AngelieMumsnet · 29/09/2014 14:53

This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters who are testing out the Weight Watchers programme.

Weight Watchers say: “With 50 years of success behind us we understand how to make losing weight simple, delicious and fun; but we also understand how challenging it can be when you’re facing it alone. Join us to lose weight, feel fantastic and achieve great things. You can follow our healthy eating plan completely online with support from our unique community, or benefit from attending our lively meetings, for personal coaching and weight loss guidance.”

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback once a week - we'd like your first impressions now and every week after that, we'll be posting some new questions for you to answer.

So, in terms of your first impressions...

~ Will you be going to meetings, following the plan online or a bit of both?
~ Why did you sign up to test out the Weight Watchers plan?
~ What sorts of foods do you think you'll be eating following the plan? Will it be a big change for you?

Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will receive a £100 Asda voucher, good luck!

Please note: your anonymous comments may be used by Weight Watchers on their website and other marketing materials.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Yes I'm struggling with portions too!
I had the correct portion size yesterday and ended up starving at bedtime.
This makes me wonder of sw is better for me.
I'm going to reduce the portions of carbs gradually to see if that helps.
Don't anticipate hives losses untill I can eat less but am eating very healthily and have had several comments on my skin looking good!

aturtlenamedmack · 03/10/2014 10:17

You've made the first week utterly horrendous.
The best thing about weight watchers is that it fits in well around day to day life. Nothing is off limits and you can either cook or eat convenience foods.
With your new first week, you have no choice but to cook from scratch, it is massively restrictive and leaves me craving food that I wouldn't be otherwise.
Luckily, I've used WW before, so I know what the diet will be like after this week, but if I didn't, I wouldn't be going back.

iwantgin · 03/10/2014 10:20

i haven't been weighing out anything - but am following Simple Start.

ihatethecold · 03/10/2014 10:20

I'm not doing the intro week, just the pro points.
I've found it quite easy.
I have weighed myself this morning and I've dropped 3lbs since Tuesday morning.

Ledkr · 03/10/2014 10:22

Are you weighing stuff? i hate I didn't do simple start either as far too restrictive.

iwantgin · 03/10/2014 10:22

Good work!!

I think I will start on the pro points next week. I like the Simple Start, but feel a bit out of control - as in I don't feel like I SHOULD be eating this or having that...

Counting and writing works for me.

ihatethecold · 03/10/2014 10:23

I like the plan because it really makes me think about what I'm eating. Instead of reaching for carbs when I'm tired, which I do a lot.

I've eaten more fruit and veg this week. I also haven't had that mid afternoon slump.

aturtlenamedmack · 03/10/2014 10:23

I wasn't given a choice. I'm really resenting it and feeling like I want to shake which ever weight watchers sadist came up with it.
This may just be diet rage though. I'm hangry!!!

iwantgin · 03/10/2014 10:24

To be honest - the Simple Start is mostly how I we eat here anyway. I do cook from scratch a lot. The only difference is that it's low fat. however, I believe in fat as it is filling so will be able to point that.

iwantgin · 03/10/2014 10:25

Agree a little turtle .

After class the consultant talked us newbies through the Simple Start - but didn't say anything about Propoints. Perhaps she thought it was overload ??

Anyway -I will bring it up this week and start on Pro Points.

ihatethecold · 03/10/2014 10:27

Hi ledkr,
I am only weighing things like cheese, I know how easy it is to underestimate how much I have of it.
I did weigh my porridge this morning also.
Mostly I'm eating eggs for breaky.
Cottage cheese for a snack
Salad or bean and tomato soup for lunch,
For dinner I've had baked butternut squash with chilli. Ww website recipe.

The chunky tomato and bean soup I got of ww website, it's actually very nice, I had to change a few of the veg to suit what I've got.

Has anyone else got any good recipes of the website?

iwantgin · 03/10/2014 10:30

I made a soup similar to the one in the simple start booklet. The spicy tomato and butternut squash soup. But i didn't have a butternut squash!

it was v nice - but VERY garlicky. I had it for lunch yesterday - and can still taste it this morning...

Not made anything else yet.

Ledkr · 03/10/2014 16:52

I could do with point free soup. Anyone got a recipe. I had a van today but it was 4 points, I'd tTher have used the points on a bread roll tbh.

ShyPhilosopher · 03/10/2014 17:28

Sorry, only just seen this thread Blush

Will you be going to meetings, following the plan online or a bit of both?
I'm trying both at first, to see which one suits me best. I have attended my first meeting already and was surprised just how supportive and motivating it was. I am also using the Smart Start app, to track my food intake & inspire me over what I can eat. Once I'm past Smart Start, I'll start using the standard Weight Watchers app too - it's just a bit too confusing for me at the mo.

Why did you sign up to test out the Weight Watchers plan?
I signed up for a multitude of reasons:

  • I am obese
  • I have a great deal of family members with diabetes
  • My blood pressure is so high, I now have to take blood pressure meds
  • I don't want to embarrass my kids
  • I think losing weight will help slightly with my depression, as it will boost my self confidence
  • I have lost weight before, without the help of somewhere like Weight Watchers, but I struggle to keep my motivation going & therefore regain the weight.

What sorts of foods do you think you'll be eating following the plan? Will it be a big change for you?
I know Weight Watchers advertise that you can eat any food with their diet, and I do love the idea of that versatility. I think knowing that nothing is prohibited, might stop cravings. Saying that, I really do want to permanently change my diet to healthier one. Not just for me, but to set an excellent example to my kids.

Prior to the Weight Watchers trial, I would eat out of boredom, or as a comfort when upset. I really want my brain to realise food is nourishment rather than an emotional fix & recognise when I feel full. I'm therefore glad that it will be a big change for me. Just the Simple Start (where you get to eat filling & healthy foods) has already had a positive impact on both me & the whole family. Turns out the kids love home made popcorn, which has only been flavoured with cinnamon! Instead of snacking on biscuits, I've found so many healthier alternatives.

ShyPhilosopher · 03/10/2014 17:31

Ledkr: if you sign into the Weight Watchers website, hover your cursor over "Food & Recipes" then select "Zero Heroes", there are a few zero point soup recipes there.

Ledkr · 03/10/2014 18:18

Thanks very much.
I've made a morrocan chicken dish tonight, with couscous which I just realised is pretty low points.
I'm going to spice it up with paprika, cumin, garlic and lime juice.
I'm using my weekly points on alcohol this weekend as I'm out with friends tomorrow.

ihatethecold · 03/10/2014 18:29

I've just had a steak salad.
Lots of veg with it.
It was bloody lovely.

Teladi · 03/10/2014 20:36

As you may have seen upthread aturtlenamedmack, I've also definitely had my hangry moments on Simple Start! I was almost chewing my arm off on Day 1.

I'm going to switch to ProPoints next week, as I believe I have probably been undereating on SS and I have health stuff that means I can't really do that. I need to find the balance between eating too much and too little. I think having a points amount to 'aim' for will help. £10 says I don't even lose weight this week either!! Grin

We also cook from scratch a lot but I've been finding SS/Filling and Healthy a bit too restrictive, especially since on balance, I don't believe my diet is particularly bad in general, I think I probably just need to stop the snack attacks / find alternatives.

It's nice to hear from everyone! I had the 'turkey burger with rice salad and salsa' off the website today for my tea. The turkey burger was really lovely I thought! Last night, by contrast, I had beans, poached egg and a sandwich thin and do you know what, that was really good too because I was tight for time and it felt like comfort food!

aturtlenamedmack · 03/10/2014 21:29

taldi I knew it couldn't just be me Grin
I cheated a bit for tea - I had a chicken wrap (wholemeal wrap, salad, skinny dressing) but I had a birdseye chicken chargrill instead of just chicken breast. On pro points it would have been perfect. Had chips made from spuds and oils spray which were lovely.
That and a boiled egg and ww soldiers for brekkie and I don't feel too hard done to.
Would definitely be under my points for the day!

ihatethecold · 04/10/2014 07:40

So. It's my dd11 birthday today.
I'm taking her and a friend into town then out to lunch.

Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm not wanting to eat refined carbs.
I know pizza express have the points online but I really don't want pizza.

dobedobedo · 04/10/2014 07:52

No idea ihate - could you get a jacket spud somewhere? Or steak/chicken salad?

I'm half way through week 2 and I've been doing propoints mostly this week. I've definitely eaten more than last week on simple start. Had a sneaky weigh on the scales and I seem to have lost a little more weight, but I won't know for sure until Tues (my weigh in day).

Am I right in thinking that a filling and healthy day is basically simple start, but with 49 points a week to spend on other stuff? So 7 pp of treats per day?

Since Tues I haven't even used any of the 49 treat points. Also what is with the exercise points? Are those extra points we can eat or what?

JustASimpleSpongeCake · 04/10/2014 07:59

Their superfood salad is really nice. And enormous. Grin

ihatethecold · 04/10/2014 10:47

I'm in carluccios.
I'm having scrambled eggs with mushrooms.
It's just arrived and the portion size is much smaller than normal Shock

iwantgin · 04/10/2014 10:51

Boo hiss to smaller portions Ihate !!

I was out for dinner last night with friends.

I offered to drive - so no drinking. (I had one glass of prosecco pre dinner).

It was quite tricky to choose a dish - in the end I went for Coq Au Vin - and had some steamed veggies and a small amount of boulangere potatoes (v small amount).

I refused the fancy pants bread offered pre-meal, and didn't have dessert.

Still had a great time - without over doing the food and getting drunk.

ihatethecold · 04/10/2014 15:21

Well done gin.
I actually complained about the food to the manager.
He took my dd food of the bill and also have her a free muffin.
I've just got in and had 5 oatcakes with cottage cheese.
