Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

All the gang! Do you think we need to wait another while til we can tell what they are @JDJT? The pictures aren't great because they're a little wriggly! 😂

As you've had her 63 days now and gestian is 63-70 days she must've got pregnant just before you collected her .

Which means if there were any other females in with her (and the PigDad) then other Piggie Owners might be having similar surprises .

Pig Dad could be up for a lot of Pig Maintenence Wink

Congrats , this was such a lovely post . She is one lucky piggy having such an attentive carer. I used to have 4 pigs , Sami, Lily, Ruby and Valerie. I miss them every day . Such sweethearts x

PossumintheHouse · 18/02/2024 16:47

Absolutely no expert, but my thoughts would be:
Piggy 1) male
Piggy 2) male
Piggy 3) female

SoSo99 · 18/02/2024 16:48

OMG Congratulations! You're making we want to adopt some Guinea pigs...they are so adorable. And they're so lucky to have a home with somone so caring x

Tinysoxxx · 18/02/2024 16:49

Hopefully there are two males you can pair up and give to a friend then keep the female.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/02/2024 16:50

You don't need to sex them yet , but deffo before any boars get to 4 weeks -they can get a bit Oedipus and will eye up their mother (and Auntie Pig)

That's the only downside with male piggies .
Oh that and impaction.
And two males will mount each other (for dominence)

elliejjtiny · 18/02/2024 16:51

Aww, they are so cute. Love guinea pigs but I have to make do with the ones at the hospital because we have 2 cats who are hunters.

Tlolljs · 18/02/2024 16:52

I don’t anything about Guinea pigs but I didn’t expect them to be that big! Or so advanced.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/02/2024 16:52

😘😘😘😘😘😘. Oh my heart has just liquified. Congratulations Mummy Piggy, and indeed Congratulations to you on your Grand piggies.

Sarvanga38 · 18/02/2024 16:53

Pale one male, other two female.

InAPickle12345 · 18/02/2024 16:54

They’re amazing! 😍

I’d have said they were all girls though, but maybe I’m looking at the wrong bit! Im not up on my GP anatomy! 😂

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 18/02/2024 16:56

Same thing has happened to me twice! First time we bought 2 female guineas, one turned out to be male. Second time bought 2 young females, one turned out to be already pregnant,I didn’t even know she was until I saw the (only) one youngster in the cage one morning - which was a total shock.

They do give birth very easily, but it can be problematic sexing them and separating them accordingly before further unwanted pregnancies arise.

Neither am I! I think if we can't tell from these pics I'll just leave it til their 14 days or so and we can try again ☺️

The pictures aren't easy to tell. I'm thinking boy, girl, boy, but too blurry to be sure! Yes, maybe more pics in a week or so. I know it must be hard to get a sharp image with them wriggling, and to get it to focus close up!

NalafromtheLionKing · 18/02/2024 16:58

Congratulations, they are so cute!

I had the same question as a PP about the older girl. We bought Guinea pig “sisters” from a pet shop (quite a few years ago now, but still) and the one who turned out to be a boy kept nipping the girl one.

Yes, I think I'll have to wait until I have DS with me and at least I'll have two hands to try and manoeuvre them and keep them steady 👍

I have just found this thread today and it has made my day! X

Tygertiger · 18/02/2024 17:06

As I recall, once my baby boar was about 3 weeks old he was easy to sex as a bit of gentle pressure on his abdomen and his penis popped out fairly unmistakably. So I think you’ll definitely be able to sex them in another couple of weeks.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 18/02/2024 17:06

They are all gorgeous! Congratulations!

Love piggies, we had lots when the kids were younger (Mabel piggie was 9 when she died)! Unfortunately the kids are no longer kids (the youngest is 27 lol), but we’re planning more piggies when we have grandchildren! The squeaks! The popcorning! The purrs & snuggles! Fabulous animals!

Although we’ll have to have a better pub this time; red kites have been reintroduced (and breeding wonderfully). Overheard in local park, a little girl of about 8 & her Mum;

Child: What’s that big bird?
Mum: It’s a red kite! Do you remember when your Guinea pig ran away?
Child: Yes?
Mum: It didn’t run away to the circus, one of those buggers ate it.

If you listen carefully, you can still hear her sobbing.

Having animals is a good way of children learning about life and death, but blimey, I don’t think that was peak parenting that day!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 18/02/2024 17:13

Wish i could lose weight that fast!

BirthdayRainbow · 18/02/2024 17:16

Two of my late piggies names have been mentioned as potential names for these babies. I feel ridiculously proud.

foxychox · 18/02/2024 17:16

Awwww, congratulations! Beautiful piggies!!
