Dyson Cinetic™ review thread - The only vacuum that never loses suction is put to the MN test NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been putting the Dyson Cinetic DC54 vacuum cleaner through its paces. During development, Dyson tested the machine for over 9,000 hours and now MNers are putting it to the test.

Here’s what Dyson say: “Dyson’s Cinetic DC54 is an exciting step forward for Dyson’s engineering team. Thanks to a clever new development in cyclone technology, it is the only vacuum which has no bags to buy, no filters to maintain, and won’t lose suction in its lifetime.

Many other vacuum cleaners rely on clogging vacuum cleaner bags or use inefficient cyclones which do a bad job of separating dust and dirt from the airflow. This means the filters end up doing the hard work and end up clogging, leading to a loss of suction.

The Dyson Cinetic DC54 is different. It uses 54 cyclones across two tiers, each with an oscillating tip.

Smaller cyclones generate higher centrifugal forces and capture smaller particles. But the tighter the cyclone, the more likely it is to block. So Dyson engineers have created cyclones with flexible tips at the end. So the dust doesn’t ever block. The cyclones are so efficient there is no need to wash the filter.”

Over the next couple of weeks, testers will be given a new weekly challenge to put the Dyson Cinetic DC54 through its paces!

Challenge 1: Speed
Dry mud, dog hair, post-breakfast crumbs – everyday mess quickly builds up. Busy lifestyles mean people are short on time and need a machine capable of speedy cleaning. It requires a machine engineered for tight turns and easy cleaning across multiple floor types.

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic DC54 when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

Dust and household nasties have a habit of hiding away in hard to reach places. Like the little bit of dust caught between the fridge and the washing machine; the loose change that lives down the back of the sofa; the crumbs caught behind the car seat; and the dust that sits on the skirting boards. We want to know where the messiest and dirtiest hidden spots of your home are.

Your challenge: After cleaning each room – and the car if you have one - let us know where the hidden dust lives and how you tackled it – which accessories did you use?

It can be frustrating when a vacuum cleaner clogs and loses suction. Good technology should deliver constant performance and make life easier.

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

This is the rug our heavy duty running machine folds down onto iyswim. You can just see the feet at the top of the photo, so now the running machine is folded upright I used the small tangle free head, with opposing brushes.

The tangle brush works very well on the mattresses, especially when the cats have sneaked in for a nap unnoticed. Of course the cat hair they leave behind can get everywhere. No longer a problem, as a quick hoover whilst changing sheets is all I need to do.

I've used the Dyson on the sofas (it easily picked up all the croissant bits and raisins that my son dropped - using the small brush head), in the utility room which I've not vacuumed in for years due to all the junk in there. After only 5 minutes, all visible dust was gone around everything that's in there

Yesterday a whole load of bits fell out of my son's wellies all over the hall carpet. Only took about 2 minutes to get out the Dyson, plug in and hoover them up. Brilliant. I definitely find it easier to do quick jobs whereas with the old Henry, I had to make an effort to get it out and really want to do cleaning as it was really heavy.

I do like that sevreal of the attachments will hook onto 'stick' part (nothing like knowing the technical parts of a vacuum!). Means I don't have to go searching for them round the house.

I've now vacuumed by car for the first time since getting it. front and back footwells/seats/car seat took 5 minutes tops. I used the small opposing rotating head, then switched to the cranny head to get in the car seats (didn't take much at all to get all the random food crumbs up - the car seat looks like new).
I'm really impressed with how quick and easy it was. Again though, I had to move the car to right by the front door so I could reach the cord out without getting a long extension lead.

Challenge 2 Hide and seek

Set out to get all the nooks and crannies cleaned this weekend. Dust, dirt, cat hairs and crumbs collect in the spaces between the carpets and the skirting boards. The ideal tool for these was the small brush attached to the pointy nozzle thing. The brush was great for sweeping out all the muck and the vacuum grabbed it perfectly. As it was doing such a fine job I did all the rooms in the house and the stairs. It's also a great tool for doing the settees which for some reason the kids seem is the ideal place to eat. Probably because THEN they can watch TV at the same time.

What i really like about the larger heads for the cleaner is that if you are moving from carpet to lino or laminate flooring the trigger can be pulled to lessen the suction power rather than having to keep changing ends because of the floor changing. All this makes the cleaning job speedier and less of a chore.Saying that though actually changing the various heads is very quick and simple anyway. Previous vacuums I have had have ended up with broken attachments whilst this Dyson seems much better designed and durable. Adding and removing the attachments is really easy with the release mechanisms. Other types have been particularly awkward to put on and remove wheras this system is FAR better.

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

DH decided to use the long thin tool with a brush down the end to try and get all of the dust out from behind the radiators. The brush at the end of the long thin pole was great for knocking all the dust down through the radiator onto the floor, but not brilliant at sucking it up. It just didn't seem to have enough suction. So, we used it as a brush, and then hoovered the the floor with the flat head (still not getting on with the rotating brush head). He also used it to clean out the run tracks for our sliding doors. They always get full of small bits of dust/rubbish. It was great for that. But, once again, he went over it with the flat head afterwards.

DH also emptied out the hoover (nothing like a high tech looking gadget to get my husband involved in the housework!) I had done it previously and found it quite hard to remove the drum. He also found it quite hard.

Popping back to thread* to say that I am still loving the Dyson! I still find that I am getting loads more grot than I used to, but I think it is starting to reduce a bit - and I fully trust that that is as my house is finally getting cleaner, not due to any issues with the machine - the suction is still as strong as it was on Day 1. I still find I need to empty the canister quite often, but I am ok with that as I do have lots of pets, young muddy kids etc, and I do actually like to feel that I am removing dirt from the house!

I find that the tools that I use most are the big head and the smaller turbo head (with the 2 brushes), the hard floor tool and the crevice. I don't use the stair tool that much, as I use the small brush head for them.

I had to clear my long thick hair from the brush bar on the big head tool the other day. I used to dread this task, snipping away with my nail scissors... But this was so so easy! The pictorial instructions were super-simple to understand, you just unlock the end, slide out the brush, pick off the hair (comes off easily) and then replace and lock. It took about 90 secs. This, along with the non-clogging filters, and resultant lack of burning dust smell, is possibly my favourite thing about the Dyson.

MN and Dyson, I am still very very grateful for the chance to take part in this trial. I also love the fact that you have asked us to come back in months and report - this is what I look for in a review - ie once a product has lost its initial novelty, is it still performing?

Challenge 3 - Come back and tell you what I think! Well it is good, but I can't say it is hugely better than the Miele or the Sebo when, I could have 2 of each of those for the price.

I have seen the ads on TV, James states, never looses suction in it's lifetime. What is the expected life time, my personal experience of a Dyson life time is less than 6 months. My sego is 7 years old and the Miele is at least 5, I was quite content with them, but really glass they I had the opportunity to test it. It was fun and this is the best picture - DH with it, first and only time he has used a vacuum cleaner!

The cat bought a mouse in and let it go in his office, he pulled everything out trying to catch it, and discovered a lifetime of dust, hair and mouse poo, gone in a flash!

I finally have five minutes to sit and write my reviews for the challenges. So sorry it's so late!
Things have been crazy busy around here recently and doing this has unfortunately never reached the top of the list of things to do but DH has rather fallen in love with the Cinetic and has just insisted I sit down and get on as "There's no way we're giving it back!"

1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic DC54?
Loved the look and the feel of it initially. Less impressed with the lack of written instructions though. As a total Dyson virgin, I didn't have a clue what all the bits were for or how they fitted together. Thankfully, I had this thread to refer to so that helped a lot!
2. How did your Dyson Cinetic DC54 compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?
DH initially reported that it was 'rubbish' as he'd had to empty the box after just one room. Then we realised it was because the Dyson had picked up years worth of dust and hair that our old vacuums hadn't touched. Boak!
3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic DC54 to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?
If I thought they had a spare £500 floating around, i'd recommend it. It is expensive and we could never have afforded it without this review but it s fabulous so it's probably reasonable value.
4. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic DC54?
Better instructions would be marvellous. Also, the whizzy attachment didn't appear to work at first and seemed to just spit dust out which was a total PITA. DH finally worked out that it was clogged and so when he unclogged it, it worked fine.

Challenge 1: Speed

When I initially tried to do this challenge it took ages. Partly because I didn't have a clue what all the bits and bobs were for, partly because I had to keep stopping to empty it as it was picking up years worth of disgustingness that our other vacuums had missed and partly because, once i'd realised how good it was, I wanted to do a really thorough job!

So, i'd say it takes longer than my old vacuum but only because I was so enthusiastic about its capabilities that I wanted to vacuum everything!!

I did find that my pre-vacuum dusting took less time though as I used the thin attachment with the soft brush head to do the dusting which pleased me greatly! Simple pleasures and all!

This was an easy challenge as there are many dark and disgusting crevices needing a good vacuum in our house
I started with the car - the footwells and between the seats were particularly gross although the whole car was a disgrace with bits of food, hair and hay everywhere. I'm pretty ashamed!
I found the best attachments were the thin end with the soft brush and the small flat bit with the velvety strip. (if there'd been written instructions included, I'm sure i'd have known the proper names for these attachments!)
The Dyson did a great job but there was still some bits stuck in the carpets so it wasn't perfect which is what I was hoping for

Report back almost a month later. This morning it took 8 minutes to do the downstairs of our house (hall, kitchen, living room and playroom). Just the visible bits, but still a lot speedier than our old Henry would have taken. I like that I can raise up the large attachment from the carpet when it sucks too hard to push it.

Sometimes if I'm using that attachment, it blows rather than sucks large bits, but it's easy enough to take my time and get them the second attempt.

I'm still having to empty the cyclinder quickly which is annoying because I'm lazy, but it's great (and embarrassing) that I'm still getting lots of dust and bits picked up that I wouldn't have done with our old vacuum.

I have still have never lost suction. Both my husband and I still love it. Infact whenever we have visitors my husband gets it out to show them as he loves it so much. The amount of stuff it gets up is amazing although it is reducing the more we hoover. We have had no problem with filters getting blocked. So far we are completely in love with this Hoover.

I bought a Dyson Cinetic today - traded in my 10 year old Dyson upright so got £100 off at Curry's. The suction is great and the tool attachments really good but I don't like the way it empties - as someone has already said you need 3 hands. Fluff and dust gets stuck and I had to use my fingers to release it - which is not what I expect to do with such an expensive machine! Interestingly it says not to vacuum dust from a drill - so what are you supposed to use to clean up the dust? Also struggling to register the machine online which is why I am having a bit of a moan here and not to Dyson.

Just adding a 'down-the-line' feedback comment. Enjoying using it although it's a bit of a storage issue with all the extra gizmos! Also, the drum needs to be emptied more frequently than one would really like! A couple of cleans of the whole house and it's full. Billowing clouds of dust are not my thing when emptying it . It needs to be developed so that there's some way of transferring the dust/bits contents of the Dyson without this issue!

Otherwise, lovely sleek, smooth running mean machine for a family with pets!

I have to say we've just about given up and gone back to our old machine. Ours gives us no suction and just tends to blow the dirt about if we use the brush head. The other heads are not as good as our 7 year old Miele.

However, I hate to give up. Next time I have a day off work and no kids I'm going to phone the Dyson helpline and see what they have to say.

Revisit to Challenge 3 - How Long Does it Last?

It turns out that mine didn't even last five months with not a vast amount of use....

Yesterday, whilst vacuuming the hallway, there was suddenly a horrific burning electrical smell and my Dyson DC54 DIED.

The bin had been emptied the day before, the carpet had been vacuumed the day before and wasn't dirty (the ILs were coming for dinner, so was just having a quick whip round - as you do), and there was no blockage. All was normal until it just went kaput.

Guess my next test is going to be Dyson Customer Service. I was going to ring them anyway as my scraper snapped on Saturday whilst emptying it, but this is a whole other level of .

Currently unimpressed.
