Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

Thanks to this thread I want Guinea Pigs now!
Is there a good website that anyone can recommend which will give advice on how to care for them properly.

I literally googled yesterday 'what are the cheapest pets' (broke but wanting company) and guinea pigs came up on top :-)

They might be cheaper than most pets, but with pellets, veggies, different types of hay, bedding, enrichment toys (eg willow tubes and more things they can eat) vets bills etc, last time I checked it averaged £40 a month (3 pigs). It'll be cheaper using fleece bedding, but then you've got the never ending cycle of washing to deal with and a washing machine that smells of vinegar. I don't want to put anyone off piggies as they are wonderful pets, but I was surprised when I started totting everything up. We do use more expensive bedding because it absorbs more smells (ours live in the lounge). And we could get more forage and less veg. So I know we could make it cheaper, and it is certainly still cheaper than many other pets! But I still wouldn't consider them cheap. They are extremely cute and lovely, though so do go for it if you can Smile

i don't spend that on my own food and bedding :-)
Maybe if I'm ever working again, I can do it then.
Quite won over by everyone on this thread!

Needhelp101 · 27/02/2024 16:44

Am I the only person that uses newspaper for bedding? And masses of hay, obviously.
It's not very absorbent so you do need to change it every couple of days but it's fine for composting.
And yes, more pics please!

That could have been bumped up by vets bills, to be fair. One needed an op last year and we always have older pigs so maybe more health concerns.

TriceratopsRocks · 27/02/2024 17:01

Because ours live in the main lounge, we use Aubiose. Really good but not cheap. Hence I know we could make it cheaper. But I am prioritising the least smell and easiest cleaning routine!

gingeristhenewblack43 · 27/02/2024 19:40

Our Pancake chilling out this eve, just before I took the photo she had her head turned on the side and was snoozing. But as soon as I approach Pancake and Coco are on alert.

I'm the keeper of the food and the picker upperer of the guinea pigs so they know it's one or the other if I approach.

I don't do the cuddles and strokes any more as I'm allergic. That's DD's job. If she approaches the cage the run to her as she never picks them up.

ShakespearesMonkeys · 27/02/2024 20:02

I’d say mine cost £25 a month for food and bedding. The cost has gone up loads recently. In the summer they go in the garden in the daytime and eat plenty of grass, they have leftover greens too.

Still, a lot cheaper than cats and dogs.

I reckon those guinea pig babies are all grown up and left home already…

Blacksheepcat · 27/02/2024 20:05

I miss my Guinea pigs but I have to warn you they take a lot of looking after.
I used sawdust and lots of hay in the hutch… a big hutch that we built for them with a separate bedroom. I refreshed the sawdust daily and did a big deep clean once a week. I had to bathe the ‘skirts’ of my long haired girl every couple of days (to wash out the urine smell) and brush and comb her tangles. I clipped their nails regularly. I had a run to put them out on the grass in the garden for a run around in the summer (daytime only). A variety of fresh veg daily alongside their dry Guinea pig food. They loved nettles and dandelion leaves (so that bit was free). Going away on holiday meant finding someone to not only feed them but someone that was willing and capable of cleaning out the whole hutch. And they need lots of handling and attention as they are very sociable. Never have one Guinea pig on its own!! They are more work than a cat for sure. If you’re ok with that, they are the best pets! The excited squeals they give you when they see you coming melt your heart.

Ahhhh bless him , living his best life .
I love it how guineas keep their rump in the hidey house for protection but their faces outside just in case you wander past with parsley or some celery leaves .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/02/2024 21:24

Ours had a wooden playhouse that DH adapted to a FortKnox Style PigHouse .

When DD and I walked down the garden, the noise . They must've heard our voices , but for such vunerable animals they didn't hide .

They seemed to think missing a meal was a bigger risk to them that making anything aware of them

They had massive rabbit runs that we put black fitted bedsheets on for shade .

They were Spoiled
And much harder work than the cats we have now (though much friendlier )

NCTDN · 27/02/2024 22:17

I hope the piglets are ok.

FlyingPandas · 27/02/2024 22:24

Aww, gorgeous piggy pics!

Here's one of mine - our ginger girl (who is very similar to OP's aunty pig) taking charge of the parsley rations and showing her new abyssinian baby companions how it's done i.e. get right INTO the bowl, don't just hover at the edge! Needless to say they learned their lesson fast Grin

Baby abys are now easily as big as ginger pig (amazing how fast they grow), extremely vocal, very enthusiastic and still ridiculously cute. I've never know pigs to popcorn around with quite so much excitement when the night's hay ration is dished out!

Hope you and your little guinea pig family are doing well, @InAPickle12345

Some really lovely GP pics on this thread :-)

Windydaysandwetnights · 28/02/2024 19:35

Anyone think op's piggies have taken to fame so well they aren't giving anymore pics to the fans??
Maybe one needs to be renamed Beyoncé??

AdamRyan · 28/02/2024 22:12

I hope they are OK. GPs are rather prone to sudden death ime Sad

gingeristhenewblack43 · 03/03/2024 11:48

Poor little thing! What a cruel thing to do to a defenceless animal. I hope Discopig has a happy adoption.
