Dyson Cinetic™ review thread - The only vacuum that never loses suction is put to the MN test NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 19/02/2014 14:28

This thread is for the 20 MNers who have been putting the Dyson Cinetic DC54 vacuum cleaner through its paces. During development, Dyson tested the machine for over 9,000 hours and now MNers are putting it to the test.

Here’s what Dyson say: “Dyson’s Cinetic DC54 is an exciting step forward for Dyson’s engineering team. Thanks to a clever new development in cyclone technology, it is the only vacuum which has no bags to buy, no filters to maintain, and won’t lose suction in its lifetime.

Many other vacuum cleaners rely on clogging vacuum cleaner bags or use inefficient cyclones which do a bad job of separating dust and dirt from the airflow. This means the filters end up doing the hard work and end up clogging, leading to a loss of suction.

The Dyson Cinetic DC54 is different. It uses 54 cyclones across two tiers, each with an oscillating tip.

Smaller cyclones generate higher centrifugal forces and capture smaller particles. But the tighter the cyclone, the more likely it is to block. So Dyson engineers have created cyclones with flexible tips at the end. So the dust doesn’t ever block. The cyclones are so efficient there is no need to wash the filter.”

Over the next couple of weeks, testers will be given a new weekly challenge to put the Dyson Cinetic DC54 through its paces!

Challenge 1: Speed
Dry mud, dog hair, post-breakfast crumbs – everyday mess quickly builds up. Busy lifestyles mean people are short on time and need a machine capable of speedy cleaning. It requires a machine engineered for tight turns and easy cleaning across multiple floor types.

Your challenge: How quickly can you clean your home from top to bottom with the Dyson Cinetic DC54 when you're pushed for time, for example when you need to leave for work, the family or a friend is due to pop over or the children come home from school?

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

Dust and household nasties have a habit of hiding away in hard to reach places. Like the little bit of dust caught between the fridge and the washing machine; the loose change that lives down the back of the sofa; the crumbs caught behind the car seat; and the dust that sits on the skirting boards. We want to know where the messiest and dirtiest hidden spots of your home are.

Your challenge: After cleaning each room – and the car if you have one - let us know where the hidden dust lives and how you tackled it – which accessories did you use?

Challenge 3: How long does it last

It can be frustrating when a vacuum cleaner clogs and loses suction. Good technology should deliver constant performance and make life easier.

How does the Dyson Cinetic DC54 perform in your house? Does it suck up dust and dirt in the same way on day one as it does weeks, months and years later?

Your challenge: Pop back in to the thread and let us know how you’re getting on with your Dyson Cinetic DC54 over the next few months. Without the need to change vacuum bags or wash filters, is cleaning any easier or is it the same as before? Has the Dyson Cinetic DC54 delivered constant suction or not?

Below are some other questions we’d like you to answer but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic DC54?
  2. How did your Dyson Cinetic DC54 compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?
  3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic DC54 to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?
  4. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic DC54?

We’d love it if you could also post a review of your Dyson Cinetic DC54 on the Mumsnet review page.

If you have any before and after photos we’d love to see these too, so please post them on this thread.

Babieseverywhere I've just phoned up from work as I didn't get a chance yesterday. They told me I need to phone again when I'm at home to run through some checks. No offer of a new attachment...

Did try it again though after you mentioned the wooden floors, and it seemed to work OK on upholstery. So, it could well be the head. But, isn't one of the selling points of this hoover is that it is supposed to work on all surfaces? It would be a bit of a nuisance if you have to change heads to go between carpet and hard flooring. I've temporarily gone back to my old Miele.

I'm having trouble with one of the attachments too! Just about done with challenge one- will post later if I get a chance!!

A quick top to bottom as sister arriving to stay, 30 mins, but I didn't do the bedrooms she won't go in, or rather she shouldn't but she is nosey! Great to run from floor to carpet and then floor, including the tile bathroom floors. Getting a little more used to handling it.

After reading this thread, I thought I would investigate buying a Dyson Cinetic and went along to my local (Paris) showroom. OMG DYSON you need to do something about your customer service in Paris. I have lived here for many years and thought I was hardened to the legendary Parisian levels of (non-existent) service but rarely have I been insulted as many times in so few sentences as I was this afternoon.

Hi I had an email earlier from MN saying there is another Dyson challenge! But where is it??? Probably being a bit dim...

I'm enjoying my Dyson but I don't want to do a big clean if the challenge wants me to try cleaning a very dirty room...

I found the brush on the crevice tool great for cleaning ds bigger toys and his hot wheels track! Gets in nicely around the ikea trofast storage too.

MNHQ Not sure what to do about the challenges. I've just come off the phone to Dyson and it sounds like my main head is faulty. I can get one of the other heads to work, but as it doesn't have the revolving brushes it's not going to be as effective, or as quick to use. They're sending me out a new brush which will take 5-7 working days to arrive. Should I wait to get that and be late with my challenges? Or, should I do the challenges with the other heads that I've got?

Belo, sorry about your problems, Dyson customer service would like to post the following,

"Hi Belo,

Thanks for sharing your feedback – that definitely doesn’t sound right! I’d like to get one of my colleagues to take you through some quick troubleshooting checks so we can pinpoint what’s happening here. Can you please email me directly at [email protected] with your full contact details? If you can also include the serial number that would be very helpful. You’ll find this printed on a white sticker on the underside of the machine.

Once I have this information I’ll be in touch as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Jack

we pulled out the stereo cabinet. so much fuss to move all the plugs and wires that we don't move it. however, dh was swapping something (geeky) around so he pulled it out. oh my. I used the long end with the little brush - at first without the brush down, then dropped it down for the corners and the skirting boards. this is the stuff the dyson is made for. And in a league of its own in comparison with our previous vacuums. I also did the corners in the porch, a harbour of all manner of bits, leaves, mud, dust, everything. all gone. my porch is clean! for that one I began with the hard floor attachment with the brush (it's tiled) and moved on to the long nozzle as before.

Will do challenge number two at the weekend, it will involve dh pulling the sofas out - I want to get at the spaghetti junction that is the computer / printer / phone charger cables next to the sofa.

Those of you that have done your review, what name did you do it under? Your real name, your MN name or another made up name??

Feel under pressure to come up with an original title for my review too....

I have just tried the crevice tool test on the car, whilst it cleans beautifully down the back of the leather seats, and in the seams, it fails dismally on the carpets. It normally takes me 15 mins to do my 7 seater tank, -(Mercedes GL500) after 15 minutes I gave up and resorted to the beaten up garage Henry. It couldn't get the pine needles out of the ribbed carpets, I was concerned about breaking the crevice tool as it is a bit flimsy for the job. I use the Henry one to BEAT the car mats clean in minutes. I found it very hard to manipulate in the car, the handle is too big and wide to go all the way down the seats, unless the crevice tool can comment directly to the hose with no handle piece?

The Dyson is far better for carpet/floors etc but not fiddly work.

Report
dysontrasher · 27/02/2014 11:22

Update, I have managed to fit the crevice tool to the hose directly, but the hose is too fat or too large a girth to hold comfortably in your hand Blush dirty mind whilst trying to vacuum.

Challenge 2: Hide and seek

Your challenge: After cleaning each room – and the car if you have one - let us know where the hidden dust lives and how you tackled it – which accessories did you use?

The worst dust was on top of the (too big) lamp shade in the stairwell. It is too high to reach so I used the crevice tool on the end of the pole at furthest extent. However I think I should have lessened the suction because I managed to 'suck' the lampshade off the light fitting, and now have a bare bulb. No more dust though as it was easier to reach once it bounced down the stairs! Had to do the stairs too as it left dust all down them.

I haven't done the car which is filthy as I am afraid of trashing the Dyson. The car is full of little stones which get stuck in muddy football boots as the boys walk back from training over some gravel. I think these would count as rubble as might crack the plastic canister as they whirl around?

Additional comments as I continue to use the Cinetic:

Emptying it is really difficult. It suggests using a plastic bag, but I can't see how - my supermarket carriers are not big enough to take the opened lid and the canister so I can't make a seal around the canister to stop the dust going everywhere. Yesterday I just emptied it straight into the dustbin and a gust of wind took all the dust straight out and over the garden! I need 3 hands really - one to hold canister, one to hold lid open and one to scrape. Will have to experiment to find out the best way to do this.

I did the whole house yesterday and even having used the Cinetic several times already I had to empty 3 times to get round my (not very big) house. I don't think the canister takes enough stuff for a messy household like mine - the dog hair in the sitting room daily fills it up.

cleaning out the car

Well I must agree with the previous poster, this is not going to win the Dyson any points I'm afraid.
The suction through the crevice tool was weak, it didn't pick up the bits.
The spinning little head was great on the mats out of the car but too cumbersome to manoeuvre inside the foot well.
The crevice tool is too long to use the dusting bit on the dash although it was good in the centre console pocket bits/cup holder etc.
The lead is also too short for my drive/ socket set up without digging the extension lead out of the garage.
Emptying it is still a challenge even with the spatula and its capacity is so small it irritates me.
Overall, disappointing for such an expensive machine.

Challenge 2 hide and seek
I have found the crevice tool to be perfect for all of the crumbs that hide down the sides of the sofa cushions, also my pet hate which is down the sides of the washing machine and cooker , without fail there is always yucky unidentifiable objects and I hate this job but the Dyson picked them up no problem.
I also found the Dyson hose to be great for under the beds where huge amounts of fluff and hair gather weekly.
I need to give my car a good clean but am a bit apprehensive to Dyson it incase the little stones and grit on the floor damage it- May need to return to my old cheapy vacuum for that job although I d love it to have a really thorough clean I don't think I want to take the risk.

Challenge two : hide and seek

Pros and cons with the Dyson in this challenge! I agree with the PP that the crevice tool is too wide to fit down the sides of my cooker/washing machine/fridge where the true dirt lurks. But it's great for running along the top of curtain poles and under furniture. The suction means all sorts of crud came out from under the computer cupboard! I find it's good for cleaning round the feet of our kitchen stools where the dog hair accumulates.
I didn't get on that well cleaning the car tbh. I have a small 3door Peugeot and just couldn't get into all the nooks and crannies, although the boot has come up nicely. Dh is going to have a go at the estate car and see how he gets on.

I'll ppst back when I have more to say!

Oooh! Found you all at last! I couldn't find the thread and have only just received Challenge 2 - I didn't see hide nor hair of Challenge 1.... I have gathered what I am supposed to do from this thread though.

Our last vacuum a Miele Cat and Dog was dying so I was very excited to trial the Dyson Cinetic. It has been fab in almost every aspect so far. In answer to the questions..

  1. What was your overall first impression of Dyson Cinetic?

The box is surprisingly small. I thought it was going to be a big, heavy monster of a machine, but not in all, it fitted in a compact box. As you know Dyson were kind enough to deliver my vacuum but if I had to carry this from a shop to my car for example, it would have been quite manageable.
The packaging was impressively well designed and felt well made (although my mind is still unsure whether I would prefer to save a few pennies on the packaging or if I had paid for my Dyson, satisfaction that if the packaging was of great design and excellent quality and it was designed to be thrown away, then my product itself would be fabulous).
When put together - very straightforward - the vacuum itself looks great with the satisfying transparent chamber that collect our crud. It looked like it was going to be terribly noisy but a flick of the switch and no - just normal expected noise. A pleasant surprise again

  1. How did your Dyson Cinetic compare against your usual vacuum cleaner?

The Dyson compares favourably to our dying Miele. It is much, much quicker and much, much more efficient, and the first time it had a tough challenge as I can now see how hard it had to work to get everything Miele left behind, But very impressively effective with just one sweep of the head. This has made it nice and quick for Challenge 1.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Dyson Cinetic to your friends/family/other Mumsnetters? If so, why? If not, why not?

The vacuum IS impressive but it has an impressive price tag too so I am not sure if I would recommend anyone to pay such a large sum for a vacuum. It is early days yet on such a large payment. It seems to struggle with stray cat litter too. Perhaps this is too close in nature to ash and building rubble?

  1. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about your experience with the Dyson Cinetic?

DH said that he found the handle a bit uncomfortable after he cleaner a particular large rug, but it has not been an issue for me. I have noticed I clean with quite a loose, open hand - perhaps he is a 'gripper', I will encourage him to have another go, watch and report back.
The head is impressively agile. It has no trouble working around the kitchen table with the chairs pushed in, despite there being a forest of legs to work around - all speeding up the job. I know nooks and crannies are coming up in Challenge 2 but we were delighted to use one of the attachments to rescue a Tupperware lid which had fallen down the side of the cooker months ago, so we had released that and got all the other debris out from down there too - a big celebration! Stair tool is good and again, looks impressively well designed. The tools on the stalk don't really get in my way so happy to have them living there, ready to go when required.

Challenge 1 Top to Bottom speed Challenge
Dyson and I completed this challenge in 32 minutes, we have 4 bedrooms, 2 receptions kitchen, bathrooms, mostly carpet with some (wet rooms) in lino. Being able to travel from carpet to lino and back again saves faff and time, a big bonus. I was delayed by it struggling with more concentrated cat litter areas. It is happy with stray bits on the carpet but didn't like more dense areas on the bathroom lino floor. A bit disappointing. I am wondering if this is what has killed my Miele. Perhaps I need a new strategy for stray cat litter particles....?

I should have added that the head seems to be managing admirably with the fur from our two house Persians and the long hair from my daughter and me. Miele has struggled with this for a long time, I frequently had to cut out the hair and fur mixture from the bristles to free up the bristles to do their work, but this head design seems to be managing much more successfully - no scissors required so far....
