Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

I really wouldn't bother taking her to the vets if she's otherwise fit and well. The stress and unnecessary handling (you want to be handling as little as possible now) will outweigh any benefit of taking her.

Really? A few PPs have said this now, she is a healthy little girl and doesn't seem to be in any distress. Should I cancel the vet appointment do you think?

This happened to one of the guinea pigs I got when I was a teenagers.

If you lift her up and place your ear on her side you can hear the babies squeaking inside.
The babies were adorable, mine had 2

JDJT · 10/02/2024 21:12

I would cancel. Never took any of mine to the vets and I had 6 healthy litters from 6 mums! Vets aren't generally great with guinea pigs anyway (they know the basics, but there's nothing that will benefit her from taking her)

When this happened to me we separate the 2 adult females before the birth and I wish we hadn't because the one who wasn't pregnant got lonely.

I have built 2 cages now from the big C+C cage and have them beside each other so hopefully they won't be lonely.

The funny thing is, I reckon my older girl would have been perfectly happy on her own when she lost her cage mate. It was me and my own worries telling myself she had to have a friend and now look what's happened 🙈😂

Edited

I do have a specialist exotic vet that I take my girls to but maybe I won't bother so, I'm sure I can call Monday morning and cancel.

If she were mine I wouldn't take her to the vets. It'll be distressing & pointless. Your average vet practice isn't any good for the small animals, you need a species vets & guinea pigs are good at this whole birthing, looking after their young.

id put your original back in with her. Unless you see any bad behaviour, she'll most likely be a comfort & help to the young one.

youve had her 55 days, you must have at least one photo of them! Please!!

FabFebHalfTerm · 10/02/2024 21:18

It's good you already have a specialist vet, but yeah I'd still cancel the appointment.

JDJT · 10/02/2024 21:21

Agreed, there's certainly no reason for the girls to be separated, unless they are fighting or something (not common with females)

Oh, I do have photos! Here's a few from when we first brought her home 🥰

My guinea pig as a child was purchased pregnant and we had two little piglets. Unfortunately as mum was just a baby herself, she was really unwell after the birth and eventually got very weak and dehydrated and she didn’t make it.

marmite and cookie the babies lived very long lives.

Here's her 'shame shot' we took last night when the pregnancy realisation dawned on us 🙈😂

They do have a go at each other, and the little one has bitten my older girl twice. I was regretting not just leaving my older girl on her own tbh because she would be happy on her own I think. But maybe the baby has just been cranky and hormonal because of the pregnancy?

She looks huge compared to your original one (and not meaning the belly😁!) How old is the other one roughly?

WarningOfGails · 10/02/2024 21:27

They are very noticeable when pregnant as they look like pears! We’ve had 3 litters… never separated the mother from the other adults and it all went well.

InAPickle12345 · 10/02/2024 21:28

Here's my beautiful girl I lost just before Xmas, so pretty and silly, just an adorable little girl, still miss her 😢

Ignore me - I realise now the smaller one is the pregnant one!

InAPickle12345 · 10/02/2024 21:37

@JDJT haha, no problem. My other girl is 4.5 years now. She (older girl) is actually absolutely enormous! She unfortunately lost the use of her back legs out of the blue about 2 years ago, regained the use of one, but is now disabled and not able to get about as quickly so has piled on the pounds. She's perfectly happy and healthy otherwise though, just a huge chonky bish! Photo of her fat bottom attached 😂

Aww, she's very round, but in a good way😄 love a healthy chunky piggy!

She's a monster 😂 I actually had a thread on here about her weight and how much I should be concerned about it, considering she has a disability. Since then I've pulled back on the kibble a bit but the vet is happy with her, said she is obviously very overweight and to try avoid her getting much bigger but that she's relatively healthy and given she only has a few more years, I want her to be happy so the odd treat is okay I think 😊

I know right, her little face and arms outstretched 😂 I think you can see what looks like a baby to the side of her tummy as well. Can't believe it took me until last night to realise she was pregnant, I just thought she was growing super quick and she still looks tiny in comparison to my other monster pig, I feel like a right fool 🤦‍♀️
