowed one at mum and toddler group and has asked.me to pick her up a pack when I am next in. They are economical, stylish and not bulky!!

benfoldsfive · 23/03/2015 10:07

Sorry for the typos. Q2 should say I found we had to change him less, not touching!

We tried the size 4+

Loulou0615 · 23/03/2015 10:45

For a value product, I found these to be good quality compared with other own brand nappies. I am using pampers size 2 at the moment and found that the mamia size 2 are smaller so unfortunately I have only tried a couple on the nappies as they were digging in to my lo's legs. I think they are good value for money, a well made product and I would recommend them to friends.

BossWitch · 23/03/2015 11:07

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?

Overall I'd say they were a good nappy. I like the design although the colours are very dark / strong, they show through fabric very easily. This isn't such a problem now as my dd is 10 months and wearing 'proper clothes' but I wouldn't have liked always seeing the nappy pattern through babygrows / sleepsuits when she was a newborn. They cope well with wee - no problems for the 12hour overnight stretch - but don't seem to be as good at absorbing liquid poo, it seems to just sit on the surface. My DH found that unsticking the tabs when opening up the nappy was quite hard to do one-handed, although I didn't really notice this.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?

They are good value for money, especially if you normally buy a premium nappy (eg pampers) in the smaller pack sizes. However I normally buy Pampers on offer from ASDA which brings the price down. Aldi's would still be cheaper but not by enough to warrant going out of my way to go to Aldi just to buy nappies when I can get Pampers delivered as part of my online grocery shop.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would definitely recommend they try them - particularly if they were using another supermarket brand.

Puddlet · 23/03/2015 11:33
  1. I liked the nappies very much. They worked well and the baby seemed very comfortable in them
  2. The price is good value.
  3. I would definitely recommend them to others
MTBMummy · 23/03/2015 13:04

Thank you for the chance to be a tester, we tested size 4 on our robust 11 month old DS

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?
They're a bit stiff at first look, and I first thought the lack of stretch in the tabs might cause issues with chubby DS, but they work well and seem to sit higher up on his back, which is definitely a good thing in my book. No leaks (unlike pampers) Overall I'm happy with them

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?
Exceptionally good value, and although we typically buy nappies in bulk when they're on special, these still work out significantly cheaper.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely, they fit well, don't leak and at that price are a big money saver

gemima27 · 23/03/2015 15:11

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?

I was really impressed. they didnt leak, had fun designs and lasted as well as other leading brands

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?

they are on par with other supermarket brands. if I go to Aldi I would now buy them.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I am impessed, I have no negative comments.
I shall now be making my first trip to an Aldi to try out more things.

Miaow1234 · 23/03/2015 15:24

Q1, they were soft to touch inside and out and lightweight. They haven't leaked at all which I have found with some other brands. No dodgy smell like pampers!
Q2. They are alittle cheaper, I've also seen them on offer which works out even better to other prices. I wouldn't go in aldi to purely get nappies but if I was doing a shop I would buy a few packs to keep me going.
Q3. Yes would recommend as they are better value and do what they are supposed to.

bearcub1 · 23/03/2015 15:32
  1. these are great value nappies that always deliver on performance. They are a great price. Reliable, no leaks, great price.

  2. great price for nappies, without compromising on quality.

  3. I have recommended these nappies to other mums and mums to be. I know several mums travel specifically to another town to be able to buy Aldi nappies.

Geneticsbunny · 23/03/2015 17:27

Q1. What was your overall impression of Aldi’s Mamia nappies? What, if anything, did you like and dislike about them?

They seem very similar to our normal brand. Bit stiffer but other than that no real difference. Much easier to find what size they are from looking at a nappy than pampers.

Q2. The RRP for Aldi’s Mamia nappies are above, do you think that this is good value for money? Do you think you’d use them again?

We have only ever used pampers in the last 5 years as when we tried to switch before we got too many leaky nappies but the mamia nappies have worked perfectly. Yes good value for money and yes I will be buying some next time I go to aldi.

Q3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Aldi’s Mamia nappies to friends and/or family with children using nappies? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I would recommend them. As good as pampers but significantly cheaper.
