Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

I read your thread from start to finish for the first time last night and I was entranced! The baby Guinea pigs are SO lovely. I know very little about Guinea pigs - my experience with small animals is confined to hamsters, and the litters my hammies had when I was young. When I saw the size of your pregnant mummy piggy as I was reading the thread, I wrongly assumed that she would have five or six babies and I was really surprised to see how relatively big the babies were when they were born and that she only had three! I'm wishing that I'd got a couple for my daughter when she had her first pet rather than a hamster as they are so cute.

Well this has just been a very lovely read and made me all gooey inside & now wondering how I can convince DH that we need to add some GP's to our menagerie!!😍

Not wanting to lower the tone but as a Pig Slave you get bloody obsessed by their pooh !
Are they firm and losenge shaped . Who did that Pooh Nest ?
Are they slimy or squidgey ?

And it goes without saying , baby piglets do the cutest tiniest droppings Grin

I'm filling up with tears here. Happy ones of course. This is the best thread EVER. I haven't stopped smiling reading it all and the pictures have melted my heart. Used to have guinea pigs. Love them. Best pets ever. Congratulations to you and your piggies. 💐
Please can I be added to the list of godmothers too?!

😍

OP this must be one of the most feel good threads I’ve ever read on here, I can’t even work out what why?!

GP sound amazing pets, always liked them but didn’t realise they live so long or all the work involved in caring for them. You are such a committed pet owner

: ) Thanks for sharing the experience...

LittleMissSleepyUK · 19/02/2024 21:39

Have you admitted to yourself they are staying yet!!!

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 19/02/2024 21:44

Weigh ins this morning.... they seem to have lost a couple of grams, but from the quick glance I gave at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons resources this morning, this seems normal... a bit like human babies I guess. Think I'll weigh them daily just to make sure they're gaining weight.

Babies, Mom and Auntie are home alone today 😫 There should be some sort of pig maternity leave us owners can avail of 😅

Here's a few quick snaps I was able to take before rushing out the door, have a great day all you lovely ladies ❤️

Does Momma Pig breastfeed?

Apologies if I’m not using the pig appropriate term here, I’m very much pig ignorant 😀 they are so sweet though!

Yes, they have two nipples, one on each side low on their abdomens. In the books the photos are of the babies neatly putting their heads under Mama’s flank to get to the milk, but my giant singleton baby always went in from the front, under his mum’s chin - the poor girl would be sprawled over him with her front legs off the ground and her chin resting on his giant rump every time he wanted a feed, she was very patient with him!

Flowers4me · 20/02/2024 09:21

Just popped in for my guinea pig fix. Thanks for sharing the lovely photos, takes me back to my guinea pig days (we had four when my children were little - they were fabulous pets).

CoffeeWithCheese · 20/02/2024 09:45

They are utterly adorable! Meanwhile my four are just yelling abuse at me for rustling a packet (that contained crisps and not salad)! I'm bossed about by four stomachs on legs.

Soubriquet · 20/02/2024 09:47

The wheeking noise of GP’s do make me laugh. They are gannets and make so much noise over the little rustles and the fridge opening.

I can’t have them. Dh is allergic to hay in a way that sets off his asthma. Dd has asthma too and is allergic to horses like her dad so I wouldn’t trust her around hay either

shreknjumps · 20/02/2024 09:50

Shameless placemats

BertieBotts · 20/02/2024 09:52

In the sexing photos it looks to me like the lighter one is a sort of "O" shape whereas the two darker ones have a "V" shape.

Quick googling (v much not an expert!!) says that girls' genitals look Y-shaped and boys' shaped like an i, with the dot of the i being the penis and if you gently press just above, it should pop out and confirm suspicions.

So from that I would guess blodie is a boy and the other two are girls? I could be totally wrong here, though.

allabitmadtbf · 20/02/2024 09:54

I'm a dog person myself but totally addicted to this thread. They are the cutest wee bundles. I'd spend all day kissing them!

Blueink · 20/02/2024 10:07

Hope you are having a good day at work OP and not too distracted. Thanks for taking time to update before!
