Dyson Cinetic™ review thread - The only vacuum that never loses suction is put to the MN test NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 19/02/2014 14:28

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been putting the Dyson Cinetic DC54 vacuum cleaner through its paces. During development, Dyson tested the machine for over 9,000 hours and now MNers are putting it to the test.

Here’s what Dyson say: “Dyson’s Cinetic DC54 is an exciting step forward for Dyson’s engineering team. Thanks to a clever new development in cyclone technology, it is the only vacuum which has no bags to buy, no filters to maintain, and won’t lose suction in its lifetime.

Many other vacuum cleaners rely on clogging vacuum cleaner bags or use inefficient cyclones which do a bad job of separating dust and dirt from the airflow. This means the filters end up doing the hard work and end up clogging, leading to a loss of suction.

The Dyson Cinetic DC54 is different. It uses 54 cyclones across two tiers, each with an oscillating tip.

Smaller cyclones generate higher centrifugal forces and capture smaller particles. But the tighter the cyclone, the more likely it is to block. So Dyson engineers have created cyclones with flexible tips at the end. So the dust doesn’t ever block. The cyclones are so efficient there is no need to wash the filter.”

Over the next couple of weeks, testers will be given a new weekly challenge to put the Dyson Cinetic DC54 through its paces!

Challenge 1: Speed
Dry mud, dog hair, post-breakfast crumbs – everyday mess quickly builds up. Busy lifestyles mean people are short on time and need a machine capable of speedy cleaning. It requires a machine engineered for tight turns and easy cleaning across multiple floor types.

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic DC54 when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

Dust and household nasties have a habit of hiding away in hard to reach places. Like the little bit of dust caught between the fridge and the washing machine; the loose change that lives down the back of the sofa; the crumbs caught behind the car seat; and the dust that sits on the skirting boards. We want to know where the messiest and dirtiest hidden spots of your home are.

Your challenge: After cleaning each room – and the car if you have one - let us know where the hidden dust lives and how you tackled it – which accessories did you use?

Challenge 3: How long does it last

It can be frustrating when a vacuum cleaner clogs and loses suction. Good technology should deliver constant performance and make life easier.

How does the Dyson Cinetic DC54 perform in your house? Does it suck up dust and dirt in the same way on day one as it does weeks, months and years later?

Your challenge: Pop back in to the thread and let us know how you’re getting on with your Dyson Cinetic DC54 over the next few months. Without the need to change vacuum bags or wash filters, is cleaning any easier or is it the same as before? Has the Dyson Cinetic DC54 delivered constant suction or not?

Below are some other questions we’d like you to answer but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic DC54?
  2. How did your Dyson Cinetic DC54 compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?
  3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic DC54 to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?
  4. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic DC54?

We’d love it if you could also post a review of your Dyson Cinetic DC54 on the Mumsnet review page.

If you have any before and after photos we’d love to see these too, so please post them on this thread.

Non-testers: Fancy owning your own Dyson Cinetic DC54? Dyson are currently running a competition with Mumsnet and giving away another Dyson Cinetic DC54. To enter the competition click here.

LetItBeMe - you mentioned 2 things that I think the Dyson has thought of for you/us:

  • 'rake it out with my hands' - there is a sort of spatula-type thing attached to the canister, that is removable, and is so we don't have to stick out hands into the grot.
  • 'you can't vary the suction power' - have you found the suction release trigger? It's on the handle of the hose. You squeeze it, and it cuts the suction right down.

I've explained this really badly, so look at the A4 'Operating Manual', top of P5.

im actually going to get up and look even though it's my lie in day!

so now I know that you can vary the suction, clean out the canister and that the tools actually go on the wand not the hose.
Thankyou Hazel. #imnowlovingthedysontoo

I haven't needed to empty the canister more than once, perhaps my house is cleaner than I imagined! Speed clean coming up after the weekend.

Sorry I'm late to come in with my feedback. But, we've been having some teething issues. Something to do with my stupidity I suspect... But, I can't get it to suck. It seems to blow! does that make sense? So, instead of sucking up all the dirt and crumbs of the floor, it blows them around. Has anybody else had that problem? I've read the assembly instructions over and over again and they're pretty basic so I don't know what I could have done wrong... I'm hoping for help on here. So, if anybody has any suggestions please let me know. But, the house has got really bad so our old hoover is going to have to come out of retirement.

Belo, I suspect you have wooden floors like me...I am having the same issue. I rang the Dyson helpline and they are sending out a different hoover head for me to try.

I will post full feedback shortly and repost when I get my new head to test.

Yes, wooden floors (and polished concrete). Will make a call tomorrow! Did you explain that you were part of a mumsnet trial when you called?

Here is my first thoughts. Thrilled to have my hands on the dyson. So thank you also!

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

The Dyson was much lighter than I expected. It went together really easily and I am pleased with the size of it. Which is compact and ideal to store out of the way. There are lots of different attachments for different jobs.
  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

There is no comparison. I like seeing how much dirt has been picked up. We have cream bedroom carpet and it actually looks like new again. It is a little louder than my hoover but I don't care about that!.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

I have already mentioned it and said what a good job it does. For anyone with animals or asthma (like my daughter) i would pay this price if it really helped. Doing this review has shown me that it is worth it. My husband had a noticeable wheeze whenever we hoovered yet it doesn't happen with thid dyson.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

I didnt realise my home had so much dirt in it!

Hi all - thanks for all your feedback so far! In response to those of you who are struggling to add pictures, if you're using MN on your mobile or tablet, unfortunately we haven't yet enabled a feature for pictures to be uploaded (though it is a work in progress!). However, if you're on your desktop then you should be able to add pictures at the bottom of the comment box where you can choose the image files you'd like to upload. Hope this helps and is clear!

One week's worth? Ha, that is NOTHING!

This is a couple of room's worth. Blush

Am sure that I ought not to be sharing the evidence of my slatternly ways / my clearly crap other hoover, but hey ho. I love the Dyson so very much still - it really is picking up much more grot, more quickly. And I assume that the '54 cyclones across two tiers, each with an oscillating tip' are working as there is no dusty smell now when I vacuum - it all stays within the Dyson, and nothing clogs.

And double Blush Blush that I wrongly placed an apostrophe.
The horror!

That's okay HazeltheMcwitch, I just omitted the apostrophe altogether, ironic when I bought a book on grammar this morning!

My house is obviously cleaner than I think, but I have to say when I go to some of my colleagues houses, I am Shock at their mess Blush

This debris was my bedroom alone! I'm mortified! Whilst I don't hoover that often I had no idea it was this bad.
I hoover every few weeks and dust pretty regularly. The state of the canister shows how much dust its collecting. This is after a week of use.

That should say in respect of the carpets, I hoover downstairs hard floors most days, sometimes twice a day!

Hi all,
Well after a weekend of Dyson testing (and an afternoon in A&E) I've got my review head on and will post all later when I'm on my laptop so can hopefully do pictures too.
Have to say that I am rather impressed so far, it's done a lot better than I thought that it would!

3princes - I hope that the A&E and the Dyson are in no way related?
Hope all ok...
